My husband and I just returned from Dreams where we celebrated our honeymoon/anniversary. We picked Dreams largely based on the positive reviews from Trip Advisor. As such, our expectations were very high. I am happy to report that Dreams in Los Cabos not only met but exceeded our high expectations! The following is a break down of our impressions of the resort. I hope it helps you in your decision making process!
The Food:
As has been reported, Dreams features five restaurants; all of them offer a la carte service and some offer really awesome buffets in addition to the menu service. We are foodies and we really thought that the food at Dreams was excellent by resort standards. Admittedly, some dishes were better than others. Some dishes would have been better had they been prepared by a stand alone restaurant. However, overall the food was very satisfying. Dreams does best with breakfast, lunch, and appetizers. Main dishes look very pretty, but are not always great (sometimes they are just fair). Portofino’s main dishes were not the best but the sides were great (tomato, basil and fresh mozzarella salad in a rich olive oil and vinegar dressing was heavenly). The sushi rolls at Himitsu were sub par…but I am extremely picky about sushi. All other food at Himitsu was good. The breakfast and lunch buffets at Sea Grill and El Patio were always perfection. We almost cried when we realized we would not be getting our daily dose of chiliquitas every morning. A con, if you consider it as such, is that coffee is served with condensed milk, not fresh. But you can ask for fresh and it will be brought to you right away. Really, unless you are used to dining at the Four Seasons for every meal, you *might* be disappointed. Though, I can’t stress enough, the food was great to us, a pair of people who appreciate good, quality, fresh food. For the most part, Dreams achieved our food requirements.
The Drinks:
Some bartenders make drinks better and stronger than others. Generally I found the bartenders at the lobby bar to be more experienced in the art of “cocktailology.” The pool bartenders make sufficient drinks, but they are not strong. In addition, the pool bartenders did not seem to know how to make a lemon drop martini (!!!). Instead of a lemon drop, I got sour lime juice and shot of vodka. But the lobby bar makes a mean mojito and chocolate martini! Yum!
The Service/Staff:
I can only ditto what everyone else has said. The service at Dreams is beyond A+. Staff went out of their way to make sure we had a romantic, special, memorable, and fantastic time. They put chocolates on our pillow every night; we got a bottle of champagne on our first night; they learned our names; one night they filled our bed with petals and room with pretty candles; and of course, they were always happy, friendly, nice, and eager to be helpful. Everyone seems to speak English proficiently, though that is by no means a requirement for me as foreign traveler.
The Check In:
Painless. Front desk is very nice and accommodating. The only con is that as soon as you check in, you are whisked away by a staffer to (1) learn about the nature of the resort (cool and helpful!) and (2) sign up for a time share presentation (not cool, waste of time). My husband and I agreed that we would not waste one minute of our stay in Cabo attending a time share presentation despite the good deals that could be had. So it was such a waste of our time to listen to someone explain why we *should* attend such a presentation. True, Dreams offered some good deals (a evening dinner cruise and ½ off horseback riding on the beach), and they promised that it would be only 75 minutes, but we heard from others that the presentation was more like 3 hours. Somehow the Dreams worker convinced us to put a $10 deposit down on the time share presentation, which we did just to get out of there but in retrospect, we should have just refused…our suggestion is just to be firm and say no (unless you find your time in Cabo is worth a 3 hour presentation). All in all, it sort of put a damper on the whole first day. We came to Dreams to be *at* Dreams, not to explore other resorts/time share opportunities (really this is a complaint I have about all of Cabo in general; I abhor the emphasis on time sharing).
The Scene/Ambiance:
Almost everyone present was in a couple. There were a few kids, but not too many. The place is immaculate; they must have people hiding in the shadows just waiting for litter to drop…The place is also quiet. If you want to participate in evening activities (movies, dancing, drinking, karaoke, shows, etc.) you can, but you don’t have too. The resort pretty much dies down at midnight. If you want to party into the wee hours, Dreams is not for you. The pools are fun, but fill up quickly in the morning. Staff tries really hard to get pool people to participate in water games. The entertainment crew is great and so fun and peppy. My husband and I spent one night doing the Dreams “Pub Crawl” with the entertainment team and it was great, great fun. The ocean is not swimmable but it is gorgeous. The resort sets up cabanas, hammocks, and lounge chairs on the beach to hang out in. I didn’t realize what a great beach it was until we spent one day at Medana beach in Cabo proper. Medana beach is a big joke unless you love an endless sea of annoying venders, cruise ships, screaming kids, party kids, construction workers, dangerous boat taxis (they practically ram into the swimmers, and people, people, people! Plus, there is massive amounts of construction on the beach which means (a) you can’t hear the ocean and (2) all you can smell is the gas from the construction equipment. The fact that you could swim in the water did not outweigh all the other crap around us. Stick with the non swimmable beach at Dreams, hop in the infinity pool when you need water, and you won’t be disappointed.
The Room:
Perfect. We stayed in the honeymoon suite, but I think we would have been equally happy in the junior suite. The room had a huge walk in closet, double sinks in bathroom, standard tub, marble floors, two balconies, two TVs, and a beautiful canopy bed, among other amenities. The room is cleaned twice a day! We couldn’t have asked for a nicer room. However, the tub was small (don’t you think a honeymoon suite should feature a tub built for two?) and the shower curtain could have been purchased at the .99 cent store. Our view was good, but I think it could have been better (that is, there are rooms with better views than the one we had).
Bottom Line:
We would totally and happily stay at Dreams in Los Cabos again!!!
