First of all, if you are looking for perfection, don't vacation in Mexico. Some of the reviews of this hotel are completely unfair in my opinion. Second of all, if you want to come down to Baja and have a relaxing time, stay at the Melia! We came with a very large and demanding group, and our check in took some time... but hey, you're on vacation, what's the rush? We had an ocean front room which was comfortable and clean dispite the difficulty opening the door. This is not a new hotel, but it was comfortable AND clean enough to overlook the chipped trim, single vanity, and closet doors that didn't work perfectly. We left the maid a five dollar bill our first day and you wouldn't believe how clean our room was, and how stocked they kept our fridge. We were so impressed, we left her another 5 halfway through.
Which brings me to my second piece of advice... bring at least $100 in ones with you and drop them around like you're a millionare. Smile and be friendly with the servers and you will get PHENOMINAL service in return. The breakfast is by far the best meal of the day, and the fresh guacamole is to die for! Order the coconut shrimp at La Teresa... AWESOME. The people who work there put in long hours for very little pay, and when you hand them a few dollars everytime you see them, tell them how much you appreciate what they do for you, you will find that your food tastes better, your glass remains full, and your stay will be nice. Our second night at La Teresa we dined with a very difficult woman, who complained about nearly everything and was very rude to the waiter. I, on the other hand, palmed the gent a five at the beginning of the meal, smiled and was pleasant, apologized for her behavior, and dropped his assistant another two. This lady and I ordered the exact same thing, and her meal came out burned. Coincidence? I don't think so.
JoAnne, the woman who handles the excursions, is very professional and helpful. I would recommend the snorkeling at Santa Maria. UNBELIEVEABLE. Cabo San Lucas is starting to get a little touristy, and eating lunch there is expensive. I would suggest going in the other direction back to San Jose. Cute town with less tourists and more unique shops. Catch the bus at the stop in front of the hotel. Only a buck one way.
The pool was well maintained and clean, and there are all kinds of activites for children. We didn't have our two with us (thanks mom and dad!), but those who did couldn't say enough good things about the staff and activities for younger set.
The liquor is NOT watered down. Be careful of the Margaritas. WOW. You only need a couple of those to keep you going. Modelo and Pacifico are great beers and in large supply. If you need XX or Corona (are you serious?) go into town and buy some and keep it in your fridge. Pleeaaaeeese. If you have teenage children they won't be carded. This is unfortunate, but if you bring them and they want to drink, they'll have no trouble obtaining alcohol. Just be ready to deal with it when it happens.
Overall, we had a pleasant experience at the Melia. Perfect? No. Wonderful? Yep. Enjoy your stay.
