We just returned from a wonderful trip to Dreams Los Cabos from 12/23/06 -1/3/07. First, let me say that I have read ALL the reviews of Dreams Los Cabos from the last 2 years on Tripadvisor. I was concerned about some of the reviews which were negative. So, my expectations were realistic. Many reviewers are correct when they say don't expect to be staying at a Four Seasons Hotel. This is not a Four Seasons (Thanks God!) What you will get is the following...
Hotel: The Hotel is about 7-8 years old. It is very clean and well maintained. Workers are constantly sweeping, cleaning etc. everywhere. The rooms are very roomy. We had a Junior Suite (Room 212 & 214). I wanted an upper floor at first thinking the ocean view would be fabulous but after getting our ground floor room I was even happier due to the fact we were by the main pool, close to the lobby and main restaurants. We could walk out the patio doors and within 20 seconds be in the lobby or at the pool or at 3 of the restaurants. We had two double beds with a pull out couch. Worked out just perfect. Lots of storage in the room with a closet and a armoire. There is a safe in the room for your valuables as well. Everything worked in our room with no problems found during our stay. The beds are very firm and the pillows aren't the best but again, your not at a Four Season's!
The only negative on the rooms was 2 out of 11 days at Dreams they did not clean our rooms. We did have to ask for more towels since they didn't refill them when the room didn't get cleaned.
Restaurants: El Patio. Great breakfast every morning. Full buffet
with made to order eggs, omletts etc. Fresh fruits, salads, pastries, juices, freshly made smoothies. Tons of food. I read on previous reviews that flies were a big problem. This may be a seasonal thing since I think I saw one fly while we were there.
However, there were many bees (honey bees) that were there due to the fresh fruit etc. They were not a problem, just a little annoying at times. This restaurant holds a different theme night every night inclusing Asian, Korean, Mexican, Italian, Caribbean
etc. The theme nights are bountiful with food but not authentic by any means. Great deserts! Awesome views overlooking the Sea of Cortez.
Seaside Grill: Very good food at lunch or dinner. You can either order from the menu or they have a small buffett fill with mexican refried beans, chicken, fresh salsa/chips, freshly made civichy and guacamole are the highlights. Try the seabass from the menu. This restaurant overlooks the main pool and has a great view of the ocean as well.
Oceania: Ate here our last night and it so romantic. Too bad I was with my two sons while my wife was eating with my daughter over at the Seaside Grill. It would have been a perfect dinner for a couple that night. A full moon lit up the sky while a cruise ship passed by with it's brilliant lights shining over the ocean. The only lighting was from the full moon and the Tiki lights which made for a most memorable last evening at Dreams. The food here is more upscale in presentation. Very classy with a great setting overlooking the ocean. Try the shrimp dinner. It was wonderful!
Himitsu: Ate here one night and it was pretty good. Not great but good. I had the Sushi and even though I am not an expert on Sushi, I've had better. The atmosphere is very nice. My family liked the fried rice and the beef dish was very good.
Portofino: The evening we were there they must have been understaffed. We had one waiter for all the outside table. There was a waiting list to get in the restaurant due to the slow service.
We waited 15 minutes after being seated to get drinks then another 15 minutes until the waiter came back to take our order.
It was a total of one hour before we were served out main meals.
The food was good with no complaints. This restaurant seems to be a favorite among tripadvisor reviewers. The atmosphere is upscale and very romantic. No views of the ocean here but they have a bonfire every night right outside the restaurant.
Overall, the food is very good and plentiful. If you want to order two meals at once, go for it! We did tip our waiters a few bucks each meal and a couple of bucks at breakfast. Everyone is very pleasant. Just be patient with the service and relax. You will have a much better time if you do. Leave the hussle and bustle back in the states and slow down to Mexican pace which is
sssssslllllllloooooooowwwwwww.
Activities: Do as much as you want or do nothing. My daughter is 9 years old and she loved the kids club. She went in every day for awhile and some days she didn't want to leave. She loved the beach bungy jumping! Take the snorkling tour for $10 from the resort. It's the cheapest best deal around. $10 with transportation for a two hour trip. A REAL DEAL! Look on their website for all the activies.
Beach: Even though you can't swim in the ocean the beach is fantastic! I took a walk on the beach every day in both directions and it is GORGEOUS! Not soft powdery sand. It is more course with pebbles and some shells. Water is beautiful. Walk down to the Hilton (20 minute walk) to swim/snorkel at their beach. There are many chairs on the beach and aroung the pool. Never had a problem getting a lounge chair or hamock.
Pools: The main pool is big. Some days it was cold and other days is was fairly warm. The heater must work off and on. There is a hot tub but no jets. Swim up bars at the pool are a nice touch too.
Transportation: Taxis are expensive going into town. About $25 to Cabo San Lucas and $20 to San Jose Del Cabo each way.
Try the city bus at least once. It's an experience! All the locals use this bus. It's not always the same price so ask when you get on. It's about $1.50 usd each way. Remember to press the button at the back of the bus before your next exit stop. We didn't know to do this and we ended up back at the airport.
Golf: We golf 5 times. 3 times at Cabo Real and 2 times at Cabo Del Sol (one each at Ocean & Desert Course)
All the courses are awesome but none compare to the Ocean Course at Cabo Del Sol. It's ONLY $350 a round!!!!!!! Worth it though to play it just once.
The hotel has a lot to offer everybody. If you like to work out, there is a fitness center. We did not use it but it looked very nice.
We played pool, ping pong, boche ball, horse shoes and beach volleyball. Thee should be plenty of things to do or not do.
Overall impression: AWESOME! Go with the flow. You're in Mexico. Don't let the little things bug you. If you don't expect a Four Seasons Hotel, you will love Dreams Los Cabos.
