My husband and I are seniors and have travelled extensively to 5-star resorts. We just spent a wonderful week, Jan. 26-Feb. 2 at the Riu and it is definitely 5-star. No complaints about anything. You can read all about the hotel and Cabo and what to do there from other reviews. I will touch on topics of concern that have come up from previous reviews since the hotel opened. I read them all before I went.
Check-in: we were banded at the bus, given papers to fill out on the ride to the hotel. When we arrived, we went to the Lobby Bar where we were handed our room number, key, towel tickets, safety box key.
That took 5 minutes.
The first thing in the room I checked was the bed. It was a true king size mattress, padded top, sitting on a box spring (no concrete). No different from my bed at home. I would not call it hard.
Bees: I counted 3 sightings all week. Forget about them.
Pools: Wonderfully heated - you don't want to get out.
Gym: When I was there they were building an addition to double its size.
Stairs: Yes, lots of them, but you don't have to walk any stairs if you don't want to. There are elevators or ramps to take you anywhere. When I didn't feel like climbing stairs to the Lobby Bar I just walked around the corner and took an elevator.
Staff: Always friendly, smiling, answered my olas, tried to be helpful. They don't speak much English but I always made myself understood with what little Spanish I know. I travel with a Spanish phrase book which helps. It always brought a smile (or laugh) when I used a few Spanish words.
Service: Most days it was excellent. Dishes were cleared before you went up for seconds. On big check-in days when everyone flocked to the beach buffet at once things were not cleared quickly, or the waiter didn't come to take your drink order. Not so terrible. You can get up and get your own drink. Lying at the pool, we were asked countless times if we wanted a drink.
Dishes: They never ran out and were always clean.
White Minibus: It stops outside the front gate of the hotel. It's really to take staff to and from Riu and town (Cabo). It runs often (20 min?) and costs 6 pesos (60 cents). It sure beats $10 for a taxi. We did it both ways. Ask to be dropped off at the Puerto Pariso Mall (that's where the driver turns off the main street). Coming home you pick it up just past the Paraiso Mall on the main street. The minibus has RIU Hotel painted on the windshield. The hotel won't tell you about this bus because it's not connected to them.
Entertainment: Very good. The performers work hard to give you a good show. It was better than many other places I have been to.
The dancers are excellent and the hotel Entertainment Team does a
great job both in the daytime and at night.
Tipping: The room maid of course (average $2 per day). We split it up and tipped her 3 times during the week. We always gave it to her personally to be sure that someone else did not get the tip if it was left in the room. We tipped the waiter at the specialty restaurants only ($2). If we had the same waiter or bartender all the time we would have tipped them too. We saw very little tipping being done. To me, it's really a matter of rewarding special service. It was not necessary to tip beforehand to get service.
Restaurant reservations: It's not as bad as many are making it out to be. We got to the lineup each day we wanted one, at 8:00 am, and got a reservation for an early sitting at the one of our choice each time.
From 8:00 to 9:00 we had a coffee and chatted with the other people there. Think of it as a social time. We met and talked with nice people we would not have met otherwise. The time passed quickly and was worth it. We ate at the gourmet (Sir Lawrence) twice, Japanese, and Mexican. I rate them in that order. Our service was excellent all 4 times. Our entire meal each time took 1 1/2 hrs. We ate in the main buffet 3 times and it was always good. With this system you can eat at a specialty restaurant every night if you wish.
Overall, we had a wonderful time and we're sorry we had not booked 2 weeks. We would gladly go again next year.
