My Husband and I stayed at Dreams this past July. This was our first trip to Los Cabos and we booked this vacation for a romantic getaway. Our relatives who vacation in Cabo yearly advised us not to book an AI as there are many great restaurants in downtown Cabo, however we went against their advice and decided to stay at the Dreams because of its four-five star rating. Although we loved Cabo and will definitely vacation there again, let me just say that it has nothing to do with Dreams. Our experience with the resort, which by the way is definitely not a four star resort, was subpar from the beginning.
CHECK-IN/ROOMS:
Upon checkin we were notified that our Oceanview room, which my husband reserved twice by personally calling the resort both two weeks and one day prior to our arrival, was not available. After explaining to the attendant about our previous requests we were questioned about what we told and by whom, as if we were lying. After my husband provided details of his previous conversations with the manager as to how rooms were assigned/reserved, the checkin attendant agreed that the information we were given was indeed correct but that there weren't any more Oceanview rooms available that day. She told us to check back the next day and perhaps they could change our room then but in the meantime we were escorted to another room which was a junior suite on the first floor. When we got to our room, we quickly noticed how filthy it was. There was mold growing on the mini refrigerator, the microwave door was rusted and the furniture was old and chipped. But the main problem was that the room was right across from the Seaside grill and all we could hear was the sound of glasses, plates, and utensils clanging together. We soon realized that the patio sliding door which looks out to the diners in the restaurant, didn't close so anyone walking by the restaurant could enter our room. We called the front desk and were told again that there weren't any other rooms available but that someone would come by to fix the balcony door/lock. We took our luggage and went back to the reception desk and after speaking with another individual, we were escorted to another room which was not a junior suite but was fairly clean and had a door that locked.
My husband and I decided to forget about the checkin disaster as we reminded ourselves that we were on a vacation. We are not snobby people with extremely high expectations. But having traveled to other three to four star resorts in the Carribbean, Hawaii, and Mexico, we expected the same if not more from the Dreams since it is touted as a four-five star resort.
FOOD:
The food was just horrible and pretty much inedible. We ate at all of the restaurants and they only item that was edible were the french fries. The fish at Oceana had a metallic bitter taste - can you say mercury poisoning? The shrimp cocktail at the Seaside grill was so nasty we still cringe at the thought of it, and the buffet at El patio was crawling with flies. Both times we went, half of the food was gone. One can only presume the flies got to the food first. Portifino was okay but the tiramisu desert we ordered tasted like it was years old. I can honestly say that my husband and I lost weight during our stay at the Dreams. We ended up going out to eat our last two nights in downtown Cabo where the food was excellent. There are so many great restaurants in town that we only regret not eating in town sooner.
SERVICE:
The staff at the resort was not very friendly and it seemed that tips were expected for everything. Even though we did tip during our entire stay there, you could barely get a smile out of the staff. It was as if they just didn't want to be there. We never not Pool side service the entire time we were there (which was five days).
We waited for 30 minutes one time at the Seaside Grill before someone came to take our drink and lunch order. Just not what one would expect from a four star resort.
LOCATION/TRANSPORTATION: The hotel is located pretty far from downtown which is about a 20 minute drive. Taxi's leaving the hotel cost $25 (one way), however when leaving downtown to return to the hotel, we found we could negotiate the fare to $18. There is a bus stand right across the street from the entrance to the Dreams, however when we inquired about it the staff discouraged us from using the bus stating that it is too dangerous to cross the street. We decided to try it anyway and we saw a Dreams staffmember at bus stop. I guess they think Americans are too stupid to cross the road. The bus is $1/pp and takes you right into Downtown Cabo dropping you off at the Mall. We took the bus into town and cabbed it back to the resort as the last bus leaves downtown at 10:30PM.
GROUNDS:
The only thing nice about this resort is its beautiful grounds which are well kept, and the wonderful view of the Sea of Cortez.
Overall, the Dreams was horrible and we would not recommend it to anyone.
