My husband and I (early 30's) stayed at the Finisterra June 19 - 23rd. I had stayed at the Finisterra 5 years ago and found it to be the same, very clean, well maintained and close to town. Every one keeps talking about the "new" rooms and "old" rooms. These "new" rooms are 15 years old and the "old" rooms are 35 years old as told to me by some time share owners. So -- all in all, the place is old whereever you stay. The linens could need some upgrading, but for $85 bucks a night (after discount) this place can not be beat. (booked on Expedia) Happy Hour at the Palapa Bar (pool) is 2 for 1 from 2 -4 and Happy Hour at the Whale Watcher's Bar is from 4 to 6. Drinks are a bit weak, so my husband picked up a pint of rum for $5US near the marina and added some to his rum punch. The rooms are exactly what you expect if you have ever stayed in Mexico before and there is an in room safe for your valuables.
Places to Eat:
Breakfast: Blue Marlin at Finisterra has a nice breakfast buffet, but at $18 bucks a head, quite pricey as is everything in Cabo.
Soloman's Landing is a great breakfast spot as well at the corner of the Marina, breakfast for two will run $20 bucks.
Lunch: Club Sandwich and quesadillas are great by the pool.
Dinner: Get your wallets ready for some damage.
Lorenzillos -- the live lobster place recommended by people at the Finisterra, was wwwayyyyy overpriced, poor service. We shared some ceviche and a lobster tail with non alcoholic drinks for $80US. Do not sit outside, you will freeze to death -- even in June!
Edith's -- I ate here 5 years ago, and it is still a wonderful place. Amazing ceasar salad and lobster. Their "cadillac" margaritas are the best. Dinner with drinks will run $120US, make reservations
Mi Casa -- Great Mexican food, very crowded with wonderful atmosphere and drinks. Dinner for 2 plus drinks ran about $60-80US. Make reservations.
Be sure and take a water taxi out to Lover's Beach and take great pictures of the arch. Waters are rough around Lover's Beach when windy, so be sure you are in pretty good shape to get off (literally jumping) and on a moving boat. Snorkeling is okay -- some fish, no coral. Not worth doing if you don't have your own gear. I recommend also using a dive shorty if you chill easily. Water is about 70 degrees F.
We rented a car from the Finisterra for the day ($50US included everything) and drove up to Todos Santos. A charming art town and home of Hotel California. The Hotel California bar is not to be missed and their tequila is excellent. This is a great day trip if you are tired of sitting by the pool or beach. We had an amazing lunch at Los Adobes -- you will not be disappointed. ($70US)
Airport transfers: I booked Grayline online and they picked us up from the airport in a nice Suburban with one other couple, we were happy with the service until they DID NOT pick us back up to take us to the airport even though arrangements had been made. After waiting 60 minutes, we had to take a cab costing an additional $65US to the airport. Grayline is reimbursing for half the transfers, but at this time is not paying up the extra $65 in cab fare. So -- I would NOT recommend Grayline transportion services.
Neither my husband or I were ever approached by time share people and other than the expected vendors on the road it was your typical Mexican city. Cabo is the perfect mix of true Mexico with Americana, perfect for your vacation. Have a great time!
