We stayed at the Riu Nov/2005. My husband and I went another couple. I'll start with the positives of the Riu. When we first arrived we had about 4 people greet us which was impressive. The hotel is beautiful and the decor was brilliant. We arrived at 11:30 AM and were immediately taken to our rooms which were right next to each other. Overall, the service was great. Here are the negatives. We were delivered someone else's bag and not given one of our own. But, they did correct that immediately. The valet gave our car to someone else. The girls were leaving and when they got in the car realized that they had rented an automatic not a stick shift. We walked up while this was happening. The pool was a bit dirty. The vendors are constantly hounding you on the beach. No beach service. Food was not that great. Japanese was the best though. There are 4 "restaurants" and the buffet. We ate at 3 out of the 4. The steakhouse is not worth it. We had a 9:00 reservation. The food was overcooked and they kind of rush you out of there. My girlfriend wanted to have some of the fruit and marshmallows from the chocolate fountain. There were no strawberries and marshmallows left. She asked for some more and the server told her that they were closing. We were just getting to dessert. Believe me we were not lingering. No reason too. Also, we observed the workers eating off the buffet while still on the clock.I think it is great that they feed their employees but wait to the patrons are gone. Next night we ate at the Mexican restaurant. Food was better. Nothing impressive. We observed a couple that had arrived a little late for there reservation. The host was not going to let them sit down for dinner. There was about 15 tables open. She complained about all the open tables and he let them in. The third night we ate at the Japenese restaurant. The food was pretty good (atleast for the Riu). They did lock us in though. I am assuming so that people passing by would not just walk in w/out a reservation since there were again open tables. The last night we cancelled out reservations at the "gourmet" restaurant. We wanted to have a good meal for our last night. The rooms were quite worn for only being open for 11 months. Stains on the sofa and dirty rugs. The showers can be quite dangerous for short or older people. Not everything is all-inclusive. You have to pay to play pool. You can not have a Riu umbrella on the beach. You have to pay a vendor for their umbrella. The pool closes at 7:00pm. Only one bar stays open till 2:00 am and it is the disco Pacha. The others close at midnight. Yes, they will kick you out. The drinks are very weak. They have expresso machines. In the morning there is fresh ice in the buckets to keep the milk cold. Not once during our 4 days there did they ever refresh the ice. So, of course a few hours later the ice is melted the milk is used up and people are still making coffee drinks with the machine which is using milky water from the bucket because the container with the milk is empty and has tipped over. One employee said "what do you expect this is Mexico" I would not recommend the Riu to anyone. Horrible for honeymooners and romantic getaways. The Riu does not live up to their own standards. Everything is very inconsistent. It looks like a 4 star hotel but only lives up to a 1 star. Hope this helps.
