My husband and I were originally booked to go to Cancun for our honeymoon. Four days before the wedding Hurricane Wilma hit so we re-scheduled to Cabo San Lucas and the Riu Palace. I read every review on Trip Advisor and I have to say that I was a little scared that we would have a bad trip.
Please see below an honest opinion of this hotel (please be aware that though I am fairly well traveled I have not been to too many resorts and I had never been to Mexico)
1. Upon arrival someone at the front desk told us everywhere we could eat and drink for the whole week and a bellboy was there to take our bags to our room.
2. The room was of adequate size and though the bed was hard it was huge (king size).
3. We booked ocean view (not ocean front) and we could see the ocean from our room so we did not change rooms -- we did not want to deal with that hassle.
4. The buffets are delicious.
--I personally preffered the buffet over the reservation dinners because every time we made a reservation for dinner it was at 9 PM. I was always falling asleep in my chair after drinking all day. The Mexican restaurant and the Steakhouse were both good but I definitely prefered being able to eat as soon as I got to the restaurant.
--The best dinner I had was the "Chef's specialty" at the place that has dinner buffet. We had leg of lamb and a chocolate fountain!!!
--The room service was also great. They only have it for breakfast at this particular hotel. We ordered twice. You can find the room service slips in the dresser of each room. There is a menu listed. This menu does not have very many choices but we figured out that if you write what you want on the card (there is a little comment section) you can get it. We had champagne, quesadillas, scrambled eggs and bacon!!
5. I can't say enough about the swim up bar. My husband and I had our own special place every day and we were there from open to close. There are two pools with two swim up bars (one activity one lounge). If you like people who drink a lot but are relaxed and not crazy drunk I would suggest the lounge poole (BAJA NORTE). Another great thing about Baja Norte was Alex -- the bar tender. He made sure we had drinks in our hands at all times. He was extremely friendly!
6. I read a bunch of review about a fishy smell in the hotel. A few nights we were there the ocean was a little smelly but as long as we kept our door shut it kept the smell out.
7. Our housekeeping was great in our room -- they usually came by each evening to make sure we had towels -- if you went to this resort and did not get good service I just have to ask -- did you tip???
8. The minifridge was stocked every two days with beer, sodas and water. There was also an awesome liquer dispenser in the room that we used all the time!!
9. If you are going to do an excursion I would suggest snorkling with the "Sunrider" company. We had an awesome time cruising around and then snorkling. After all that we had a Mexican buffet lunch and cruized home...it was awesome! The staff was very friendly.
10. Another thing about excursions -- If you want to parasail and you book it through the hotel -- be aware that no matter what they say, the maximum tandum weight for the parasailing is 300 pounds. My husband and I paid for a tandum ride and when we got out there we had to go separately.
All in all, we had a great time at this resort. I couldn't have asked for more!!
I would definitely suggest this resort to anyone!!
