We were extremely pleased with the cliffside location overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The entrance to the hotel and lobby were charming. Our room was not going to be ready for another hour, but we were given the room number. Sure enough, the maid was busy cleaning and we were very happy with the location; room #302 with a great view of the grounds, pool and ocean. Generally, my husband spends the first hour in a hotel negotiating for a better room location or an upgrade. Not a problem, so we decided to check out the nachos and margaritas at the pool bar.

We used AAA travel to book our stay through Apple Vacations which beat Expedia, Travelocity and Orbitz on price. I also feel that we were given such a great room based on the clout that Apple Vacations has. Most hotels want to keep Apple Vacations very happy because of the volumn of business provided to these resorts. Also, Apple has an advocate (representative) for you in case things don't go your way or if you need to make any changes.

The terrace of the Whale Watcher Bar had a great view. On the third day, my husband went exploring. He went all the way to the end of the terrace toward the ocean, turned right and saw stairs just past the other entrance to the bar's interior. At the top of the stairs to the left was a private loft under a thatched roof. It had only 2 tables. He asked the waiter if we could dine there. Yes, we had a private breakfast with a great view as if perched in an eagle's nest. The menu was from the Blue Marlin. We loved it so much that we had dinner there that night and the next night which was our last night. That was such a fun find!

At the marina we had breakfast at Baja Cantina. They served the all time best Chilaquiles. I couldn't make up my mind between green or red sauce, so our waiter agreed to half and half. It was scrumptious.

The 3 pools at the hotel were wonderful as well as picturesque. With breakfast and a great dinner, all that we want mid-day is a snack. The pool bar/grill had a nice variety of yummy local snacks.

The Hotel Finisterra experience was better than our expectations especially after considering some of the reviews. Our room was spacious, clean and cheerful. The balcony was perfect for witnessing a beautiful wedding right below and in front of our room on the tropical grounds. The whole wedding party was from Alberta, Canada and obviously liked the hotel as well.

The Hotel Finisterra is the only hotel that we will return to in Cabo. It is the perfect place for us to stay considering small number of rooms as compared to mega resorts. The close proximity to the marina and other restaurants makes it very desirable. Strolling the long quiet stretch of beach to Land's End really satisfies the soul. Enjoy!!

Just returned from a week at the Finisterra, traded our timeshare.
We did a timeshare presentation at the hotel next door, the Playa Grande {enjoyable, not a horror story} and got $400 credit at the Finisterra for food and drinks. Food was pretty good, we ordered breakfast to our room most mornings. The chicken & cheese enchiladas at the Whale Watchers Bar were very good and the grilled chicken with pasta/pesto at the Blue Marlin were also very good. We did not enjoy the Mexican buffet at the Blue Marlin at all, we should have known better tho. We just are not a big fan of traditional Mexican food, but we were too tired to walk to another restaurant. We did not have good drinks anywhere there {miami vice, strawberry margarita, bloody mary} so we mostly drank beer which was fine with us. Maybe we should have asked for top shelf liquor? Other people around the pool were complaining about the drinks too. Pools were cold so no one was in them, we did enjoy the hot tubs and there were plenty of them. The beach is wonderful and everyone stayed out of the Pacific as the undertow is dangerous. The hotel and pool area were very quiet, slow time of the year I suppose. We had a great one bedroom room {215}, everything was very clean. We really liked the location with just a short distance to the marina. Staff were helpful. We will definately go back to Cabo and to the Finisterra, just maybe in February for warmer weather.

  • Liked — great location, beach with no vendors on it
  • Disliked — poor quality drinks

My husband and I stayed at the Finisterra (Ocean view rooms-Palapa Beach Club) the week between Christmas and New Year’s. We have stayed at this hotel several times before and have enjoyed it because of the food, the friendly staff, the location (close to town but not in town) and the views—but I have to say that this time was it for us -for this hotel and Mexico in general.

The hotel is not new… the linens on the beds are fine and the towels are ample and soft but the rugs on the floors need to be replaced, the couch in our room could have used some sprucing up and a fresh coat of paint would not hurt either. The room looks a bit dated but was otherwise comfortable-let’s remember that you’re in Mexico. The real bummer was that the pools were not heated and so only kids seemed to be swimming on this visit.

So, keeping in mind our geographical location and knowing that most places do not run at the same pace as the US, we were fully prepared to wait for things…whether it be the rental car people getting back from lunch (5 min. = about 20 min.), the server to come and take the order or any other number of things. However, the service in the restaurants was the worst we have ever experienced. On any given day when we went to breakfast on the 7th floor, the waiters had to be flagged down to take an order (they were set up for the buffet but we don’t do buffets and wanted to order a la carte). Forget about getting coffee/cream refills if you used all that was in your thermos at the table. The service at the pool was a bit better and the food tasted great but it always seemed lukewarm and the beverages were not exceptionally good. The Blue Marlin bar for dinner/happy hour was atrocious. The two nights we tried to eat there, we could not get several of the items on the “standard” menu and it took so long to get the drinks we left and went into town. I will give huge kudos to the room service people. The food was delivered promptly, it was the correct temperature, the orders were correct and it tasted great.

There were no problems with the bill, check-in and out was easy and friendly and considering the other properties that we saw on this visit, the Finisterra is comparable to other hotels in its class. Be aware that there is construction going on to the North of the Finisterra and if you want to sleep in past 8am you might want to find another hotel. Also, there is a GIANT hotel that has gone up right to the South of the hotel and it has blocked some of the views.

All-in-all, I was disappointed by the entire experience. I will say that the service issue seemed to be city-wide and not just confined to the Finisterra, but with the prices that you pay for anything in Cabo now (read-it’s not cheap like it used to be) you expect a little more.

My fiance and I stayed at this hotel because our friends were having their wedding here. They raved about what a great hotel this is and we agree! We decided to save a little money and stay in the less expensive rooms but still had a wonderful time. We didn't have an ocean view, but instead had a beautiful view of the marina and the new dolphin aquarium which was fun to watch from above.

The room was very clean when we arrived and the maids would clean it everyday and restock the towels and soap. The only drawback to staying in these less expensive rooms was they only come with two double beds.

The food at the restaurant was delicious and very reasonably priced and on Sunday they have an amazing buffet!!! The food at the pool was delicious, the staff was very friendly and always eager to bring us a fresh bucket of beer or a cold margarita.

The beauty of the hotel was breathtaking. All of our needs were met and I felt I never had to leave the hotel. You can walk down to the beach but can't swim in the ocean due to the drop-off. They have hammocks set up on the sand that were perfect to relaxing or catching a snooze. This was by far one of the best hotels we've stayed in!

I went on this vacation with my girlfriend (Dec. 11-18) intent on giving as objective a view as possible for this site. As well, after reading some other reviews, I was certainly expecting at least a few negatives. I have to say, though, from check-in to check-out, everything went perfectly.

Our room was in the new section (Room 321) and we had a jaw-dropping view of the pool area as well as the Pacific Ocean. Our room had two double beds as well as a kitchenette. It was remarkably large. Every day the maid did a fantastic job in cleaning, particularly when we left some really dirty pots and pans.

The pools are fantastic. Each of the three pools have varying levels of activity, so if you're looking for quiet reading, or some music and a crowd, there's a pool for you. There are activities planned throughout the day (merengue, pool volleyball, etc.) but they weren't too well-attended.

The staff down at the Palapa Hut were very friendly and always had a smile on their faces. Happy Hour (2 for 1 drinks) is from 2-4pm and you don't want to miss that.

The hotel itself is beautiful, physically. We found ourselves walking throughout areas of the hotel simply to take pictures. The addition of Christmas lights throughout the complex made it even more beautiful.

Two things to note: 1) There is construction to the north of the hotel on the beach-a new resort/spa called Capella Cabo will be going in. At first I grimaced thinking it would be disturbing, but the construction noise was hardly noticeable at the pools. However, that may change in the future once the foundation is done and they start working on the structure itself.

2)Once you check in, you'll receive a free drink voucher and some really helpful info near the concierge. Those folks will also ask you if you want to attend a timeshare presentation for Playa Grande (next door to Finisterra). Unlike the timeshare sharks at the airport, though, the lady we dealt with wasn't high-pressure and said she'd leave it up to us. We were never asked again for the remainder of our trip.

If I had one piece of advice for the hotel, it would be to update the two gift shops in the lobby. The merchandise looks outdated and dusty, and there was nothing worth buying, even though it would have been nice to have a hotel souvenir.

This hotel is in a perfect location for Cabo-you are close enough to walk to town via the Marina, yet you also enjoy a nice quiet beach (unlike Medano). I would definitely recommend the Finisterra.
