Just to reconfirm, we stayed at Dreams Los Cabos… I have no idea what resort some of these other people are writing about…
My boyfriend (45) and I (38) stayed at Dreams Jan. 20th-27th. This was our 5th all-inclusive vacation experience. We paid about $2500 for both of us, which includes our return flight from Seattle, transfers and an all-inclusive package at Dreams for 1 week.
Check-in
Piece of cake… We were told our very special room would be ready in 30 minutes (not a big deal at all). We quickly finished our front desk chocolate chip cookie and then went to the buffet for a quick lunch. Back to the front desk and our room was ready.
Our Room:
Lovely – We booked a Junior Suite but I guess the hotel upgraded us to a Governor’s Suite… so when the front desk said “very special room”, they weren’t kidding. The suite was very spacious, clean and nicely furnished. We really appreciated having so much living space and the beds are very comfortable – not your typical Mexico bed that is beyond firm.
Room Location – Our room was located on the ground floor, somewhat close to the fire pit and lobby lounge; this area is where guests tended to end up after dinner and onwards. Even though the lobby bar is open until 1am, this is not a resort where people typically stay up super late and party all night. On average, I’d say the noise from this area died down around 11pm. If you are a light sleeper or like to go to be early, I’d suggest earplugs, air conditioning noise, radio or the TV to muffle any noise. It should be noted that any room overlooking the main pool area could probably hear the noise from the fire pit/lobby area. For us, the noise was not disruptive enough for us to give up our “very special room” and move to another part of the resort.
Maid Service
Our maid service was great. We’re not overly messy people but she kept the suite clean, organized and fully stocked. As for theft… we accidentally left the safe open for the entire day and nothing went missing.
Room Service:
24 hours room service… When you call they take your order, confirm your order, tell you how long it’s going to be and how happy they are to serve you! We found room service to be great for lazy breakfasts on the patio.
Breakfast
El Patio Buffet – very good and open until noon! All the other resorts we have been to only serve a full breakfast until 10:30.
-- Omelettes, waffles, baked goods, fresh fruit -- all very good.
Lunch
We ate at El Patio buffet, the Seaside buffet and Oceana. All were fine – for lunch all I really wanted was some quick food like chips, salsa, and guac. I personally really liked the “classic” fish tacos at Oceana – if you like battered and deep fried fish that you can smother with fresh cut salsa… this dish is for you!
Dinner
This is the first all-inclusive where we haven’t had to wake up early in the morning to make a dinner reservation for the specialty restaurants. No reservations required; just show up whenever you want – you may have to wait a bit, but just go for a drink and come back. There are no restrictions as to the number of times you can eat at each restaurant, you can order as much as you want and most are open until 10:30 every night. We found the food at all the restaurants to be very good. Even the food presentation was lovely. We never ate dinner at the buffet; the restaurants were just too good. We ate at each restaurant twice for dinner except for the Italian just once.
Some favourites:
Seaside Grill
Coconut prawns, cream corn soup, lamb, fillet mignon, and best of all cajun grilled mahi tuna!
Oceana
Scallops and prawns were good, however, It is true for this restaurant only, that it seems very difficult for them to keep the food hot. With that said, even with the food somewhat luke warm; it was still good.
Himitsu
All the salads, prawn tempura, and sushi were all good.
Portofino
Caesar salad, calamari, and fish cooked perfectly.
The desserts at all the restaurants are good – cheesecake, chocolate mousse, apple pie…
Gym:
The gym is great! The equipment includes elliptical trainers, treadmills, bikes, nautilus weights, free weight, an exercise ball, floor mats, etc… There are towels, water, TV and music. I used it 4 times and never had to wait for any of the equipment.
Kids Club
We didn’t bring any kids, compared to other resorts there is a full line up of activities scheduled for young kids including a nightly movie in the evening played outdoors on a huge movie screen. One night the screen is used to play Nintendo Wii. There is also popcorn and marshmallow roasting… : )
Complaints
Entertainment – the “shows” start at 8:30 -- this for us is too early. We were usually having dinner at this time. We never really saw any of the shows, but from what I could tell there were really only two shows where staff performed. The other nights included games that involved guests, two just for fun casino nights, and a beach party. They are building a new ballroom so maybe there will be real entertainment every night once this is complete. As for the construction, we never heard any construction noises from our room, the beach or the main pool area.
Places to go:
Take the city bus ($1.50US each way) to Cabo San Lucas, San Jose, and Santa Maria beach.
Note: Be careful crossing the highway! Cars go at least 70miles/hour. We walked up the road a bit over the crest of the gradual hill so that we had a clear view of the traffic coming both ways and crossed half way to the divider, then to the other side.
1. Cabo San Lucas – Across the street from the hotel (there was no actual bus stop on this side of the road), you can flag down a blue or green bus. Cabo is about a 15-minute bus ride into town. Coming home on the bus, we just told the bus driver we wanted to go to Dreams (don’t rely on the driver to necessarily remember, keep your eyes open). If it’s dark… make sure to look on the road for the mile markers. Dreams is around the 18 mile mark so at about 17 miles make your way to the exit – best to go to the front of the bus and tell the driver – Dreams again so he can drop you off in front of the hotel. If you can only get off the bus from the back exit, the buzzer is located on the handles by the doors.
2. San Jose – The bus stop is located just outside the hotel. You don’t need to cross the highway since San Jose is the opposite direction of Cabo San Lucas. You can get dropped off at the Mega Mart and walk into town.
3. Santa Maria beach is about a 5-minute bus ride from the hotel. Watch for the signs. You need to get off the bus in what looks like the middle of nowhere along the highway and carefully cross the street. You should see a bus stop (this one takes you back to Dreams) and a Santa Maria sign once you’ve crossed the street with an arrow pointing right… just past this is a dirt road. Follow the flat dirt road for about 8 minutes to get to the beach. You know you’re at the right place when you see the parking lot and other signs. You can rent snorkelling gear for about $12 at the beach or of course bring your own. There are no public bathrooms…
To sum things up… as far as the food, room, and fitness facility, Dreams has been the best to date. See list below of other resorts we have visited.
