“Awesome location on Medano beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

Awesome location right on Medano beach. Cabo San Lucas downtown is a 5 min drive away. The resort is well maintained and the rooms are spacious. The food and drinks service is great. Only problem was getting reservations at some of the speciality restaurants is a pain. You need to call first thing in the morning since they allow reservations only for the same day. The only disapointment was the wifi in the rooms was very poor and the tech support help desk wasn't too helpful (I believe it was some outsourced 3rd party company).

Read all the negative reviews and our group of five had a great time! Had a beautiful ocean view with clean comfortable beds with no musty smell.Food and drinks were great, pool was wonderful. Remember this is Mexico,we travel a lot and the Riu was great!

Need to get away? This is the place. You have the option to do almost anything or nothing at all. Staff was nice and helpful. The rooms were small, but the pool and beach is why you are there. resorts are known not to have the best food. The Riu had options, but reservations fill up quickly. First come first serve to sign up for the reservations had to be part of your daily morning schedule.

This was the perfect all inclusive vacation for our family ages 6 years to 61 years. The first truly all inclusive place we've gone to - drinks, minibar, tips all included. Staff very friendly and helpful and all spoke enough English to answer our questions. Great pool, Food was consistently very good. New Year's Eve buffet included lobster, roast beef, sushi and great deserts. Booked our trip through Expedia who had a person on site during the day to help arrange excursions. Lots of places to eat. Lots of room to spread out. One recommendation - several restaurants in the facility require reservations and book early. I suggest making these reservations on the day of arrival.

This was our third time to spend the Christmas/New Yeah holiday at Riu Palace. Same Stephanie B, we noticed that this is definitely not the best. The room that we were assigned was on the third floor east wing, since this is a main drag to all to other area and the hallways are all tiled. We could hear most people walked by at night, people walked with their luggage, as well as the service carts. If they talked, we could hear that from a distance. The fire alarm outside our room set off the first 2 nights we were there in the middle of the night, and it kept coming on and off through out the days. This time we noticed that they have set up non-smoking area the the theater area, however, there were still lots of people ignore the sign on the tables and still light up.

Room Tip: Since that the hallways are all tiled, choosing a less traffic room might be better for quiet sleep...

We booked a large group through Signature Vacations Dec 27 to Jan 3, and were told this was a five star property but it is probably closer to a 3. The rooms are nice and very clean. T.V's are at least 10+ years old. The property itself is also kept in immaculate condition and very clean. Rooms are not very soundproof and you can continually hear doors slamming and people talking.
The buffet offered a large variety of food which was quite good however over half of our group complained of stomach sickness and cramps throughout the trip, with a few loosing a full day. Everything seemed to be inconsistant. The coffee in one bar was terrible, and at the buffet if was not always warm. Most of the salt and pepper shakers were plugged so we had to start carrying toothpicks to unplug them. The service at the bars again was very inconsistant. Many times we would wait for over 20 minutes for our drink then be asked again by another waiter if they could help and order another drink. Almost always two drinks would arrive at once. Tipping did not seem to help. The wine was cheap. It was very difficult to book the a la carte resturants however when the steak house was finally booked the food was so poor some just returned to the buffet. I would not recommend either the Japenese Resturant and definitely not the Steak House. The ice cream machine continually ran out of cones and when asked it took over 20 minutes to get some. The cheese from the Nacho's would be good one day and the next like water.

Service at the front counter was good at check-in but when I went back to exchange some money I waited over 5 minutes while 4 staff looked after one couple.

The entertainment was O.K. however the stage is not viewable from all locations.

As we paid over $300.00 per person per day ($600 per room), we expected much better accomodations and service. I will not be returning nor recommending.

Room Tip: We stayed on the fourth floor, which had a good view however it was very noisy.

We traveled to Riu the week of Dec 22, 2012. There were so many great things about this hotel. The grounds and pools are beautiful and well maintained. The staff is friendly and helpful and spoke English extremely fluently. The Christmas Eve dinner was terrific. We enjoyed all of the food - the buffets had a huge variety. The Mexican restaurant pre-dinner appetizer buffet was fantastic (better than the entrees) and the Japanese place was good. The lunch buffet outdoors is really nice and having the refrigerated cases is a great touch. We had no hassles at all, we even got chairs by the pool (the quiet one but nonetheless) without having to stake them out in the morning. The room was large and the bathroom was really big. The decor throughout the hotel is very rich - lots of dark colonial woods, very beautiful. Our balcony view was of the gardens and to the right was the ocean and pools, very nice and restful.
The water in the room is not potable so we used bottled water and we did not have any issues at all.
HOWEVER, the room did have a terrible musty odor that was really off putting. We called the desk and they sent someone up to clean the traps in the bathroom and check the a/c. It helped a little. Mostly what we had to do was leave our glass door open as much as possible with fan on. There was definitely something bad going on in sofa or the curtains that needs to be addressed. We've traveled a lot in the Caribbean and Mexico and I'm used to a little musty but this was bad, very bad. (Our room was 3041 if it helps anyone). The sofa was also pretty torn up and not in keeping with the maintenance of the hotel.
Also if a nice fitness center is important to you, you'll be a little disappointed. Very mediocre equipment with no TVs and little space to put your water bottle or iphone.
It looks like from other reviews that the odor is not throughout so I don't know what to say. There were so many great things about this hotel and I'd definitely try another Riu elsewhere but...
