“Beautiful Property, Wonderful Staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

We have stayed a total of 50 weeks at the Hacienda del Mar Vacation Club over a period of 18 years. We purchased the time share with the intention of usiing it and not trading. This place is so great it is probably difficult, if not impossible to trade into. Besides being one of the best looking (architecturally speaking and groundskeeping) properties in the area, the staff leaves nothing to chance. I have met many of the staff over the years and am always happy to become reacquaiinted with them and am sorry to see them go, when they move on. Some weeks the surf is breathtaking and you can only watch it and listen to the pounding waves. We have also had the pleasure of swimming in the Sea of Cortez, but I admit the yellow flag doesn't come out very often. Although a bit late, duriing this trip we were fortunate enough to see very active whales on two occasions. We normally get glimpses, but every now and then... We have also watched turtles hatch and migrate across the beach into the surf. Mostly you just go there because you love it. We stay in a two bedroom, which has good-sized rooms, beautiful bathrooms, a nice kitchen (if you are missing something, just ask for it and it appears) and lovely living room/ dining area and decks. But nothing can outshine the staff. We have come with parents, and now with friends. Staying fifty weeks and never trading out just about sums it up.

Room Tip: Can't help you there. I don't think many owners trade-out, so pickings can be slim.

Considering this was a time share swap, I was happy with the resort and accomodations with a few complaints. The resort itself is beautiful. The grounds are immaculate and the pool areas very nice. The pools and hot tubs close at 7pm which we did not like. The beach has nice chairs and umbrellas also but the waves make actually swimming in the ocean dangerous. For the restaurants, Girasoles was very good as the reviews suggested and we ate there several times. Our one meal at Tomates was very good also.

We got a 2 bedroom, 3 bathroom room for 3 people. Building 15 is toward the back and we walked outside our door to the kids pool. This would have been nice if we had kids with us but it wasn't noisy or a problem. The large patio faced a very small but beautifully landscaped "backyard" which if you looked over the road and through the trees had and "ocean view". The room itself was richly appointed but dark and dated. The beds and bedrooms were large and comfortable. Loved the large dining room table and the kitchen was adequate for us because we didn't cook. They need to replace the furniture in the living area. The foam love seat/sleeper is not possible to sit on for more than 5 minutes and the 2 upright wicker chairs are for decoration only.

We prefer not to drive in Mexico due to a past bad experience near the Tijuana border so we paid $40 roundtrip for cab rides into town. The location is rather secluded in an area known as the "corridor" outside of Cabo San Lucas. If I were going to visit Cabo again, I'd either get brave and rent a car or stay at one of the resorts right in town. There was a free shuttle to their golf courses which we used but the resort shuttle to town was nearly the same price as a taxi for 3 people without the convenience.

If you like a secluded beautiful resort away from the Spring Break craziness of the Medano Beach (we visited for a day) and have a car, this is a nice place. I don't know the secret of securing a better room but you probably need to be an owner or get lucky.

Room Tip: Buildings 2,3 and 4 are in front along the ocean and look like the best choices. Buildings 5 - 9 ar...

Yes the resort is gorgeous however the vacation club put us in a room overlooking the parking lot. ( we are rci exchange)Room is nothing like the pictures shown on their website. When I expressed our disappointment in the room ( small fridge tiny partial kitchen , love seat that is uncomfortable not even a full couch and of course the balcony looking at cars in parking area) all they say is check tomorrow. I've checked for three days already. It has really put a damper on my vacation that I have researched for 2 years. I wont stay here ever because of the way they treated us and the constant timeshare calls and hassling every day. We stayed at a lot of timeshares but this room is by far the worst ever. They do have some great rooms with hot tubs on balaconys but how you get those is beyond me. We even tipped the front desk clerk and called before leaving the states. The grounds are really gorgeous though it is a shame that our room is not up to par

Room Tip: Tips for a room....no way to get a nice room if your rci exchange

The bad far outweighs the good here. If you have no budget and tons of cash- this is the place for you. The good - comfortable beds, Clean rooms, polite staff, several nice pools. Pool happy hour is 2 for 1, 2 pm to 4 pm.

The bad. The beach is nice if you just want to look at it. It is red flag every day, and totally unsafe for swimming. Big waves, steep sand and rocks. Total disappointment. The pools are clean and warm- but noisy at times- with The activities gal on the microphone. And get down early to scope out a chair. People were there at 0645.

. The food- every restaurant is expensive - no quick meals here unless you make them yourself. Personally- I got tired of spending min 30$ pp every night just for food. That doesn't include drinks. The food was all good - just pricey. And because of the location- unless you have a car- a taxi to town is 80.00 round trip.

You have to pay 13$ day for Internet - but don't pay for more than a day at a time- we did and had to repay after 24hours anyway- which we will try and sort out.

Airport shuttle- is only available if you book it round trip from home!!! Seriously. Once you are here- you cannot get the shuttle. We have to pay $ 80$ one way for a taxi. And car rentals want $25/ day for insurance. No options. That is on top of car rental fee.

And lastly the annoying time share people- they make you talk to them just after check in. My husband agreed to go to breakfast the following day after they broke us down and practically wouldn't let us go to our room without agreeing. He goes to breakfast- and they will not give him breakfast or talk to him since his wife did not come too. What a scam.

If you can stay somewhere else- do. Go to Cancun- beaches are fabulous and you don't get ripped off for food or transport. We will not be coming back. We travel all over - and this was the least relaxing vacation we have ever had.

Room Tip: If you want privacy- get a 2 bedroom. The sofa bed in living room is smaller than a futon- and unusa...

This was our second time in Cabo and really like the location just outside of the city. The resort has a charming village feel with the architecture quaint and the grounds absolutely beautiful. The area is not that large that you get swallowed up in kind of place. We were in building nine which was right in the middle of the resort. We had an easy walk right down to the pool area. Check in did not allow us to get in any sooner than 4 pm and no ocean front rooms available, only saved for owners. Our one bedroom had just enough space. The living room furniture was not very comfortable and the kitchenette was too small for our liking. It did have all the needed tools to cook along with a cook top and a toaster oven. The bedroom had two queen beds but seemed too enclosed since it only had one small window. We had a nice shower and Jacuzzi with two sink areas. Two nice closets with lots of hangers. Maid did visit every day. There was a $4 daily charge for housekeeping and grounds so we did tip maid daily cause I don't believe she would get much of the fee. There are multi heated pools all along the water front plus two additional pools in the back corners of the resort. The loungers had a nice thick cushion but it was too cramped around the pool deck. You had to get up by 7 AM to get a chair and many were saved by that time. They have a rule that you can not save but they did not enforce. The large pool on the hotel side had a private group reserving the area for three days. Most people were not happy since it didn't seem like they needed that much area and it making it so crowded in the rest of the resort. The beach in very nice with lots of chairs and umbrellas, no charge. There is an area where you can swim at certain times when the waves are not bad. A few vendors are allowed along the beach. We did attend the timeshare talk and this one was not a bad aggressive. We did get a couple of certificates for dinner which we used at Del Cortez and enjoyed very much. Small convenience store like most resorts was available. We did not think the food at the pool area was that great. There was enough self parking available near each building. There was 30 minutes of free internet daily. Odd that I could not receive it in the bedroom area. It was great by the pools. A daily charge of $14 otherwise for use with 3 devices.

This was our third visit to Cabo, though our first stay at the HDM. Our last stay was at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach. As many other reviewers have mentioned, the HDM grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The resort itself is centrally located in the tourist corridor so it's convenient if you have a car; otherwise, be prepared to spend $20-30 each way in to town.

Our room was very clean, spacious for the six of us (3 couples) and included 3 bedrooms, 3½ bath with a fully stocked kitchen, living room, dining room. Do note there is a $4/day cleaning service fee we were not expecting to see on our bill. Our maid did not come to our room 3 of our 7 days (beds were not made, used towels were not replaced); however, we were still charged. When we let the front desk know, they informed us it could not be removed from the bill.

We were thrilled to learn there were a couple of newly placed BBQ grills on the property (i.e. near the kiddy pool) as we booked a fishing trip and planned to bring some of our fresh catch back to the room, in addition to the food we purchased at Costco and Walmart upon our arrival. When we went to use the grills, we found they were chained and locked. When we inquired about them at the front desk, we were unpleasantly informed the cost to use them was $15/day. I also want to point out for meal preparation purposes that the room itself had a coffee maker, cooktop, microwave and a small, counter toaster oven, though it did not work well. There is no oven. I tried baking chicken breasts in the toaster oven. After two hours and them only being half-cooked, I transferred over to pan frying the remainder of the days we ate in. Be sure to make a trip in to Costco and/or Walmart (10 minute drive) for your food, bottled water and alcohol shopping needs as the prices at the onsite convenience store are absurd.

Car rental onsite was $60/day only when renting for multiple days. However, beware…the timeshare sales reps overheard our conversation with the car rental desk rep (as their desks are adjacent) and quickly came over to sign us up for a tour, after which they would give us discounts on car rentals and excursions. Their “discounts” amounted to 20% off, which I felt was not worth a few hours and the hassle of our time. I simply wanted a car and didn’t appreciate the high-pressure. Their excursion discounts were the same prices I could (and did) get at the various activity locations (i.e. jet skis, parasailing, dinner cruises).

Watch for the 2 for 1 happy hour drink specials; otherwise, be prepared to pay for extremely over-priced cocktails (i.e. $12 for a bloody mary). We ate in the various restaurants and found the service ranging from poor to average and the meals to be average at best, and like the drinks, over-priced. A 10-15 minute drive in to town ensured a suburb steak and/or seafood meal, drink(s) and royal treatment service for less, so you’re paying for the convenience factor. The husband of a couple we met during our stay ended up in the hospital for the rest of the week with E.coli following the Tuesday night buffet at Tomatoe's, which we did not par-take in.

The pools were beautiful, though you didn't stand a chance of getting a chair, let alone six, unless you were there at sunrise. We ended up using the upper pool as it guaranteed a chair; however, there was no view, wait staff service or music. We brought a small collapsible cooler that we filled with ice and beverages from our room then brought with us to the pool. We did enjoy using the hot tub overlooking the beach late at night when no one else was around. We simply hit the button and turned the jets on, sat back with our glass of wine and enjoyed the stars.

The beach is beautiful and we enjoyed walking the shoreline as they advised against swimming due to the current. There were a few vendors who approached you, though not like the swarms you’ll find at the beaches in town. We stumbled across the turtle release, which happened right out front of the resort near sunset so be sure to ask about that as it’s a neat experience.

Overall, a good experience, but not so much so that I will search out and stay at HDM for our next trip to Cabo.

I have just returned from the most wonderful vacation at Hacienda del Mar. What a gorgeous setting - Huge, expansive beach with mega crashing waves (makes swimming a challenge, but provides the most beautiful sound). The decor of Hacienda del Mar is classic Mexican - warm colors - yellows, oranges, browns, reds - SPECTACULAR. We ate at several of the restaurants on site including 2 times at Girasol - Margarita, the manager, was exceptional. She was funny, helpful and had amazing guest service skills. The food was delicious. I enjoyed 2 different dishes with Mole and enjoyed lots of guacamole as well. The restaurant Pitahayas was very good also. The tuna tower was out of this world! Wonderful service as well - we really like our waiter Gabriel. We enjoyed breakfasts at Tomatoes; the highlight was that we were overlooking the ocean and we got to enjoy the whale show that happened everyday we were there. The grounds are beautifully manicured with multicolored bougainvillea and tons of palm trees. We thought the guys that worked as life guards and the guys who gave out towels were super helpful getting our lounge chairs set up on the beach and providing an umbrella so we weren't in the sun full time. I also appreciated how the hotel managed the people selling things on the beach. They only allow a few at a time and the sellers were very respectful of the guests. It you said no thank you, they would continue on their way. Not at all bothersome. I also want to recognize Claudia Trujillo. She was very helpful prior to our arrival and helped with some of the pre-planning. I was very appreciate of her attention to detail and her immediate response to my questions. It was really a fabulous experience at Hacienda del Mar.

We enjoyed several restaurants outside of the hotel. Mi Casa in San Jose del Cabo was my favorite. I love the decor - lots of bright colors and greenery. Don't miss the Tres Leches cake. It was devine! Also in San Jose del Cabo was a yummy restaurant called Tropicana. Their homemade chips and guacamole were like nothing I'd ever had before . Our other favorite restaurant was 7 Seas at the Cabo Surf Hotel. Delicious fish, yummy homemade bread with this awesome dipping sauce and then for the grand finale we had banana crepes that were the best I have ever had anywhere!

We rented a car while we were there and found it very easy to get around. I would recommend that if you want to explore more thnt just your hotel.

The final splurge was a massage at Capella Pedregal. It is a five star resort and spa and certainly lives up to its 5 stars. We started out with a steam, ice room and jacuzzi experience. The ice room was my favorite - ice falling from the ceiling and you walk on ice chips - I have never seen anything like this before. Then we got to enjoy different types of flavored water, and apple crisps and then my favorite was the chocolate covered fruit. WOW! Next we were taken to a special room to get a foot massage and then scooted away to our magical massage rooms. I had an incredible masseuse named Irene who I wish I could have brought home with me. She gave me the most fantastic, relaxing massage. Great smelling lotions and potions. 5*****, for sure! Then we enjoyed a swim in the pool and hot tub looking out at the ocean and seeing more whales, before coming back in to enjoy a rain shower. Pure DECADENCE - the entire spa experience.

Our other highlight experience was kayaking off Palmilla beach. We got super close to the whales. It was beyond awe-inspiring.

Fue un viaje MARAVILLOSO!!! I highly recommend a visit to Cabo for anyone who likes sun, beach, adventure, great Mexican food and did I mention the WHALES!?!?!

Besos!
