My fiancée and I returned from the RIU. We travel extensively, and this was one of the best vacations we have ever had.
Facilities
As everyone else has mentioned, the resort was beautiful. Pools are great. The grounds are great. We visited some other resorts while in Cabo and nothing we saw even came close. This place is amazing. It is huge though, so be forewarned.
Rooms
We had booked a Jacuzzi suite and it was phenomenal. We had one of the best views because our room was a corner room with a huge balcony. The room had a beautiful bathroom with a great shower, bidet. The Jacuzzi was in the room between the bedroom and the bathroom. The bed was a little hard like other reviews have noted, but wasn’t so bad that we couldn’t sleep. The TV had a wide range of channels, including many US channels. The mini bar was nice, but the only thing we really used it for was Coronas and water.
Food/Drinks
The food was interesting. I can certainly see how some people could be disappointed, because there is a lack of consistency. We ate at the steak restaurant one night, and it was amazing. However, the next night we ate at the Mexican restaurant for dinner, and it was terrible. The next night was at the Asian restaurant, and it was very, very good. The breakfast buffet was very good. Lunch and dinner at the buffets was ok, but not great. I ate more chips, guacamole, and pizza than I care to remember.
The drinks were good. After awhile you figure out how to order them. Always specify a good quality liquor, and don’t be afraid to ask for them un pocquito fuerte (a little stronger).
Staff
The staff was consistently friendly. Our room attendant was very nice and kept everything stocked and cleaned. The bellmen were also very nice and helpful. To those reviewers who complained about the staff’s inability to speak English, I suggest you go to San Diego instead, it is Mexico after all. With that being said, just about everyone spoke some English, but it was fun working on my terrible Spanish.
Service
Despite the consistent friendliness of the staff, service quality was not consistent. There were times where it was impossible to find a waitress to bring drinks. At other times there seemed to be way too many waitresses, asking if you needed anything every 20 seconds.
Airport Transfers
We used transcabo, and they were great. I can’t see any reason to spend the $150 for private transfers. We used the shuttle service for $32/pp. They picked us up right away, and shipped us (and one other couple) to the RIU. On the way back, they were on time again. They use very nice vehicles, and the drivers were very safe and friendly.
Activities
We booked an ATV tour with Jared in the lobby of the RIU. It was through Amigos/Baja ATVs. The tour was good but not great. I’ve ridden before and was disappointed with the ride itself. However, the tour goes to a private beach where they let you ride on your own for 45 minutes or so, and it was beautiful. The tour was $55/pp, but you can talk them down $5 or $10 because of how competitive the tour operators are.
We also booked a waverunner for 30 minutes. This should not be missed. I think it’s the best way to go out to the arch, the seals, and what I believe is lover’s beach. It was only $45 or so, certainly worth it.
We also booked a moonlight massage at the Spa. We had ours done on the beach, very romantic. There were a few other people on the beach, but they did not distract us.
Entertainment
I always felt like there was something to do. During the day, pool volleyball was great. It became increasingly difficult to keep score with each Corona that passed - The score always seemed to be Six-Six. At night we would have dinner, and then there was usually some type of show to watch. After the show, we would head into the disco. The disco reminded me of discos on some of the cruises I’ve been on. There are a lot of ‘over-served’ people of all ages making fools of themselves on the dance floor. At first you just sit on the edge and people-watch, after a few rounds of liquid confidence you find yourself joining them. Fun, fun, fun! The disco usually closes at around 2-3 depending on how long the crowd wanted to go. And of course, you can always head into Cabo if you want more…
Overall
We both agree that this was one of the most enjoyable vacations we have taken. The RIU is a great place to stay. It’s not perfect, but at ~ $200/day per couple, it’s a great value when you account for everything that you get. If it were twice the price, I would still rate it above average. At this price, I have to rate it an excellent. I am recommending it to all of my friends. Hope this helps!
