My boyfriend and I stayed at the Riu Palace from 12/15-12/22/05. We are in our mid-30's and wanted to relax. We definitely did that while we were there.
Our Room:
We had Junior Suite 4049 on the quiet side of the hotel. Our room was very clean. I noticed no mold and we didn't see any bugs in our room. The sofa in the room is kinda cheap and is showing some wear. The view out of the room was great (see pictures). This room is on the top floor and we heard no noise from other guest rooms. The room was cleaned well each day and there were plenty of towels. We tipped a couple of dollars each day. One day we were low on Corona in the mini bar - we left a note saying "Mas Cerveza - Por Favor" and they filled our fridge with Corona. We were happy about that. We really enjoyed the balcony and often found myself dozing off at night there - since the beds are as hard as everyone says. The bathroom was well equipped. The shower was a typical European shower where you can remove the showerhead - the pressure was great. The shower had a large bottle of shampoo/bath gel in it. Other items provided were bars of soap, lotion, conditioner, wash cloths, shower cap, and a sewing kit. The hair dryer was a Conair 1600 watt dryer - worked great for my thick curly hair. We did brush our teeth with bottled water since there was a sticker on the mirror that said "Non-potable."
The Food:
This is where my biggest issue lies with this hotel. There is such great potential and well they really fall flat here. Now I wasn't expecting gourmet meals all the time - but some variety would have been nice. Seven days of the same food gets pretty tiresome. In the buffet - you couldn't tell "Italian Night" from "Mexican Night" that is a problem. I didn't get sick from the food - just bored of it. It was usually decent just no variety. We did eat at the Gourmet, Steak House, and Mexican specialty restaurants. The Gourmet was the best meal of the trip at the hotel. The Mexican and the Steak House were just slightly better than the buffet.
The Drinks:
Ok - they do very well here. The servers and bar tenders are very friendly and the more they get to know you, the less chance you have of finding an empty glass when you look at your place at the bar. Pool service can be spotty - we figured out a couple dollar tip on the first drink of the day helped service to be more consistent. I didn't think the drinks were weak at all.
Hotel Grounds, Beach, etc.:
The hotel has beautiful pools and grounds. I did notice that the water in the pool on the "active" side of the complex was very cloudy compared to the water in the pool on the "quiet" side of the complex. All those kids, I guess - plus more people with sunscreen coming off in the pool. The beach was clean and the beach vendors left you alone once you told them "no." The shows at night are fun - no one from this crowd is headed to Broadway anytime soon, but it will keep you amused. The disco at night opens at 11 p.m. was very fun - the best bartenders worked there.
Overall:
I will probably not stay at an all-inclusive resort in the near future - I will try something different.
