My wife and I just returned from the Fiesta Americana Grand Los Cabos for our first anniversary and had a wonderful trip. The hotel is fantastic and the pools and grounds are gorgeous. The staff was hard-working and extremely cordial in all parts of the hotel.
They honored our request for a high floor room (we were in 416, with a nice view of the pools and ocean) and offered us a 10% discount on food and drinks if we signed up for the Fiesta elite membership card (or something) so of course we obliged. Then we were sent across the lobby for the requisite timeshare pitch, which a quick “no thank you” put a stop to for the rest of the week.
The rooms were perfectly fine for our purposes, with high ceilings and roomy-enough balcony. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was gorgeous (I could have fit my whole family in the shower, although that would be gross). Maid service was very good, they forgot towels twice but a quick phone call took care of it.
We ate breakfast at the restaurant each morning and found the food to be very good, albeit pricey (~$30-35 for two with tip each morning). Thankfully they offered an ala carte menu in addition to the buffet, so this saved us a bit of money (and probably a few extra pounds as well). We also ate lunch at the pool each day, half at the restaurant and half poolside. The lunches were also very good overall, but of course not cheap either (~$40 for two with tip). The cobb salad and the burrito were our favorites, but I don’t think you can go wrong with whatever you choose. We ate dinner outside the hotel every night, so no comments there.
The hotel bar is very nice, comfortable with a great view. We had a drink at the bar almost every night before heading into town… nice live guitar and good margaritas (a little too much Grand Marnier for my taste, but it didn’t stop me). Our only complaint was that it was tough to get a drink when it got crowded, both from the waiters and the bartender (there were a few conventions there during the week, generally not optimal conditions for a quiet hotel bar). We also tried the late night fire pit music thing, which was great. Aside from these options nightlife at the hotel was pretty nonexistent, which is just fine for those venturing into town for this purpose.
(Side note - Check the forums for my Cabo restaurant and nightlife reviews. We ate at Mi Casa, The Office, La Dolce, Trailer Park, Da Giorgio’s and Ruth Chris. We drank at Cabo Wabo, Squid Roe, Giggling Marlin, Margaritavilla, Nowhere Bar and Nikki Beach at the Melia. If anyone has any questions about the hotel or Cabo in general please reply here and I will do my best to help out.)
We got a “couples” massage on the beach just before sunset, which, after the $25 coupons we got when we checked in (part of our package I guess) only cost $160 for both of us, including tip. I don’t have much massage experience but my wife tells me the massages we got were the best she’s had for the money.
Activity options during the day at the hotel seemed pretty slim, but we would not have gotten much use out of them anyway, so no complaints here.
In our seven day stay we saw three weddings on site, one being setup on the beach so close to the pool that there was just as big an audience in the pool than there was at the ceremony. Otherwise it is a beautiful spot for a wedding, although I’m sure not a bargain option.
I think our only complaint about the hotel was that large portions of the property were roped off at various times for various conventions. I understand their need to cater to these lucrative customers, but there were a couple days where half the beach was closed off (behind the massage chairs) for the entire day (from 9am forward) because of a 5pm convention party – completely unnecessary, and it made securing a beach palapa nearly impossible.
Unless you are renting a car, bring $$$ for taxis ($20 each way plus tip, for up to 4 people). It was proportionally odd - on the nights when we didn’t do an expensive dinner we spent almost as much on taxis to/from town as we did in town itself.
On our last day we threw caution to the wind and strayed from our eat/pool/eat/drink plan (which we strictly enforced all week) and left the pool early to check out the arch/lovers beach before dinner. We took the 4pm shuttle (don’t pay for both ways unless you plan to use it – I think it cost 100 pesos for both of us one way) and got to the marina around 4:45. Although they had just closed down for the night we convinced one of the glass-bottom boats to bring us out to see the arch (too late for a drop off at Lovers Beach, but at least we got pictures). A very nice trip ($22 plus a good tip – he was a lot of fun), try to find a guide who speaks English as they have some amusing stories and descriptions to share during the ride, and get there early as they close down earlier than we thought.
A few random good and bad Fiesta Americana experiences from the week:
BAD: On Friday I asked the concierge to make us a reservation at Da Giorgio’s for Sunday evening, which he wrote in the reservation book and assured me that it would be taken care of. When we arrived at Da Giorgio’s on Sunday they did not have our reservation on record and they were jammed with two weddings. Thankfully we begged and pleaded and they were able to squeeze us in. Oddly enough we met another couple at the pool the next day that had exactly the same experience with the concierge and Da Giorgio’s the night before. My recommendation – ask the concierge make reservations while you wait and get a confirmation number, just to make sure.
BAD then GOOD: We found an express checkout form on our doorknob when we left the room Friday morning (our third day), and were told that their reservation system showed us checking out after only two nights. We would need to call the travel agent and clear it up. Eventually after ½ hour of verbal sparring they were able to retrieve a copy of a receipt from their basement files with the correct dates, apparently there was a mistake in the entering of the reservation into the computer. On the bright side, they sent a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries up to our room later that day for our troubles. A nice trade-off for an hour of confusion, and a very nice gesture on their part.
GOOD: I made an online reservation at the Office for Thursday night, and upon asking the concierge to confirm I was told they did not have our reservation on file and they were booked for the night. We asked the concierge to call back and look into it (it was my wife’s birthday after all) and Alberto (the chief concierge, I believe) was able to get us in, 7pm as we originally hoped. Props to Alberto.
Overall, I highly recommend Fiesta Americana Los Cabos. Especially at this price point, we could not have done better. Beautiful grounds, great staff, it was perfect for our needs and we had a wonderful time.
