“nice property, good vacation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

just returned from a week at hacienda del mar. the grounds are nice. we were unfortunately stuck in one of the back buildings so not a great location, but the walk to the beach wasn't that bad and the trees are pretty. the food is good but expensive. good thing we had a kitchen! the beach is dangerous, so not a good place for swimming. we did some wave jumping though. room was in good shape and beds are comfortable. the one problematic thing is lounge chairs by the pool. they have signs that say don't hold chairs, but it's crazy -- if you're down there after 7am EVERYTHING is taken. there are towels on every chair. i don't understand why people save chairs like that. we would spend the afternoon in the pool and only about 1/3 of the chairs would actually be used, the rest just "saved".

pools were nice. kids didn't like the kiddie pool since it wasn't heated so we ended up in the big pools the whole time. definitely rent a car as the hotel is a distance from everything.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

We recently stayed at the hotel in March for an eight day stay. Our children are ages 6 and 10 (two boys). I used my Starwood points to secure a one BR suite. The suite had a limited service kitchen (no dishwasher) but did have a good sized refrigerator, microwave and a cooktop. The unit was in average shape in my opinion with dated fixtures and furniture. We had an average unit from my perspective (limited ocean view, unit was over a service garage which workers started working at seriously 4am). I am used to getting such less desirable units when I use my points. In the end, the unit was decent for our needs. On arrival you will get the typical hard sell on resort amenities, time share etc. This is to be expected but it is rather annoying. I just told them no thanks and they literally kept following me. At least get the 15% food and beverage discount card for dinners (we used it everyday at Tomatoes for breakfast with no problem). As for the food on this resort, I would say very average. Tomatoes had a good breakfast buffet which suited us fine. De Cortez restaurant does have a beautiful setting; however, food was very average. Do yourself a favor and hit Cabo or San Jose for much better food (our favorites: Villa Vallentina is EXCELLENT (very cool setting with shops/art gallery.....DINNER ONLY DUE TO CONSTRUCTION), La Dolce in SAN JOSE, Mi Casa CABO (fun for kids), Salvatores CABO, Maro Shrimp house CABO, Ediths CABO (pricey but good), Flora Farms SAN JOSE (WOW!). Make reservations for best service. We rented a car because we know our way around. Easy to catch a cab from hotel...and apparently there are shuttles that go into town frequently. The resort has some great pools for kids. Beach is decent; however, the riptide is brutal so it is not really a family beach per se. You can drive to other beaches but we just sat tight and hung out around the pool. Saw whales breaching every day. Very cool. Service was above average at hotel. Concierge staff VERY helpful. Grounds at the hotel were immaculate. Fitness center decent (only ONE upright bike!). We would return again for sure.

Room Tip: Don't get stuck at back of resort or you will be walking pretty far to pools/beach

This was our first-ever timeshare exchange and our first time in Baja, so we had no idea what to expect from either the resort or the area. We were simply amazed by how gorgeous Hacienda del Mar is: the architecture is reminiscent of the Spanish-colonial city-centers of Mexican cities like Oaxaca and Puebla, with mosaic-tiled fountains and lavishly landscaped courtyards (which attract scores of beautiful birds!). We rented a car and took day trips to places like Cabo, San Jose, and Todos Santos, but many guests never leave the property -- they luxuriate at the many pools and hot tubs, stroll along the beach with its magnificent cliffs, and eat and drink at the many wonderful and varied restaurants. We were there during whale-calving season, and ate every morning at the rooftop restaurant in our building, (Girasol), not just for the fine food and service, but for the fantastic views of whales breaching just offshore. We stayed at Villa 11 on the 2nd floor and had a fine ocean view from the patio, through the palm trees filled with birds. The room exceeded our expectations in all ways.

My wife and I do have one major criticism of this otherwise-perfect resort though: LOUD music was piped into the pool are, into all of the restaurants but the one we loved, Girasol, and most insulting, right down on the beach!!!. We did not fly several thousand miles to Baja, Mexico to hear LOUD music; we wanted to hear the beautiful sound of the surf. We ALWAYS asked for the music to be turned off and - -after protesting - -the staff always honored our request. All the guests AND staff we spoke with agreed that this piped-in music is very annoying and that they would much prefer to hear the sound of the sea... There is some ongoing hotel conspiracy that dictates that vacationers need party music at all times in order to relax. Maybe if more people complain that party music does not equal a good time when trying to relax this will someday change and we can hear the waves.

The staff was friendly, helpful and efficient across the board. My wife made the ongoing effort to speak her beginners Spanish to everyone there and they were always appreciative and helped her improve. I rented a nice 2013 Passat from the on-site Budget ($60 a day with all insurance coverage) and had absolutely no problems driving extensively throughout the lower part of the peninsula.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that does not have an outside equipment closet next to it, or you will hear a small b...

We have stayed a total of 50 weeks at the Hacienda del Mar Vacation Club over a period of 18 years. We purchased the time share with the intention of usiing it and not trading. This place is so great it is probably difficult, if not impossible to trade into. Besides being one of the best looking (architecturally speaking and groundskeeping) properties in the area, the staff leaves nothing to chance. I have met many of the staff over the years and am always happy to become reacquaiinted with them and am sorry to see them go, when they move on. Some weeks the surf is breathtaking and you can only watch it and listen to the pounding waves. We have also had the pleasure of swimming in the Sea of Cortez, but I admit the yellow flag doesn't come out very often. Although a bit late, duriing this trip we were fortunate enough to see very active whales on two occasions. We normally get glimpses, but every now and then... We have also watched turtles hatch and migrate across the beach into the surf. Mostly you just go there because you love it. We stay in a two bedroom, which has good-sized rooms, beautiful bathrooms, a nice kitchen (if you are missing something, just ask for it and it appears) and lovely living room/ dining area and decks. But nothing can outshine the staff. We have come with parents, and now with friends. Staying fifty weeks and never trading out just about sums it up.

Room Tip: Can't help you there. I don't think many owners trade-out, so pickings can be slim.

Considering this was a time share swap, I was happy with the resort and accomodations with a few complaints. The resort itself is beautiful. The grounds are immaculate and the pool areas very nice. The pools and hot tubs close at 7pm which we did not like. The beach has nice chairs and umbrellas also but the waves make actually swimming in the ocean dangerous. For the restaurants, Girasoles was very good as the reviews suggested and we ate there several times. Our one meal at Tomates was very good also.

We got a 2 bedroom, 3 bathroom room for 3 people. Building 15 is toward the back and we walked outside our door to the kids pool. This would have been nice if we had kids with us but it wasn't noisy or a problem. The large patio faced a very small but beautifully landscaped "backyard" which if you looked over the road and through the trees had and "ocean view". The room itself was richly appointed but dark and dated. The beds and bedrooms were large and comfortable. Loved the large dining room table and the kitchen was adequate for us because we didn't cook. They need to replace the furniture in the living area. The foam love seat/sleeper is not possible to sit on for more than 5 minutes and the 2 upright wicker chairs are for decoration only.

We prefer not to drive in Mexico due to a past bad experience near the Tijuana border so we paid $40 roundtrip for cab rides into town. The location is rather secluded in an area known as the "corridor" outside of Cabo San Lucas. If I were going to visit Cabo again, I'd either get brave and rent a car or stay at one of the resorts right in town. There was a free shuttle to their golf courses which we used but the resort shuttle to town was nearly the same price as a taxi for 3 people without the convenience.

If you like a secluded beautiful resort away from the Spring Break craziness of the Medano Beach (we visited for a day) and have a car, this is a nice place. I don't know the secret of securing a better room but you probably need to be an owner or get lucky.

Room Tip: Buildings 2,3 and 4 are in front along the ocean and look like the best choices. Buildings 5 - 9 ar...

Yes the resort is gorgeous however the vacation club put us in a room overlooking the parking lot. ( we are rci exchange)Room is nothing like the pictures shown on their website. When I expressed our disappointment in the room ( small fridge tiny partial kitchen , love seat that is uncomfortable not even a full couch and of course the balcony looking at cars in parking area) all they say is check tomorrow. I've checked for three days already. It has really put a damper on my vacation that I have researched for 2 years. I wont stay here ever because of the way they treated us and the constant timeshare calls and hassling every day. We stayed at a lot of timeshares but this room is by far the worst ever. They do have some great rooms with hot tubs on balaconys but how you get those is beyond me. We even tipped the front desk clerk and called before leaving the states. The grounds are really gorgeous though it is a shame that our room is not up to par

Room Tip: Tips for a room....no way to get a nice room if your rci exchange

The bad far outweighs the good here. If you have no budget and tons of cash- this is the place for you. The good - comfortable beds, Clean rooms, polite staff, several nice pools. Pool happy hour is 2 for 1, 2 pm to 4 pm.

The bad. The beach is nice if you just want to look at it. It is red flag every day, and totally unsafe for swimming. Big waves, steep sand and rocks. Total disappointment. The pools are clean and warm- but noisy at times- with The activities gal on the microphone. And get down early to scope out a chair. People were there at 0645.

. The food- every restaurant is expensive - no quick meals here unless you make them yourself. Personally- I got tired of spending min 30$ pp every night just for food. That doesn't include drinks. The food was all good - just pricey. And because of the location- unless you have a car- a taxi to town is 80.00 round trip.

You have to pay 13$ day for Internet - but don't pay for more than a day at a time- we did and had to repay after 24hours anyway- which we will try and sort out.

Airport shuttle- is only available if you book it round trip from home!!! Seriously. Once you are here- you cannot get the shuttle. We have to pay $ 80$ one way for a taxi. And car rentals want $25/ day for insurance. No options. That is on top of car rental fee.

And lastly the annoying time share people- they make you talk to them just after check in. My husband agreed to go to breakfast the following day after they broke us down and practically wouldn't let us go to our room without agreeing. He goes to breakfast- and they will not give him breakfast or talk to him since his wife did not come too. What a scam.

If you can stay somewhere else- do. Go to Cancun- beaches are fabulous and you don't get ripped off for food or transport. We will not be coming back. We travel all over - and this was the least relaxing vacation we have ever had.

Room Tip: If you want privacy- get a 2 bedroom. The sofa bed in living room is smaller than a futon- and unusa...
