This was our first time trading our timeshare and I'm glad we picked Cabo San Lucas and the Hacienda del Mar. The hotel is a Sheraton property and it is beautifully landscaped. All the employees we met were very friendly and helpful. Check in was very quick except for the timeshare portion, after you check in you are greeted by a timeshare rep who wants you to attend a presentation your first morning there. We already own a timeshare why would we want another one. She wanted to charge us $20 and we would get it back when we came to the presentation. After traveling 10 hours I just want to get to my room.
Our room was called a studio unit but it was huge with 2 queen beds, a separate sitting area with kitchenette, 2 flat screen tvs and a huge balcony. The 1st part of the balcony has 2 chairs and a small table and was covered the 2nd part had 2 lounge chairs and a table and was under a pergola to give you some sun protection and the 3rd part was out in the open if you wanted to sunbathe. 1 draw back to the room was the noise, it definitely was not soundproof we could hear the people upstairs walking around and dropping things and every morning at 4:00 someone's car alarm would go off. We were in room 3816 which is at the very edge of the resort and actually overlooked the service area which had a large hole where trash was dumped. You couldn't see it if you were on the lounge chairs only if you stood up and looked that way.
I found the restaurants to be pricey. Breakfast buffet at Tomatoes cost us $55 for 2. Girasoles breakfast was by far the best $17.50 each all you can eat off a menu. We shopped at WalMart for food and drinks so we didn't have to eat out every morning. All the food we had at the hotel was delicious. We went fishing 1 day and the chef at Girasoles cooked it for us that night and it was very good. We had a very romantic dinner at De Cortez, sat on the patio overlooking the beach with a huge full moon over the ocean. We never ate at Pitahayas but we loved to have a drink at the bar there and look out at the ocean. Also El Suerte was a beautiful location to see the ocean and the pool.
We took a fishing excursion with Marina's Fleet the captain was Arturo Moreno. This was probably the most disappointing part of the trip. We paid $400 for an 8 hour trip then had to pay for the fishing licenses $34, live bait $30 and to get on the dock another $1. We brought our own lunches and drinks. About 45 mins outside the harbor we caught 3 mahi mahi. We went further up the coast about 45 mins and just circled the same area for 6 hours and never caught anything else. The captain obviously didn't want to waste his gas going further out and then he never used the bait we paid for. When we got back to the marina he expected us to give him all the fish. We gave him 1 and kept the other 2 even though we knew we wouldn't be able to eat it all. There are much better companies to use with much better boats.
We golfed at the desert course and the ocean course and although everyone seemed to think the ocean course was the better one and more picturesque we did not agree. The desert course is beautifully manicured with views of the ocean as well. There were a couple holes on the ocean course that seemed to be thrown in just to say they have 4-5 holes on the ocean.
Another issue we had was the rental car we booked. I did not know in Mexico if you rent a car they will be putting a hold on your credit card. I turned down the optional insurance and was told there would be a $3000 hold on my CC. I decided to go with the full insurance but there was still going to be a hold of $1500 because the insurance doesn't cover the interior. Needless to say I cancelled the rental and took the airport shuttle. As it turned out we really didn't need a car. The hotel offers a shuttle to town for $10 r/t per person. Only problem is if you want to stay out late the last shuttle back to the hotel is at 9:30.
All in all Cabo is beautiful, the weather was perfect mid 80's during the day to high 50's at night. the hotel was beautiful and comfortable but a little bit of a distance from town and we met a lot of very nice people, employees as well as guests.
