We spent two weeks at the Riu in January. Simply wonderful. We flew from Toronto with SkyService (Sunquest Vacations). Flying over Baja, we were taken aback by the hills, beaches and desert. Were met by the Sunquest rep and whisked away. The ride to hotel was about 45 minutes and the tour guide provided us with very interesting information. The hotel sits out on open land and first impression from road looks like that of a palace - very impressive. Check-in had one minor glitch but was remedied quickly. Our east facing ocean front room over-looked the Sea of Cortez, the port (which harbored on an average one cruise ship a day), frequent swim-bys of sea lions, dolphins and one sighting of a whale and the famous land's end. The rooms were very clean and tastefully decorated. We headed out each morning about 8:30 to make reservations for all four a la carte restaurants and were fortunate to have had an opportunity to dine at all restaurants, Japanese (very authentic and tastefully decorated) and Mexican/Italian (very romantic) were our favorites. It seems that each restaurant carries a different selection of wines and we were able to find a favorite at each. We have stayed at other 5 star hotels, namely Sandals, Jamaica & Bahamas and both agree the food was of a 5-star quality, (even after 2 weeks were not bored with selection) As we ate at the late sittings (9:00 p.m.) we only caught the final moments of each night's show - then headed off into the disco, which opens at 11:00 p.m. nightly. Every night a different crowd allowed the DJ to adjust his tunes and a good time was had by all. Getting into town, you can walk by beach, (about 45 minutes), walk by roadway (20 minutes) (taxi $10.00 US one-way) or white bus at hotel entrance 60 pesos. We visited Cabo three times, the usual markets, some upscale stores which cater to cruise-ship visitors. Also, a good selection of bars, including Cabo Wabo, owned by Sammy of Van Halen fame. If you are more of a "walk along a quiet beach type, head north and you have about a half-mile available to you, only to be shared by other beach-walkers and the horse-back riders. Although we aren't "pool people" the two very large heated pools with swim-up bars overlooking the Sea appeared to host and please many. I had a manicure at spa and for the $25 US was as good, if not better than those that I have had back home. My husband went to the gym on several occasions, its small but he was able to walk off a few of those extra pounds from his holiday eating. Check out the "his & hers" hot tubs behind spa on roof, a nice break. All of the staff: cleaning, front desk, waiters, captains, bartenders were friendly, smiled and greeted us with an Ola. Although this fine hotel will be celebrating only its 2nd month anniversary in February, there was nothing about the facility or staff that indicated that. I would not hesitate in returning or recommend the Palace to anyone. Miss it already!
