“Beautiful Resort....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2005

My husband and I and our 19 month daughter spent our vacation at the Riu from Feb 25-March 5th. We were very impressed with the hotel grounds. This place is beautiful!! The staff were always friendly and happy to help with whatever you may need. The bar staff is always working hard to mix up your favourite drinks. The food at the buffets was great, there was so many choices that you could not go wrong. We went to 2 of the four a la carte restaurants, although we had to wait in line for about 45 mins to get a reservation.
The junior suites were spacious and were clean. Our mini bar was replenished every day with Corona beers, pop, and botttled water. And if you needed more all you had to do was call the front desk and they would come to refill. We had a great view of the pool area.
The beach was nice but beware of the strong undertoes of the ocean..disappointed that the beach wasn't swimmable although you could take a dip on the calmer days. There were vendors on the beach but if you were not interseted in buying anything they pretty much left you alone.
A cab ride to Cabo San Lucas is about a 10 minute drive and I'll cost you $10 US. We had dinner at Amarone Italian Restaurant. The food was amazing and the atmoshere was beautiful. Highly recommeded place to have a nice quite romantic dinner. Later you can check out the Marina and go bar hopping to Squid Roe or Cabo Wabo Cantina. We felt were safe walking the streets even with our 19 month daughter.
Over all the Riu was a nice place and we enjoyed ourselves were much with no complaints...hey we're on vacation:o)

Stayed at the newly opened RIU Palace in Cabo San Lucas Mexico recently and felt importat to warn all about the hotel and service at this all inclusive resort. The hotel is beautiful with pool and clean new rooms --but ther food and drink are horrific. Majority of our group of 200 people got food poisoning --all had diarrhea --and it was from the hotel not the surrounding Mexico food and drink. The water they wash the food in or ice the drinks with is tainted I suspect but could be the preparation itself. The restaurants or terrible service and food alike --and you have to get up at 8:30am to stand in an hour long line to make your reservation to be at any of those limited restaurants for that evening --and if room runs out when you get to the front of the line ---its the general restaurant for you! You cannot prebook for later in the week --it's a morning ritual to all stand in line and hope you get a table. We all later found the food and service wasnt worth the wait --and even though had paid for all inclusive spent most of the week going downtown to eat and paying there . The drinks were all WATERED DOWN --all you got from sipping them was bloated ! No alcohol in any of them. Even the keg beer was watered --Again had to travel down town for any quality of drinks. The check in process was also
horrible --our luggage had to sit in the hotel lobby ALL DAY while they tried to process our large group and "make keys" for 200 people --no where to store the luggage safely so you only had to pray nothing was taken from it. Our rooms were finally available at 4:40pm after arriving early that day with no where to store even valuables. Hard to swim holding your wallet.
But check out -they were knocking at the door at 11:01am to toss you out.
The beach --you cannot swim there -the current is ALWAYS too strong so
if you want to swim its the pool or a mile hike up toward town.

Cabo is a great place , downtown is wonderful. Nightlife is great --but you
have to take the expensive taxi's or public buses which after nighttime are a bit scarey. The RIU is a LONG walk up the beach to town --and is dirty
dusty trip walking if you take inland route. You can water taxi but will fall
onto the beach or into the water when they let you off --many people were
minorly injured doing this because the current near the hotel is so strong.

My advice if going to CABO is to pick another hotel. Stay away from the RIU. I travel all the time --this was my worst trip ever!!

My wife and I were spent a week at the Riu Feb. 19- 26. It was a very nice place. We had no problems with room, service, weather or the like, but.
I got a nasty case of diarrhea on Feb 22nd. that I still to this day (3-04) have and have been to the doctors here at home 3x including a trip to the emergency room on our first day back. The diarrhea got very blood at that point. They are at present running tests to see if I picked up a case of E coli. Be aware that we only ate and drank at the Riu. We never drank the water from the taps. The only thing we can come up with that I ate and my wife didn't (she is fine, was the whole time there) is a hamburger that i got from the poolside restraunt for lunch on Sunday.
So other than a case of bloody diarrhea it was a fine place to spend a vacation.

Wow. Couldn't find ANY problems with this resort at all! Had an amazing time... Room was great, didn't have a bad meal, staff was super-friendly, great location ($10 taxi or 30-40 minute walk along the beach into town).

Just be prepared that this place is HUGE & the beach isn't a nice, warm, calm, powdery sand swimming beach...

Whale watching was amazing, catamaran/snorkling tour was fantastic. Cabo itself is a blast - lots of cool bars/restaurants/shops...

Would go again in an instant!!!

My husband and I just spent a wonderful week at the Riu, 2/22-3/01.
This was our first trip to Los Cabos, but we have been to every major resort area in Mexico and always stay at 5 star hotels. We were not disappointed with the Riu.
My husband called the hotel a few days before we left to request ocean view on a high floor. He was assured that they would take care of that for us.
They certainly came through, as we were given a Jr. Suite on the third floor, which is the highest floor and were given full ocean view over looking the swim-up bar. This room was not set back from the ocean as other rooms are. We came prepared to give our reservation friend a little gift for honoring our request.
This hotel is huge, but you never get the feeling that it is over-crowded. There are plenty of chairs for everyone whether you are at the pool or watching the nitely show.
The entertainment and live bands were the best we have seen compared to other 5 star hotels in Mexico that we have stayed at.
We found the staff to be very accomodating and friendly. We always tipped our bartender $1.00 for our duration at the bar. Waiters were given a $2-3 dollar tip and the maid $2.00 a day. We forgot to tip our room beverage caretaker and twice went to our room at 4:00pm to find that our room had not been made up and $1.00 was missing from the bed. Since we never saw our maid we are not sure if she actually got the $2.00 a day we left for her. We went to the desk and told them we wanted our room made up earlier in the day and it was taken care of the following day.
The specialty restaurant reservation system needs to be changed. We waited 1 1/2 hrs. to book the gourmet restaurant and were in the second row. We were told the early sitting was sold out and we had the last reservation for the 9.00 late sitting. We found 4 empty tables at that sitting and only recognized 2 people that waited in line with us. It appeared to us that people were tipping someone to get a reservation and avoid waiting in line. We talked to people that didn't wait in line but no one would fess up as to how they did it.
The food in all the restaurants was good, not exceptional. They even had lobster in the buffet one night (sorry we missed it.) We tipped the waiters as soon as we sat down and never had to wait for a drink, as the whole bottle of wine was left on our table.
Taxi service is expensive for 2 people, $10.00 one way to town. The taxi drivers were having a dispute with the tour operators and would not let them pick us up at the hotel. We were told that we had to walk down to the street, which is no short distance. Thankfully, the tour operator came up with a plan and did pick us up in front of the hotel, just not in a tour bus.
All in all, we would rate this hotel an 8 out of 10 only because it is still new and has flaws that need to be worked out. Where else can you go and find 5 bottles of top shelve booze in a dispenser in your room.

P.S. A word for all of the non-tippers. Remember, this is Mexico and the service people are not paid what you may think. If you wish to stay at an all-inclusive and not tip, go to Breezes in Curacao, where tipping is absolutely forbidden (they could actually get fired.) They have the best selection of International drinks that I have ever seen. B&B and Grand Marnier lovers take heed.

We had a small group of people that stayed at the RIU Feb. 19-26th. The grounds were perfect, the weather was great and the service was perfect. We left a tip each day in the room and had the mini-bar restocked daily. The service in some of the reservation resturants wasn't what you'd call super speedy but we're on vacation and we'd prefer that to being rushed through at warp speed.
We spent most of the time by the beach which was lovely, nice sand though somewhat corse but you could walk barefoot without any issues. We did swim in the ocean off the beach, there's some strong wave action which made body surfing fun.
The room was really nice, we had a great view of the ocean and pool. The beds are a bit firm but again nothing to complain about.
Overall it was a great vacation at a wonderful resort.

My family of 6 just returned from the RUI Palace and I must say, having traveled extensively all over Mexico, that this was up there with the worst experiences.

The hotel grounds are indeed lovely; the service was substandard. I do not go on vacation to wake up at 7:00 am to wait in line to get resturant reservations.

We all thought the food was horrible, it was like a Carnival Cruise line..all you can eat but horrid.

The rooms were small, we got the"Jacuzzi suite" TOTAL waste, do not do it!

I have never, ever stayed at a hotel where you cannot charge things to your room - ever. They would not even take our Amex upon arrival. You will need cash and be sure to bring it..because they do not have an ATM on or by the property.

The staff was friendly, they do expect tips though and you will get better service if you tip them a few dollars.

The drinks were gross in general.

We did go to town and eat one night at Mi Casa, and I highly recommend that. We also did the ATV tour and it was a big hit - Cabo is a delightful quaint city that was discolored by the flashiness of the hotel as well as the horrid food! I would only recommend this property to the indivdual that loves cruising but is looking to stay on land.

The closest one is at the Costco and it will cost you 6.00 to get there.
