The Riu Palace was a good place to get away for 3-5 nights. The lobby is gorgeous with a Spanish colonial vibe, some of the art was a little odd, but the indoor/outdoor living areas are fantastic. The open air bar off the lobby has 5 star views. The hotel was not 5 stars as touted, but would be somewhere between 3-4 in most categories. It is large (650+ rooms) and has a cruise ship feel, which I did not like. That being said, my husband and I like to do our own thing and not be bothered which we were able to do. There are a few core professional staff that are congenial but busy. The Mexican wait staff and housekeepers rarely spoke English making simple requests difficult. Fortunately, my husband speaks Spanish and we found everyone cordial and accomodating.
Quanity rules over quality. Drinkers will love this place. The house rum and vodka were medicinal and ruined otherwise pretty cocktails that were undrinkable. There are no top shelf liquors but do ask for the middle quality such as Bacardi in order to solve this problem. The food was mostly buffet unless you have the inclination to stand in line for a restaurant at 9:40-10:30 am. However, the buffets offered great variety and decent quality. Vegetarians and meat eaters will be satisified. Gluttons will be in heaven. Do not miss the coconut ice cream, various fish dishes, and Mexican specialties (especially breakfast and the salsas). Some things were lacking: The only decaf coffee is instant, espresso was only available at the Mexican/Italian restaurant on the beach, and no Horchata or Tamarindo drinks.
The junior suite was nothing special but it was clean and charming. We did smell sporadic sewer odor in our room and stairwells. The bathroom door has shutters so noises are heard throughout the room (hopefully you will be comfortable with your roommate). The hotel hallways are tiled so noises echo. We never saw our neighbors but we did hear doors closing starting at about 7 am and in the night sporadically.
The crowd was mostly American but there were Europeans, giving it an international vibe. However, the party mentality ruled at the pool bars. Most people (8 out of 10) were overweight. There were a few children but not annoying.
The amenities for children were o.k. but no pool slide and they might get bored. The kids club at the Sante Fe, next door, looked nicer.
The identical pools make for a pretty view but not as much fun as if they were different, giving you different things to do. The beach is nice with a rough shore break at times. Somehow, the water taxis are able to come on to shore briefly to wisk passengers away to town or the harbor. The beach is federal property so there are solictors and horses (and manure) outside the rope, detracting from the pleasure. The view is gorgeous.
Do rent the wave runners ($80/hour) and go to the arches. Also, loved the Pez Gato catamaran snorkeling cruise - we got to see the arches, whales, snorkel, and have lunch and cocktails for $45 pp a real deal.
