My husband and I stayed at Dreams from December 24 to January 1 and we recommend it very highly. We've been to many resorts in Mexico (in Cancun, Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta), but this was our first time in Los Cabos and our first experience at an all-includive. We were a little nervous after reading some of the reviews, but I can honestly report that it was terrific!
When we got to the hotel, we were greeted with warm cloths by the bellman, then given champagne and cookies at check-in. We were there about an hour before check-in time, but we only had to wait about 20 minutes for our room. During that time, we explored a little and enjoyed the magnificent view from the lobby bar out to the pool and beach. It was beautiful!
When we were shown to our room, we were thrilled to be given a magnificent one-bedroom suite with a terrace overlooking the "quiet pool" and the beach. We had booked an upgraded suite because we were belatedly celebrating our anniversary, but we didn't expect it to be so large and beautiful. There was a kitchen/dining area and a full livingroom with couch, chairs, and TV, plus a closet with a safe. The bedroom had a king-size bed, desk and chairs, TV armoire and DVD player, and a huge walk-in closet. The bathroom had a vanity with a double sink and lots of toiletries and a hair dryer. There was a separate toilet and bath/shower area. They had robes and slippers for our use.
We changed quickly and hit the pool, where we lounged, enjoyed shrimp tacos and pina coladas, and swam until sunset. We felt relaxed and spoiled immediately.
We ate dinner at El Patio on our first night and enjoyed a Mexican buffet. The food was good, much better than several of the reports indicated. When we got back to our room, we were pleasantly surprised to see that they had shrewn rose petals throughout the room, ran a bubblebath for us, and put a "Honeymooners" banner across the bed (I guess they didn't have an anniversary banner). It was corny, but a very nice gesture that made us feel special.
Every morning, my husband went down to the pool very early to save lounge chairs. The hotel policy states that this isn't allowed, but we were warned by other guests that if you didn't do it, you wouldn't get a decent spot and perhaps no spot at all (we quickly saw that this was true). We then went to the gym and worked out for 30-45 minutes before going to the breakfast buffet at El Patio. Our favorite parts of the buffet were the omelet station and the smoothie bar. You could get whatever combo you wanted and the people were very nice.
They had lots of activities going on throughout the day. The only one I participated in was water aerobics, which I enjoyed very much. We lounged by the main pool most of the day, then went to the beach in the late afternoon. For lunch, we always ordered by the pool. The menu isn't big, but it's good and the service was excellent. We particuarly enjoyed the cerviche, guacamole, chicken quesadillas, and shrimp tacos. And we ordered pina coladas, margaritas, Diet Cokes and water. Everything was great.
For dinners, we alternated between Portofino and Oceana. Many reports said Portofino was the best, but we liked Oceana better. Portofino had Italian food, which we love, but there was usually a wait to get in and the food was just good, not great. Oceana, on the other hand, had no wait and the seafood was fantastic (especially the scallops and shrimp). We befriended our waiter Rafael and he took great care of us, suggesting special dishes off the menu and giving us lots of advice. We went back several times to sit at his table. He was the best!
We took the hotel shuttle roundtrip to Cabo San Lucas one day and it went smoothly. They charge $6 per person each way (it used to be free), but we felt it was worth it for our first excursion. We did some shopping, took a glass-bottom boat trip to the Arch, and had a late afternoon snack at Senor Sweets by the marina. A couple of days later, we felt adventurous and took the city bus to San Jose del Cabo. It was cheap and easy (just make sure they tell you when to get off). We walked a few blocks from the bus stop to the town square and enjoyed a full day of sightseeing and shopping. We bought some beautiful jewelry, ceramics, and leather duffle bags. We took a taxi back to Dreams in the evening. It was about $20, well worth it when you're tired.
The hotel had a New Year's Eve party, with an elegant set-up of tables and a large buffet overlooking the beach. They had a large screen set up and a live band. We ate, drank champagne, and danced into the new year. It was a lot of fun and a great way to start 2006!
When it came time to check out, we were expecting to be hit with some hidden charges. But it didn't happen! We were only charged for a spa visit, nothing else. We were very pleasantly surprised.
I feel compelled to mention the importance of tipping. Even though this is an all-inclusive where tips are supposed to be included, the staff works hard and they earn very little. We tipped well at every meal and for every service (including the day and night maids). We were shocked to see how many people did not tip at all. Good service deserves to be acknowledged and I'm sure we got extra good service as a result.
In conclusion, we absolutely loved Cabo and Dreams! When I tell friends about our trip, I find myself calling it a "dream vacation" because it was. Don't listen to the nay-sayers -- go to Dreams and have a great time. I hope we can go again next year!
