“Expensive for what it is-but all Cabo hotels and restaurants are.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2010

We were in Cabo 37 years ago the first time and the Finisterra was “The hotel”, sorry to say times have change. The rooms are 1980’s three star. The rooms are very large, but the furniture is just outdated, in good condition but old and plastic cheap chairs in the balcony. Towels are thin and in the old side and the amenities the bare you expect. The food was “gringo” fair; it is like that all over tourist Baja except if you go to the holes in the wall far from the “action”. The hotel was in a secluded quiet location. The hotels in Medano beach were extremely noisy- spring break like, megaphones and beer contests. Because tourism is down, we got a “decent” fair from what they charge and even that I found it was too much. Cabo apart from the remaining natural beauty is just like a US beach town, except that the poverty-rich contrast is more extreme. Unfortunately hotels and condos are covering the entire beach and you can hardly see the ocean from the road any more and no Malecon or walk roads are being built. Cabo is not my kind of town any more. The poor are not getting richer, no social improvements go with the expensive hotels and condos. The should add "depends" on the next question "would you recommend the hotel" if the price was right and depending on expectations.

While I will not stay at this hotel again, there is nothing wrong with it, there are a few highlights, nothing is terrible, but nothing is exceptional. We stayed in one of the the nice "beach club" rooms. This should be rated a 3 star resort.

The good

While you can't swim in the ocean, the beach is nice and relatively secluded, the other main beach in Cabo looks like a nightmare, tons of vendors etc.

The restaurant on the cliff has a great view

The place is clean and while dated, well maintained

The location is very close to down town and the marina if that is important to you, than this is a good thing

As far as resorts go, it's inexpensive

I would say the food it more or less fairly prices for what it is

The pools and hot tubs are just fine

The mediocre

There is nothing outstanding about the rooms, they have everything you need but they are not luxe in any way. The bed spreads are floral polyester, the towels and sheets are thread bare...it's about an 80's Holiday Inn equivalent.

The pool chairs / towels and bar are showing signs of wear, the food at the bar is like a bad American Mexican restaurant, the staff at the bar is .. well a 3 start staff, not impolite, but not great.

Like I said the food is priced fairly, but it's not good, breakfast if just fine though

The concierges and front office staff are 3 star, no bad, just not great

So again, nothing wrong with the place, just nothing great. There were resorts on either side of the hotel that were definite upgrades and we'll likely stay at one of those if we go back.

Also, downtown Cabo is a hole. The cruise ships are dumped off in the marina so there are street vendors, beggars, and effectively American chains on the marina, not a great or relaxing place to hang out. There is some fine dining, but the general vibe is that of a spring break strip.

We had a wonderful seven night stay at the Finisterra between Christmas and New years.
Our Beach Club room was large, clean, well stocked daily, with a gorgeous view of the Pacific. No need to go whale watching. Each morning, between 8-10, we could watch them breach and spout from our balcony.
The quiet beach in front has a steep shore break with strong undertow, fun to watch waves crash. Walking south is the northern edge of Land's End, incredible rock formations to explore.
The large, heated, middle pool with swim up bar rarely had more than a few people in it. No need to waste energy to heat them all. Several spas were also heated.
Breakfast buffet at the Blue Marlin has a great variety of tasty entrees, enough to fill us for the day. One of the best fish sandwiches ever was at the Palapa Bar. They'll also cook your catch of the day.
The marina and busy downtown Cabo is a short 10 minute walk. Take a glass bottom Panga out to the Arch, bargain at $10 each. Just us and our delightful guide through the marina, around the arch, along the Pacific and back. We did it three different times!
The Finisterra is the perfect choice for whatever action you want. Will definitely return!

My wife and I went to Cabo in June of 2007, 2008, and 2009. The first year we stayed at the RIU Palace and loved it, but it has since grown to big for us. We stayed at the FInisterra in 2008 and 2009 (2009 was our honeymoon). I ABSOLUTELY love this place. You can't beat the location. It fronts the Pacific Ocean, which you almost have to yourself - beautiful waves and scenery. The hotel is also a short walk from the marina and all the bars and clubs. We have always received fantastic service here. Food and drink is very reasonable at the FInisterra, too. Try the Finisterra Nachos - YUMMY! The rooms are just OK, but we could care less because we are only there to sleep. I would definitely stay in the Palapa section - great views!

This past trip we took a day trip to Todos Santos (through a tour company - highly suggest doing that). It's a little artist town about 1.5 hours (if I remember right) north of Cabo San Lucas. We had fun doing that. We got to see the Hotel California and the town is really quaint and nice. Other than that, we just relaxed by the beach/pool and sipped on drinks and went into town at night. TOTALLY safe to walk around town at night. We really like Cabo Wabo.

We are going to Aruba this year, since we went to Cabo the last 3 years in a row haha. But, you can bet that I will be back and I will only stay at the Finisterra. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

Staff was uneager to help in any capacity, and most did not speak enough english to assist (or rather did not care). Check in and out took over 20 minutes each time - with nobody in front of us and several people behind desk. No manager was ever available. Worst of all the pool was ice cold and unusable - a heated pool was advertised. Stayed at this hotel about 10 years ago and it was much better then, same rooms no updating. If the pool was usable the other issues might have been more bearable, but when you pay $350 a might knowing you can't swim in the ocean, you want a pool. There are tons of other hotels - including Playa next door, which are more reasonable and newer and cater better to their customers. I would not recommmend this hotel.

This is a nice clean place, the employees are friendly.
The pool area is very nice- great hot tubs- big and many of them. The pool restuarant and bar are pretty decent for a small bite. We spent 2 days lying in the pool area. Right on the beach- can't swim in it but its nice to walk on.
The hotel restaurants are pricey- the breakfast buffet is huge- $16 per person. But you can order off the menu. We ate a quick breakfast here twice as it was easy.
It is a very short walk to the Marina and places like cabo wabo. But about 20-30min to medano beach.
Stay here if you don't mind walking a bit and want good value.
I would stay here again if i got a good deal.

We just returned from a very relaxing 5 day stay at the hotel. We read a lot of reviews prior to booking a trip so there were no surprises with the hotel when we arrived. The hotel is a great value for the price.

Room:
We stayed in the beach club and had a room on the 5th floor. Our room had a balcony that overlooked the pool and had a great view of the Pacific Ocean. The room was spacious, but modest. We spend very little time in our room while on vacation so we are okay as long as the room is clean and functional.

Pool:
As previous reviews have mentioned, only the middle pool is heated which is where the swim-up bar is conveniently located. We chose to lay at the bottom pool to avoid the noise at the heated pool. Whenever we went to the heated pool there was never more than 10 people in it. The service at the pool was exceptional. The staff always made sure you had everything you needed. We made sure to take advantage of the the 2 for 1 happy hour from 2-4.

Beach:
The hotel is located on a beautiful and quiet strip of beach. It was refreshing to walk around without someone trying to sell you a timeshare or a trinket. As noted in other reviews, the ocean is not swimmable from this location. The marina is less than a 10 minute walk from the hotel and you can catch a water taxi to lover's beach or divorce beach for $10 per person round trip. We took a 40 minute tour in the glass bottom water taxi and were able to see the arch, land's end, and the sea lion colony. Our guide brought tortillas with him and threw them into the water to attract the fish. We saw many colorful varieties of fish.

Location:
The hotel is less than a little over a 1/2 mile from the marina in Cabo San Lucas. We walked downtown every night to get dinner/drinks and had no issues. Other night spots like Medano beach are about a 1.5 mile walk or can be accessed by water taxi. We preferred the peacefulness of the hotel beach. Medano beach was very crowded the day we went and we were approached by locals asking us to buy their goods.

Hotel Restaurants:
We enjoyed meals at the pool side bar and the Whale Watcher bar. They offered the basic Mexican food at these locations; enchiladas, quesadillas, and tacos. They also have sandwiches and burgers. We highly recommend the Nachos Finisterra to anyone that wants a great plate of nachos.
