If you have read previous reviews and were starting to get worried about your trip....FEAR NOT! The RIU Palace is a beautiful hotel with stunning views from every area of the resort!
I emailed the hotel a few days before my arrival saying that I was booked in an ocean view jr. suite, and I requested a room close to the pool with an amazing view of lovers beach. That is exactly what I got. I was whisked away to room 2241 which couldn't have been better. While it is a longer walk to the lobby...we had the BEST views of the arch & lovers beach! And...being farther from the lobby, bars & disco meant we didn't have any late night disruptions/noise as others have mentioned. We also had the option of walking through the pool area to the lobby which drastically shortened our commute to the main area of the hotel.
Our room was nicely appointed. It could have used a few more outlets or a separate dressing area, but we made due. Maid service was pretty much done at the same time every day and our fridge was stocked daily with 7 bottles of corona, tons of water & soda as well. Loved that the fridge was super cold and everything was well chilled. Perfecto!
The grounds are picture perfect. The pools sparkling clean. Plenty of loungers & shade for everyone. I did play the towel game in the morning to reserve front row loungers facing the ocean (usually around 8am). The hotel requests that guests DO NOT reserve chairs, however it was not enforced. If you wanted a prime location lounger, you had no choice. The swim up bars started looking a little "cloudy" late in the day, but I guess that is to be expected.
I knew before heading to this resort that I would not be swimming in the ocean. I live at the beach, and thought I would struggle most with this issue. I didn't care at all! Cabo has so much to offer, that the trade off of ocean swimming meant nothing. The sand is rough and rocky in texture....and a little rough on the feet until you get used to it. There is a big drop off down to the water and at certain times during the day, the waves would break right on the beach. I'm talking BIG waves. I would not have considered swimming there. There were many people pulled out of the water. In fact, you even need to be careful about walking too close. There were a few episodes where waves came out of nowhere and literally knocked over/sucked people into the water. I would be EXTREMELY careful with young children.
The food was very good. Not just okay...very good. Buffet items were kept at the proper temperatures and were constantly replenished. There was MORE than enough to eat and varied to satisfy everyone. My biggest gripe about my entire trip was that the reservation system for dinner is absolutely ridiculous! The last thing I wanted to do was waste 30 minutes to an hour standing around waiting to make a reservation. I expect more from the RIU Palace, and this area is not acceptable. The first day, we arrived to the hotel around 3PM, and was told that it was too late to reserve for a specialty restaurant. (Not necessarily what you want to hear after traveling 10+ hours to get there.....) The next three days, I chose not to wait in line at 9:40. I went to the desk around 11:00 and was still able to obtain reservations for several of the restaurants, but never the gourmet. On the last day, I was not able to get a reservation ANYWHERE. They would only allow you to make ONE reservation at a time. No booking in advance. I have stayed at other all-inclusive resorts where reservations are not even required. The Palace needs to figure this out. Unacceptable.
We did NOT experience any theft at this hotel. We read plenty of reviews prior to going and felt well informed. All important items were kept in the safe and the key was with us at all times. I felt the maid overstepped her bounds only once with our personal items. She moved all of our clothes from the bench in the room into the closet. (even our clean stuff) So, while the room looked much nicer, I would have preferred her not to handle our personal items. Nothing appeared to be missing.
Now...onto the town of Cabo! What a fun place! It is a $10 cab ride each way from the Palace. Most cabs are "van" sized and so you can easily split the cost with others guests traveling at the same time. It literally takes about 7 minutes to get there. During the day, I preferred the bars & restaurants in the Marina area. My favorite lunch spot was "ALEXANDER RESTAURANT" which was just steps from the No Where Bar right on the Marina. They lured me under the red & white striped canopy with their 2 for 1 margarita specials (the BEST we had in Cabo) and their fantastic coconut shrimp and jalapeno popper appetizers! YUM YUM YUM. It was SO good, and the servers were so nice...that we went back for snacks a few days later. Try the Tahi shrimp appetizer. WOW. We also hit all of the crazy bars which really weren't my thing...but we checked them out just as well. Great if you are in your 20's...but at that point, I was ready to head back to the Palace instead! We also ate dinner on our last night at the MOST ROMANTIC, unbelievable place carved into the side of a mountain with views of Cabo. It was called "Mona Lisa"...and was less than 10 minutes from the Palace (in the opposite direction of town.) Dinner with pre-dinner cocktails, shared salad, entrees & bottle of wine with tip was around $230. (all seafood/italian dishes) Excellente! You will be blown away by the beauty of the "natural" environment of this restaurant! Perfect for a special occasion!
The locals around the Marina are relentless. Constant time share stuff, fishing charters etc. You can't walk more than 10 steps before being accosted again. I understand that is how their money is made, but wow, it gets tough being nice! We finally figured out that you just need to say...sorry...we are leaving tomorrow and they'd leave us alone. We did that every time we went to town and it worked. (Thank goodness)
Last mini gripes before I end this lengthly review. I don't understand why guests would walk into a lunch or breakfast buffet in bare feet and without a cover up. It just seems unsanitary and I was SHOCKED at how many people would do it. There were others walking around the pool area with BOTTLES of beer from their room. HELLO? There is a reason the staff serves drinks in plastic rather than glass.
Bottom line after all is said and done....I would NOT hesitate to go back to the Riu Palace. Next time, I'm going for more nights and am splitting my trip up between the Palace and a non all inclusive in town. So much to see and do! Enjoy!
PS. Feel free to email me with any questions concerning the resort. I also checked out the Santa Fe next door and could share some photos info on that as well.
