Our family (husband, me, daughters ages 9 & 5) loved our first visit to Dreams in June so much that we immediately booked a return trip for Thanksgiving, Nov. 21-25. As an early Christmas gift, we invited my brother and his family to join us.
At check in, we mentioned the fact the fact that my brother's stay at Dreams was a gift from us. The front desk manager, Oscar, immediately upgraded my brother's room to a penthouse level. There was also a bottle of champagne waiting in their room - a classy touch, we thought.
We could tell that there must have been a large group at Dreams the week before our visit because the staff, although unfailingly polite, did seem a little worn out when we first arrived. However, by the second day, everyone we encountered was back to normal - professional, spirited and very courteous.
We enjoyed Oceana the best of all the restaurants. The shrimp/scallop ceviche (more like a cocktail) was superb, as was the fish grilled in lime butter sauce. We liked all the restaurants, but had only one negative experience at Portofino (not involving the food) when a diner decided that it would be good form to place a very extended cell phone call in the outdoor patio dining area in the middle of the solo musician's performance. The staff did not seem to know how to address this awkward situation.
Thanksgiving dinner was abundant and extensive, with festive lights and center pieces decorating the buffet tables. We heard some guests complain about the "Mexican flavor" of the some of the traditional dishes, as well as the limited amounts of mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. We did not go to Mexico expecting a traditional thanksgiving dinner, and were pleasantly surprised at the effort that Dreams went to for its guests on this (American) holiday. At the end of dinner, several waiters gathered around our table to make flaming Mexican coffees - a real treat and quite a show!
Our girls loved the kids Explorer's Club even more this visit than last, maybe because there were always a lot of other kids to play with and a new trampoline to jump on. The kids club is open from 9:30 AM - approx 10 PM, with drop in at any time during the day. We particularly appreciated the kids dinner program - at 7 PM, the kids would get taken to a supervised dinner at El Patio restaurant with the Explorer Club staff, followed by a return to the club for a kids movie or other activity. My husband and I actually got to have some real dinner date nights!
We also took a side trip to Todos Santos, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Although we booked with a tour group, we decided to try a restaurant on our own (rather than the one that the tour guide was trying to steer us to). We found the Caffe Todos Santos through the recommendation of one of the local art gallery owners, and enjoyed a fabulous meal (gigantic portions and very creative menu).
We took the bus into town($1, free for kids under 7), and picked up the return bus outside the Puerto Paraiso mall. Very easy.
We brought $100+ for tips, and used them all. Please do consider tipping.
All in all, we absolutely loved Dreams and were sad when it was time to leave. The kind, gentle graciousness of the staff, as well as that of all the other locals we encountered, warmed our hearts and spoke to our collective soul. And now we can't get Cabo or Dreams out of our psyche...
