Don't let the negative reviews scare you off...My family and I just got back last night from a 5 day stay at the Riu. It is a really beautiful place to relax and enjoy the hospitality and weather. The food was great with an excellent variety. My husband is a athlete and health nut and he found a wonderful variety of healthy choices and tasty too. My son is a picky eater and was always able to find something he liked...particularly the chicken and the seafood saute. I was just happy to not have to think of a menu, cook or clean dishes.
About the safety/thieft issues....no problem...get a safe key and use it (duh!)
If you book some of the activities online via your package deal, make sure you have actually paid for the activity. I thought I had purchased a massage at the spa and it turned out that I had only booked a reservation...easily misunderstood. No problem..just paid and got the BEST massage ever with Marta on the porch overlooking the beach!!! Started the trip out perfect.
This is a family friendly place and also they accomodate the party people as well. They have such huge grounds that it is separated into the more mellow part of the hotel and the more party area. Swim up bars are really beautiful and service is great. But consider that you are sitting in water with alot of people drinking and not leaving for long periods of time....eewww!
Before we left, my husband was saying he wants to come back in the late summer. I cannot stress enough how friendly and accomodating and service oriented the staff is...they keep a smile and are gracious even with the most difficult of guests.
Here are the cons: The beds are pretty firm ...I like more soft. There is no ATM on the property so you don't have access to cash (this could be good if you suffer from impuse spending). There isn't a clear policy on tipping. I didn't see many people doing this. We tipped. There are no in hotel movies or in room internet, so if you have a preteen who likes to take a break from the sun and relax watching a movie, better bring your portable DVD player.
My suggestion for the hotel would be to create a kids club with older kids in mind. They have a toddler to maybe six year old daycare, but not much for the elementary to preteen set.
Overall this is a great vacation choice! Photos forthcoming!
