My husband and I stayed at the RIU between October 22, 2005 and October 29, 2005. We found the hotel, staff and overall vacation to be excellent. The hotel is extremely clean, the staff goes out of their way to make you comfortable and the atmosphere is very relaxing. After reading the reviews on the internet, I was worried that our travel agent had made an error in recommending this facility. But after spending a week there, I have decided the people who gave it bad reviews were evidently looking for a different type of vacation. The RIU is an all inclusive resort. You are in Mexico. So given those two scenerios, you have to be aware of what type of vacation you are going to have.
The room was very nice - extremely clean and we had nightly turn down service with chocolates on our pillows each night. They brought fresh towels twice a day so that you would always have plenty of towels. The refrigerator was stocked constantly and if you wanted more than what they had left in the fridge, a simple phone call brought someone immediately to give you whatever you wanted. The people were more than accomodating. We had a room with an ocean view that was spectacular. The balcony was a wonderful place to sit and relax, drinking morning coffee or a nightcap. It was a gorgeous view.
The pools were wonderful. Very clean and there were people constantly cleaning to be sure wherever you walked was clean. The pool water was VERY refreshing - afterall, the temperature was in the high 90's and the pool water felt wonderful. There were always plenty of chairs to sit in and the waiters were extremely prompt about coming around and bringing drinks. Even if they were busy and we went to the pool bar ourselves to get drinks, the waiters would still get to everyone and were always very friendly and very nice. We did tip them occassionally - it was extremely hot out there and they work LONG hours.
The breakfast buffet was wonderful. If someone couldn't find something to eat there, they are completely spoiled. They had everything imaginable to offer and here again, the service was very good.
Lunch buffet was okay. There were plenty of selections there too. If you didn't want chicken, seafood, steak or pork, they had pizza, hamburgers, cheesburgers and hot dogs every day, along with french fries. There was always plenty of fresh fruit and salads too, as well as the best bread. Ice cream was available for those wanting a cool treat too.
The supper buffet was okay too. We ate there 4 nights and certainly didn't come away hungry. It is a buffet afterall so you aren't going to get the same type of food that you get in a special order restaurant. We ate 1 night in the steak restaurant and it was good. The ribeye was very thin,(the same steak they have on the buffet every day) however I had the beef tenderloin and it was excellent. We didn't eat in the other restaurants so can't tell you if there were good or not. When we go back, and we will go back, we decided we would take the time to make reservations in the gourmet and the mexican restaurants as well as the steak restaurant.
We went off premises for supper a couple of nights. We took a taxi, which was $7 one way and went to a restaurant called Peurto Vieja. It was excellent. Porterhouse steak which was 28 oz, appetizer and desert for $30. Fabulous meal. They had authentic mexican food there for as little as $9 for the entree. We would definitely go there again. We also ate one night in Cabo as we had gone in to do some sight seeing. We ate at Lorenzillos. Extremely pricey and not that good for the price. 4 of us ate dinner and 1 drink each and the bill was $270 US. Definitely not worth the money.
The smell that everyone complains about I believe comes from the cruise ships. We only smelled it a couple of times and both times there were cruise ships in port. It smells like diesel fuel from their engines. We never smelled it at night and didn't smell it at all when there were no cruise ships in port. Since the cruise ships park right out front of this hotel, I believe the smell is coming from them.
We took the glass bottom boat over to the arch and that was definitely worth the $12 roundtrip. The fish there were spectacular and it was wonderful to get to see the arch up close.
My husband and brother-in-law went deep sea fishing two days there with a service in town and had a wonderful time. They caught tuna one day and marlin and dolphin the other day. That was definitely worth it for them.
The hotel fixed them a lunch to take with them, even though they left at 5:45 AM. As I said, they try and go above and beyond what is necessary to be of assistance to their guests.
The only complaint I have about the hotel is trying to use the calling card. I had purchased a prepaid calling card and the hotel has to connect you with the AT&T operator. They charge you $3 each time to connect you and unfortunately, in all of my attempts to use the card (7) I was only connected 1 time with the correct operator. That has to be the only problem I can tell you I experienced there. My bill when we checked out was $10 for telephone calls - I had actually only been charged with 1 completed call. When we go again, I will have my cell phone activated to that I can call internationally.
Don't be mis-lead by the other reviews. The RIU is a beautiful facility. You have to keep in mind you are in Mexico and the trip from the airport to the hotel can look a little rough in some areas. But once you get to the hotel, it is absolutely beautiful. I can't wait to go back. Next time I believe we will check out San Jose, as it appears to be less the party town than Cabo.
