My husband and I (31 and 27) celebrated our five year wedding anniversary at the Riu Palace from 9/3 - 9/10. Our arrival and departure from the airport was quick and easy. Our transfers were through American Express, they were very professional and accommodating. Again, be really careful of the timeshare people, as you know from reading the other reviews. Some guy actually followed us around claiming he was American Express there to pick us up, luckily, I knew from trip advisor not to fall for these traps. Moving on, they picked us up in a town car and provided us with bottled water for the drive. There was one other couple that joined us for the ride. Upon arrival we were given a glass of wine and then the whole rundown about the dinner reservations, pool towels, map etc. etc. The gentleman that was checking us in asked us if we wanted a safe key and of course we got one. Once I looked at our room number, I knew it was on a lower lever (100?) not an upper level ocean front room as I requested from Carlos by email a week prior. (Carlos did respond back saying that he would try his best to accommodate our requests.) I then asked the gentleman at the desk if we could change our room to an upper level, he said he would check, although, he did say that our initial room was ocean view I wanted to be up higher. He came back and said he did have a room available on the third level with a great view on the activity pool side 3136. We gladly accepted and I handed him a $10 bill for his extra effort. He was very appreciative.
Room: We were very impressed. The resort itself is really beautiful and our view was spectacular. I noticed later that we had a smoking room on a smoking floor but the smoke was not noticeable at all. Our fridge is stocked with 6 coronas, pepsi, 7up, orange and diet. Along with 2 mega bottles of water and 4 regular sized waters. The bottle water does have a weird taste and my husband really didn't like it, oh well, it's not Poland spring but it was okay. There is also 4 liquor dispensers in the room, we used it once. I left $2 everyday for the mini bar attendant and he took it everyday and stocked our fridge. At first he was pretty good but then it was kind of annoying that we did not drink pepsi or 7 up at all but he kept putting it in there. I wrote a note for please more diet and water (with the empty bottles) and still we got alot more pepsi and 7 up. We left $3 a day for the maid who in the beginning was fantastic. We got turn down service twice and one little towel arrangement. Then it was downhill she just got by with making our bed kind of thing. Not a big deal but it does feel good to come back to a clean room especially bathroom. Make sure you leave your do not disturb out if you like to sleep they start early. As far as theft, we kept everything in our safe. As far as a rock hard mattress, this is very true, we woke up with sore backs pretty much everyday. The shower is extremely slippery, take caution. The TV is mostly Spanish channels, except 54 I think was ESPN and 2 was CBS. Our room was always cool just keep your patio door closed it is on a sensor. The all marble floors are beautiful but they are extremely loud from everyone from clangs, push carts and footsteps, you get used to it but it is noticeable. One woman came out of her room one day at 8:30 am with a towel wrapped around her, I guess they were fixing something and were banging that early in the morning, she came out on a rampage and they stopped. The resort is well maintained, the staff is always cleaning, fixing or doing something.
Food: We made our dinner reservations immediately and were lucky enough to get one at the Japanese and Steakhouse during our stay (go around 1 to 2 p.m. no line). The next day we went back and got a reservation at the Mexican, b/c other guests said it was good. The Japanese rest. was pretty good, they try to make it as authentic as possible, If you like sushi, it is the closest you will get at the Riu. We ordered a couple of dinners to have variety. The fried ice cream is really great there!!! The steakhouse, despite the negative reviews other people made at the hotel, was not that bad. I ordered the tenderloin cooked medium and that is exactly how it came out. The apps. are buffet style and the dinners come with corn on the cob, baked potato and spinach. My husband ordered the porkloin, a bad choice, dry and very small. The Mexican rest. was our last night's dinner, apps. again are buffet style. I then ordered the shrimp which was delicious and my husband got the chicken which he claimed to be very good. Order a Mexican coffee there. They put on a little show for it. The breakfast buffet was excellent, anything that you want for breakfast they have, I loved it. There was pretty much no table service (very busy not enough waiters) inside but it was better if you sat outside. We went to the dinner buffet twice, Saturday night, which is Mexican night, extremely good, the tacos are out of this world, cooked on the spot. The next night was International, not the greatest, they had prime rib and turkey. A lot of guests were a little disappointed that night, especially after the great food at Mexican night. One thing that was disturbing was there was never any chocolate cake when I wanted it. I asked a couple of times but they told me to check back they will probably have some tomorrow. :-( You really need to look for a server if you want anything in the dining room, otherwise, just get it yourself, like your drinks. That is probably one of the things I have to say that doesn't make the Riu a 5 star resort, the poor quality of service in some areas. The lunch buffet, I am sorry to say, some days wasn't the best at all. Everything is fried besides the salad bar and that on a couple of days was full of flies. I was very disappointed. We then went to the Italian lunch buffet and found that it was full of flies also. Maybe just bad days but overall, disappointing. After that we decided to try and have some lunches in town. Oh yes, if you are hungry after midnight, the only food available is in the lobby bar. They have ham and cheese sandwiches, not the greatest. We came up with a plan after the second night, since we would be out late and hungry. We would get some pizza, which is always available at the buffets and save it in our fridge, hey cold pizza was better than those sandwiches. another note: We had the opportunity to go to some really great restaurants in town: Margaritavilla (the biggest margaritas $9 but big enough to share) ($40couple), the office excellent lobster tacos (make a day of it and go down for lunch then you can use Medano beach for the day) and Pancho's (great mexican food very authentic steak fajitas and great tequila).
Alcohol: Plentiful and you never go without. If you want more alcohol, ask for your drinks as a double, it works every time. We tipped the bartender at the pool, Marco every other day and he remembered us. The red wine is not good at all and the white is bearable with dinner. Ask for the best quality liquor otherwise you get whatever is available. Ask for a bottle of wine or champagne for your room, if you like!
Beach/Pools/Activities: The beach at the Riu was definitely not swimmable during our stay. A lot of people actually got injured as a result of swimming in the water. Please don't try it if you are not a strong swimmer. Same goes with the water activities. We did the glass bottom boat to Lover's Beach and I got pretty banged up getting in and out of the boat, there are no docks. It is a run and a leap. Use caution with that. We stayed at lover's beach for an hour and got some great photos. We did the waverunners at medano beach the day we ate at the office and paid $40 for 40 minutes. Use the company down near baja cantina, you can bargain. We also had booked a booze cruise through Carlos at the Riu. It was the Jungle booze cruise, he said it was wild, but I think that was an understatement. Once we got to dock and saw what the vessel looked like, we headed straight to the the ticket counter and traded ours in for a more relaxing ride, one you can actually sit down on. We took the Pez Gato, ($35 p/p) there was about 25 people on with us and it was very relaxing. Some people were really taking advantage of the free drinks. We passed the Jungle booze cruise on the way home and one of the women flashed us, whew, thank god we were not on that boat. Good for the young or young at heart with a wildside. There are some fun daily activities offered at activity pool at the Riu. Check out the agenda for the day. My husband liked the poker tournaments. The gym is small and dated. If you are a runner, you may have trouble finding a treadmill that works there was only one. Running on the beach is very difficult also, very hot. We used the tennis courts twice, very hot in the middle of sun and kind of in a weird place. We did get a couples massage at the spa. We had it on the patio area at about 10 a.m. it was well worth the $70 p/p. Remember: If you do not want to do anything at all and just hang out read a book or enjoy the pool, the Riu has plenty of space for that too. The relaxing pool is an ideal place for that. You will notice that both pools are alot cooler and cleaner than the swim up pools for obvious reasons.
Entertainment: Entertainment is not the best at the hotel. Every evening there is a show with singing and dancing kind of stuff (one night was grease). They also had a Karoke night, which was pretty entertaining. The Disco is laughable, if you have nothing else to do, go otherwise the Lobby Bar later in the evening was pretty fun, alot of people were usually hanging there before they headed off. This was a good place to find people that needed a cab into town. If you split it with another couple $5 per couple. Do not pay more than $10 to town. Some cab companies try to rip you off a couple of bucks. We went into town our first night there. We went to Cabo Wabo. We were very lucky Sammy Haggar was there and he performed. Dave Haselhoff was there also and he even sang a song. During the week, we also checked out El Squid Roe (springbreak), The Giggling Marlin (Turned into springbreak), The Nowhere Bar (Tuesday it was Ladies Night, women drink for free, very good music). We also got to watch opening night football at the Corner Cafe, cheap beer and the phones and internet access are really cheap!! Riu charges $4 for 20 min. internet access. The Cafe charged $1 for 15 min. and phone service was .35 per minute. Remember most places in town do not have A/C, hot and in some cases uncomfortable.
In closing, I loved our trip, I wish we were still there. Besides very little disappointments, the Riu is a great place and so is Cabo San Lucas. If you want to have fun, relax and enjoy yourself the Riu is for you. If you want to be waited on hand and foot and be treated like Kings on vacation, you may be a little disappointed. Overall, I would highly recommend the Riu. Enjoy yourself!
My main reason for writing this review is because Trip Advisor was so helpful with our trip.
