Overall, Dreams is a very nice resort. We were there from 9/16/07 – 9/20/07. There was 5 of us total, me, my husband (who is confined to a wheelchair), my parents, and my 8-year old sister.
Airport/Transportation: We came in from LAX to Cabo via American Airlines - that was a nice short 2-hour flight. At the Cabo Airport, passengers are unloaded via the tarmac, not via a jet bridge. Since my husband is in a wheelchair, they physically carried him down he stairs via the isle chair. He was very uncomfortable with that, as they told us they would have the wheelchair stairs/ramp for him in Cabo and they did not – on the arrival or departure flight. Customs through the Cabo airport was a little slow, but not too bad. The timeshare people really try to convince you that they are there to help you find your transportation, but I just kept saying no thank you and went directly outside. We used Charters Mexico - Transcabo for transportation from the airport to Dreams resort and back. They are a great transportation company. They were waiting right outside the doors in their orange shirts holding a sign with our name on it. It was a nice new wheelchair accessible van and they offered us nice ice-cold bottles of water. The van was plenty big enough to fit all of us and all our luggage. The only downside to the van was the manual portable folding ramp they used to get my husband/wheelchair in and out of the van, as it was not a solid/flat ramp – it was checkered style bars, but the squares were not filled in so he could not independently roll on the ramp – it required two people to assist him by slightly lifting him to avoid his front caster wheels from slipping into the holes/not filled squares. But, I was still impressed that we were able to find a wheelchair accessible van in Mexico.
Check-In and Rooms: When we arrived at Dreams, we were approached by the bellman and given nice cold hand towels. They had ramps for wheelchairs, but it was a little slippery due to the type of paint sprayed on the ramp itself. Check in was nice and easy and we were offered cookies, fruit and a glass of champagne. We arrived around 2:45 PM and our room was ready, but my parent’s room was not until about 3:15. Our room was room 217, a ground floor junior suite with two double beds near the main pool. It was a nice size room with a separate sitting area and nice size porch with two chars and a small side table. It also had a nice sized roll in shower that was perfect for my husband. The room had a refrigerator with soda, water, and beer. The refrigerator was never restocked the entire time we were there. The TV was pretty outdated and the volume goes up and down. The beds were pretty hard. My parent’s room was room 517, a Luxury 1 BR Suite. Their room was very nice with 2 bathrooms, one with a nice tub and the other with a huge shower. It has a separate living room with a coach and TV, a bigger refrigerator and a bar, a microwave, a sink, a kitchen table with four chairs, a bedroom with two double beds and a sitting area with couch. It had a huge balcony that you can enter from the living room and bedroom. Rooms had maid service earlier in the day and turn down service in the evening. Our travel agent noted that we were celebrating our anniversary. They brought fruit and champagne to our room when we arrived. They also decorated our room beautifully on the first night. They put a happy anniversary banner on our room door, put candles on the floor to light up the hallway to the bed, candles on the side table, red rose pedals on the bed with swan towel animals, and had nice romantic music playing as we entered the room w/ the lights all dimmed.
Entertainment: Each night they put flyers in the rooms with the next days activities, dining options, and weather forecast. The first night entertainment was Karaoke, the next night was Monday night football on the big screen on the beach with a BBQ, the third night was the Stargazing Rock n’ Roll Party with a live band with music and dancing on the beach, and our last night was Latin night with a short Latin show with some vending tents and dinner via El Patio. They also had daily activities just about every hour each day. Beach volleyball, water volleyball, ping pong, horse shoes, beach walks, tequila tasting, water aerobics, bungee jumping, nightly live music, etc.
Food/Drinks: Well, this is the only reason I did not mark Dreams with 5-stars. The food really was not that good. The food in the pool area was always good, Oceana was real good and room service was pretty good, but Portofino’s, Himitsu, and the Seaside Grill was just not very good. The El Patio was closed during our stay. Whenever we placed an order and asked for no sauce on a steak or no tomatoes on a sandwich, it always came exactly as the menu described it and never the way we requested it. It seemed like they tried to add things to the food to make it sound or taste fancy, but it really did not go good together. It seemed like they made a good effort to make it different and tasty, but unfortunately it did not. Most of the food taste like frozen, mass produced food all dressed up. The hamburgers and hotdogs from the beachside bar were good, but you pretty much make them yourself. At all the restaurants, they seat you outside (Oceana only has outdoor seating) and you are immediately annoyed by the nasty flies. If you ask to be seated inside at Portofino’s, it’s usually set up for larger parties or tables of two. Portofino’s has a buffet each day, but they set it up outside and there are flies all over the food. We had dinner at Portofino’s one night and we could not eat because of the flies. We noticed it was always hard to get a second cup of coffee at any of the restaurants for some reason. Drinks at any of the bars are served in plastic cups. For us, we had a difficult time enjoying our drinks in older plastic cups. It’s the plastic tumbler type of glasses. It just taste different in plastic and drinks don’t stay cold long in the plastic cups. The lobby bar serves drinks in glasses after 8:00 each night. The drinks are not strong at all. The taste real good, but have very little alcohol. We ever we ordered a mixed drink, we always ordered with an extra shot. We felt like we drank a lot, but never got a nice buzz.
Service/Grounds/Pool: The service was usually pretty amazing. Elsa and Pedro in the pool area were great. Moises and Natividad at the lobby bar were amazing as well. There were always people cleaning, everyone was very friendly and attentive, and always smiling. The resort itself has a very nice layout. The resort was pretty wheelchair accessible and had ramps to all the common areas, pool area, restaurants, etc. The main pool was nice and big. We never used the swim-up bar because it was always pretty busy and the wait staff was very good anyway. There were never enough of the blue pool floaters. People usually held onto them once they got them. They would take them out of the pool, roll them up and stick them under their lounge chairs. It sucked because others could not use them when they did that and went off to each lunch. As usual, people come and put towels and newspapers on the good pool chairs real early. The pool wait staff would try and notice if people were not around and have others use them.
Explorer/Kids Club: We took my lil’ sister to the explorer/kids club, but because of the time of year we were there, it was very slow and she was the only kid in the place. They do have a good program for the kids with pagers for the parents. They have hourly activities and she really enjoyed it that day.
Overall, it was a great vacation. It was still pretty hot that week, 95-98 all week and the humidity was pretty high as well. Dreams did as much as they could to make people feel comfortable. Everyone was always nice and pleasant. I would definitely try another Dreams resort. I would recommend this resort to others, but if you are really into amazing food and wine, you may be a little disappointed.
