I was married at the Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas, Mexico on May 8, 2008. We arrived with 40 friends and family and had the most amazing week of our lives! I don't normally write reviews but after seeing the resort on the news yesterday (29 year old man shot to death at Riu Palace) I felt compelled to give the resort the props they so rightfully deserve.
First to address the sad business of a man losing his life.....terrible and my sympathies to his loved ones. Now to be a bit of a cold hearted cow......I have a strong suspicion, that he was up to no good and paradise or not, if you are looking for trouble, you can and will find it!
This was my 2nd time to Cabo San Lucas and I absolutely love it there. I have traveled extensively - Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Cayman Islands, Bahamas, Curacao, Miami/Orlando/The keys, Cancun, Cozumel, etc..... when planning my wedding I knew we would have at least 20 family/friends with us and the age range was from 2 1/2 to 70 years of age. I needed a SAFE, family friendly place where the young crowd could party (safely), where my 2 1/2 year old nephew would be safe and have fun and where our more mature guests could also relax and have a safe and enjoyable time. The ONLY place I had confidence in booking to attain this was CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO.
Now on to the Riu Palace - palacial it is....gorgeous manicured lawns and gardens, the hotel is very well maintained, clean and hotel staff is very friendly with an excellent grasp of English. They have 2 very large pool areas - one is the side for quiet sun bathing, reading a book, sipping some cocktails and just relaxing. The other pool is staffed by Riu Entertainment and has speakers that play music all afternoon, water volleyball, water basketball, water polo, and they run all kinds of games and contests throughout the day....take your pick.....both were fabulous and always had plenty of room for you to lounge. The pool side service was excellent - please remember to bring a little extra to tip these incredibly hard working employees.
Our room was 4109 and overlooked the party pool area, we had an amazing view of the pool, grounds of the Riu, ocean and the rock formation at the end of the Baja - the Arch and lovers beach.....the room was clean, well appointed and our view was incredible. Room service was quick and friendly. Every night our bed was turned down and we were greeted with a cute towel animal each night - swans, dog, etc...corny but cute. Again be sure to tip your house-keeper!!!!
The buffet was enormous and varied throughout the week - some repeats but really what do you expect! The specialty restaurants were quite good as well. The Japanese restaurant was really nice- vegetable tempura a bit weak but really people we are in Mexico here!!!! The dessert was killer - get the banana roll and have someone else get the deep fried ice cream and share them together......killer!!!
The Mexican restaurant is where we had our rehearsal dinner prior to the wedding - it was very good. Staff were very attentive and friendly. I had fajitas and they were good - not excellent but good. They also had a buffet with salad/appetizers and dessert which was great. We sat on the terrace and had the most incredible view of the sunset - some of my favorite sunset pics are from that terrace. (I will see if this site will allow me to attach pics and will leave some for your viewing). Also make note that at lunch the Mexican restaurant serves up an Italian buffet lunch and this was something we did not find out til the end of our trip and the lunch there was excellent! Make sure you try it at least once - and it's right off the party pool so you don't have to stray far from your lounger.
Our wedding took place at the San Jose Gazebo and our reception dinner was at the Steak House. The wedding was PERFECT.....surprisingly cause I really wasn't expecting it to be perfect....as every bride has been warned something usually will go wrong but enjoy your day....well the wedding co-ordinators Danielle O'Campo and Monica Diaz were top notch. They ensured our day was perfect and I am sooo thankful to the both of them for making my wedding day a dream come true! The steak house was excellent - the only thing I did not realize is that the Steak House is an outdoor terrace. They have blinds/dividers to make it feel a bit more private but I would have preferred to actually be walled in to a private room/restaurant. That being said, it was still perfect! We arranged to have the mariachi band play for an hour at the reception (it cost an additional $600 dollars) and was well worth it. They were great and added a real authentic feel to the Mexican wedding. For dinner we had a cold plate of seafood - ceviche, salmon, shrimp, mussels and then had a chicken caesar salad which was really good, then had steak and lobster or some chicken dish (I had the steak and lobster ) with vegetables - delicious!!! Finished off with a rum flambee (spelling?) that barely anyone ate cause we were sooo stuffed from the main course. I did try a bit of it and it was yummy as well.
Our ceremony was a legal ceremony and therefore the officiate did our vows/ceremony in Spanish. The resort gave us the option of having our co-ordinator, Danielle, do the translation to English or we could have one of our guests....so after my Father walked me up the aisle - he stood beside the officiate and read the English translation which was very special to us as it seemed like my Dad was marrying me. There was not a dry eye in the house...or shall I say on the beautifully decorated gazebo/garden area. I had the Royal Package and it was perfect for our group/requirements.
We did a few excursions off the resort as well:
Lovers Beach - I actually didn't go to this beach and am sorry to have missed it....apparently you can take the water taxi (approx $12) to Lovers Beach (beside the arch at the very tip of the Baja were the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez) and it was gorgeous apparently. Excellent scuba/snorkelling and the water crashing on the Pacific side is something to experience.
ATV riding: we arranged this with the agent at the Riu and I believe the cost was about $40 per person....we had around 12 people go and it was great fun....very dirty but fun.
SPORT FISHING: we chartered 2 boats with Redrum sport fishing ahead of arriving to Cabo...redrum has a very good reputation for sport fishing and we were not disappointed. Altho my now husband, sister in law and I all provided the "chum"......we puked due to the motion......it was still an excellent (once the gravol kicked in) experience. My husband caught a yellow fin tuna that we kept and took immediately after landing to the the Artisan Sushi Restaurant at the marina and they made up our fresh catch into amazing sushi - we had about 6-7 different dishes with the tuna he caught! It was soooo good!! My bridesmaids (Vivian) fiance James fought a marlin for about an hour - it was about 9' and put up an amazing fight - jumping out of the water...getting close to the boat and then jetting far off into the ocean for another battle....it was incredible just to watch him battle it....he opted to catch and release his striped marlin.....I on the other hand....caught a 7'2", 130 lb striped marlin and in all the excitement decided I wanted a trophy fish.....so it is going to now cost me approx $1500 when all is said and done for Cabo Road Kill....to be mounted god only knows where in my house!!!!! My hubby makes fun of me on a regular basis now for that and any time he decides to go golfing and I dare put up a complaint I get reminded of my $1500 road kill.....he'll be golfing a fair bit this summer!!!!! We had 13 people on the sport fishing trip and with chartering the 2 boats (the El Nuevo and the RedBeam) the cost was $120 per person. This included our fishing licenses, bait, equipment, 2 Redrum employees per boat, lunch which was: a turkey/cheese sandwich, orange, cookies, chips and a few other snacks (being sick I only had a few oreo cookies) water, and beer -which once I stopped hurling (I actually only provided the "chum" once) I drank plenty of and then felt great!
Some of our group rented a van and drove about an hour north to the town of Todos Santos to see the home of "the Hotel California" and to shop at the jewellery, clothing and artisan shops....I missed this trip as I was golfing but really wanted to go...especially after seeing the beautiful jewellery and clothing my Mom and Aunt bought really cheap! Next time I'm in Cabo I'm definitely getting out to Todos Santos.
Which brings me to the last excursion we did......Golfing at the Cabo San Lucas Golf and Country Club. The course offers a discount to Riu Palace guests and I highly recommend an early tee time...which we did and we were still really hot by the end of it. The course was really nice, again very friendly people, clean with proper/clean amenities and the beer cart lady was excellent!!! I managed to golf an 81 (after 10 holes which is were I retired and spend the rest of the time heckling my hubby, and our friends while enjoying the ice cold beer my new best friend the beer cart lady provided!).
I hope you managed to read all of this review....I tend to be a little long winded - just ask my boss or my new husband - either will agree........but long story short the Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas was a fabulous resort and we are all planning a return trip to celebrate our 5 year anniversary.
Hope you go and enjoy yourself.
PS: dont miss out on heading into town to Sammy Hagar's Cabo Wabo and the Gigglin Marlin - excellent night life and if you want a crazy night club feel - hit Squid Row too......then afterwards make sure you get some Mexican Street Meat....the burrito truck....it is the best street meat and really helps soak up the tequila and other bevies you'll consume.
Cheers!
