we LOVED dreams los cabos. the resort was beautiful! we loved the streams, fountains and open air lobby. unless your resort includes airport transfers, i would book before you leave with transcabo. they are reliable and have a website you can book through. I think we paid $50 for 2 of us roundtrip. BIG NOTE....if transcabo is taking you back to the airport at the end of your stay, you're supposed to call them a day or two beforehand to let them know you will still be needing their services. this is written on your confirmation...don't forget.
upon arrival, we were given champagne & chocolate chip cookies. we were upgraded to a suite i was later told went for $800/night. it had a bedroom, pretty big bathroom, walk-in closet, living room & small kitchen w/table & chairs. we were on the first floor yet we could still see the beach & ocean. we brought a good bit of money for tips....we had heard this was a must at dreams. we generally left the maid $2 each day & also left a few bucks at the restaurants after meals. i think we spent about $100 in tips for the 5 nights we were there. all rooms have a minibar and much to our surprise, it was stocked daily!! we were also happy to know that room service was included in the all inclusive deal. (very good club sandwich) note: not everyone at this resort is on the all inclusive plan...so you have to tell your waiters & bartenders your room number. tip: if your package includes a free spa massage or golf or anything...bring the printout from your confirmation or the webpage printout....they do want proof. it didn't seem that they had it on file there.
the food was wonderful!!!! we'd been to all-inclusives in cancun and did not love the food. however, at dreams....we were thrilled with almost every meal. oceania was our favorite....be sure to get their mahi mahi at lunctime...and dinner too. while we love japanese, the japanese restaurant was not our favorite. we did not try portofino. i heard mixed reviews on el patio. the night we went was steak night.....it was very good! you choose your steak & they cook it for you on the grill. we also wanted fish...so they made us some special fish. that was nice. breakfast was also pretty good at el patio. there is a lady who makes smoothies in the mornings from fresh fruit...heard they were good but when we went to get one there were flies all over the fruit so we passed. the poolside service is also very nice. they actually have VERY good cheesburgers & margharita pizza!!! be sure to bring some pants for men & a sundress or something nice for women. almost all the restaurants bring a complimentary appetizer or special drink. we ordered the jalapeno poppers at the poolside restaurant and they were really good. that's the good thing about all-inclusives, order anything you want to try!
one thing we loved about this resort are the fun things to do. the towel station by the main pool has a listing of what is happening every day. plus, the check-in desk can give you a brochure. i especially enjoyed yoga at 4p by the beach and water aerobics at noon in the pool. water aeorbics was really fun....patricia was the instructor and she was hilarious! my husband liked the putting contest each day at 1p. there was a movie night...that particular night is was "ray" but it sounded like it was usually a cartoon kids movie like "incredibles." as for pirate night.....unless you have small kids...SKIP IT! it was really cheesy & dumb. oh, be sure to go to kareyoke night at the beach bar.....we only caught the last bit of it but it was clear EVERYONE was having a blast. get there early so you can get a seat on the swings at the bar. by about 10p each night, the resort had pretty much shut down the partying & activities. of course, on nights you're looking to party, you'll probably be downtown.
the resort has a complimentary bus that will take you back & forth to the city....but you have to book it a day in advance. it's not huge...and it's first come, first serve. we never rode it. it will not take you to the airport. we rode the city bus alot. i think it was about $1 per person each way. the ride to the town of cabo is about 20-25 minutes. the actual bus stop shelters aren't usually there. usually you just stand along the side of the road & wave them down. at dreams, just cross the street & stand on the side of the road. the city buses are orange & blue. just be sure the driver sees you or he'll pass by. most stops don't have an actual bus stop shelter so it's kind of confusing. another strange thing is that you have to tell the driver when he's coming up on your stop...or else he'll go right by it. and when you're heading into town from dreams, the down town stop is just after you make a sharp right hand turn. most of the drive is fairly straight...you turn right & then get off at the next stop. when you are heading into town, be sure to pay attention to which resorts are before yours so you can give the driver a heads up on when to stop. we were counting on landmarks like a hill but it was very dark & you can't see a thing at night on the bus! when you're coming back to dreams from downtown, go to the bus shelter outside of the paradiso mall. by the way, the mall has nice bathrooms if you are downtown and need to go. very clean. another tip, the buses stop at 10p.
as for downtown, there is lots of shopping and bars. the main bars are el squid roe, cabo wabo & giggling marlin. the giggling marlin was way fun!!!! watch for the kids trying to sell you things on the corners...very sad!
one negative, EVERYWHERE you go people will try to give you free stuff or discounts if you'll listen to their timeshare offers. we only listened to one....it was at our hotel....it took exactly as long as they said (i think it was an hour & half) and once you looked them in the eye and said "we're not interested" they got the hint....but you have to be blunt b/c they will keep on reducing the price until it's only a portion of what they originally offered you. you do get a free breakfast out of the deal and also discounts on the excursions. before you go, be sure you know for sure what excursions you're interested in...and i'd suggest doing it the first full day you are there so you can get it out of the way & also so you will be able to book your excursions.
2nd (and only other) negative, due to the fact that the sea of cortez and pacific ocean meet in cabo, the ocean is very tumultuous & dangerous. we couldn't even put feet in the water. my husband got in to his ankles & the little man who worked there came & made him get out! the negative is that you can't get in the water...the positive of this is that as a result, everyone stays around the pool which means that it's very quite & peaceful on the beach. no loud kids, screaming moms or radios. it's just you & the loud ocean. i loved it! every afternoon around 4p, my husband & i would just go sit on the beach & enjoy the sight & sound of the ocean. it was fantastic!
another note: if you happen to need a doctor while you are there, the front desk can send one to your room. it will cost about $90 but it's better than sitting in a mexican hospital on your vacation. they can also bring prescriptions to your room.
excursions: we saved alot of money by booking our deep sea fishing trip at the actual marina rather than at our resort. when you go downtown, you can't miss the marina...it's behind the paradiso mall. just walk along the boardwalk & they'll be people selling trips. note: you can definitely bargain....don't take the first price they offer you. we also did a sunset cruise on a catamaran....very fun!!!!! be sure to sit up front along the netting. free drinks, loud music, fun people...we loved it! skip the ones that include dinner....the dinners on these things are usually really bad!
