My husband and I stayed here the week after 4th of July. Upon arrival, we were very impressed with the lobby view, quick check in, and room quality. We went through the timeshare our friends had, so my husband and I had a deluxe suite which was very clean and upscale (pool/beach view which we later came to regret).
Let me preface by stating we spent our honeymoon in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico at Secrets Capri (sister resort to Dreams). Secrets was hands down the most amazing vacation ever. Fabulous service, treated like royalty, 5 star quality food, gorgeous amenities, great drinks, clientele, no kids... So keep in mind we went into this expecting the same, if not superior food, service, etc.
The first evening (a Monday), we were told that all the restaurants were full, so we ended up eating at the buffet place which was actually okay. It struck me as odd though, b/c none of the other restaurants looked full... it was late, about 9 pm, so I assumed they just didn't want to deal with seating us that late. Maybe not, but that was my impression.
I agree with the poster below regarding the kids. I do realize it's a family friendly place and for the most part, they were relatively well behaved. We don't have kids, so my tolerance level is probably lower than those who do. That only bothered me slightly. The food overall on the stay was subpar. Not even comprable to Secrets. I was disappointed with the burgers and sandwiches at Seaside Grill, although the nachos and shrimp cocktail were good. It definitely wasn't consistent, which was frustrating. Oceana was the best choice. They had great lunch and good dinner. Portofino was our fave restaurant at Secrets Capri in Playa (we ate there 3 nights on our honeymoon), and had amazing italian. I literally almost cried b/c the food at the Dreams Portofino was terrible. Very disappointing since we were are obsessed w/Italian food and were looking forward to it:( Lets just say the place we ate at in downtown Cabo one day (Marina Bistro!!) was by far the best meal I had all week if that says anything. Honestly we got an amazing deal on the all inclusive, so I can't really complain. I am also biased b/c I am comparing it to Secrets. If I had paid more money outside of the timeshare rate (like some people we met on the trip), I would have been quite upset.
The beach and ocean are gorgeous, gym is nice, and the 'spa' pool was quite relaxing with excellent drinks. The issue I had with the poolside room was the noise. There were obnoxious hammered/drugged up 16 and 17 yr olds screaming in the pool, singing, throwing things, etc 4 out of the 6 nights we stayed. The hotel apparently didn't mind b/c no one ever came out the kick them out or tell them to shut the heck up. Slightly irritating and didn't make for a relaxing night's sleep... Keep in mind we are in our late 20's too and like to party, but this was excessive and annoying even to us!
I thought it was really cool they had activities on the resort in the evenings--a stargazing night with a live band, movies on the beach each evening, karaoke, etc. That was all very well orchestrated and great for families.
Overall, we had a good experience other than the food and noise:) We were with great friends and overall had an amazing trip. I think we decided we will try out a new spot, maybe Las Ventanas on our next go round. We really preferred the town of Cabo as a whole versus Playa del Carmen. Just a bit disappointed to see such a significant variance in food, service, etc:( Overall though, it was a relaxing, nice vacation for the price! If you get a great deal, I say go for it!
