My fiancee and I stayed at the Finisterra from June 21-27. We absolutely loved everything about our stay. We will definately go back. We stayed in the new section, the Palapa. Here's a review and rating of each aspect of our stay:

Room and Grounds: 4.5 out of 5.
The room was just your basic room, nothing fancy. We stayed on the 4th floor in Room 404 and had a great view of the ocean and pools. We saw several great sunrises from our room, too. The maids clean the rooms everyday and do a fantastic job. My only gripe was that the light bulbs in the bathroom and vanity area were really dim. But, that's being REALLY nit-picky. Other than that, the room was great. The grounds and pool are very nice. The pool water was really refreshing. The pool could have used a skimming once or twice while we were there, but that's also being nit-picky. The beach is not swimable, but it is absolutely gorgeous to look at.

Service: 10 out of 5.
The service was outstanding. We ate at the Whale Watcher bar and restaurant several nights and mornings and never had bad service. They went above and beyond our expectations - and we tipped them accordingly. We sat at a rickety table one night and our server, without us asking him, came and replaced the table for us. The drink service around the bar was outstanding, too. All of the staff and the conceirge and activities desks were very helpful.

Food and Drink: 5 out of 5.
The food at the Whale Watcher bar was very yummy. I think we ate there 5 times and I only had 1 meal that was below par. Even it wasn't that bad. I had steak one night and it was surprisingly good. Most beef in Mexico isn't that good, so I was surprised. The drinks are great at the pools and the restaurant. You must try the Blue Hawaiian - very good. As far as food prices go, for two people you can expect to spend anywhere from $25-$50 for dinner and $15-$25 for breakfast. Drink prices are not that bad either. A Carona around the pool was $2.50 and they had happy hour (2 for 1) from 2 - 4 PM. Dos Equis were 2 for 1 all day at the pool bar. Happy hour includes mixed drinks, too. We took advantage of that. NOTE: Most of your food and drink bills will already have a 10% tip included. Make sure you check that closely so you don't over tip.

Off Resort: 5 out of 5.
We went to Cabo Wabo 3 times and had a blast, but it is pricey for food. The drinks are yummy, but not that expensive. A margarita will run you $7-$8. We had bills of $100 or more each time went there, but it was worth it because of how much fun we had. Entertainment is awesome there - live music and dance music. We did the Tropicat Jazz and Wine Cruise (which we did last year in Cabo) and it was a blast again. We ate at Peacock's in town. It has great ambiance and the food is really tasty. Dinner there might run you $60-$80.

Overall, our experience was great. At the Finisterra, you are literally within walking distance of the marina and downtown Cabo, which will also save you a fortune in cab fares. The hotel is beautiful and amazing. This was my second trip (in 2 years) to Cabo, so check out my review on the RIU Palace, too, if you are considering an all-inclusive. Since our trip in 2007 to the RIU Palace, they have expanded the resort by 500 rooms. It looks too big right now. I probably wouldn't go back there just for that reason. I would definately go back to the Finisterra. I will add photos of the Finisterra soon. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.

Great Stay at the Hotel Finisterra

We just returned from Cabo, spending a week at the Hotel Finisterra. We had spent a week in Cabo two years ago but stayed at a condo located on the corridor between SJD (San Jose Del Cabo) and CSL (Cabo San Lucas). The Hotel Finisterra was a nice change and a different experience because it is located in CSL and within walking distance of the Marina and many of the restaurants. The proximity to CSL amenities was very nice and allowed a large savings versus the cost of getting a cab from a resort on the corridor (shuttles weren't an option either due to the Taxi-Shuttle driver dispute that was going on when we arrived, forcing most transportation by the very pricey taxi services).

The Hotel staff was very helpful and the food was very good (we were pleasantly surprised, especially with the room service). Unlike the corridor resort we stayed at two years ago (Club Regina/Westin), the food was very moderately priced (seemed to be roughly one-half to two-thirds the typical cost at the Westin for comparable food quality). The room (Palapa - Beach Club) was very nice and spacious enough (actually larger than a standard room at the Sheraton that some relatives were staying at -- but which is probably about twice the cost). To summarize, the room was much better than we expected for the money we paid.

A minor complaint would be the lack of a fridge or microwave but I certainly understand that by charging a lower rate for the room they are probably hoping to offset with minibar/room service/restaurant usage by the guests. We worked around this to a certain extent by making a single stop at Wal-Mart (a quick drive) to stock up on some non-perishable grocery options and used a portable cooler we had packed away for the drinks.

Rating the hotel strictly on its merits (not on whether Cabo is a good spring break destination or not), my wife and I were very pleased with our stay.

As any visitor to Cabo will tell you, do your best to avoid the timeshare hawkers who are everywhere (including the Finisterra) - also pre-arrange (on the internet) your shuttle transportation from the airport and leave the airport immediately (don't believe anything you hear on the way out). If you do plan on spending a morning at a presentation though (free breakfast and money), make sure you hold out longer and get more money for sitting through the torturous process and be prepared with a good story for why you are saying NO (also plan on saying NO many times).

As a senior attorney in his early 30's who missed out on the Spring Break experience while in college, I jumped at the chance to join my friends in Cabo when my friend at Columbia called me out of the blue one day in late February. After seeing Cabo as depicted in the film "The Heartbreak Kid", I jumped at at a chance to join in on the fun.

First off, Cabo is NOT a Spring Break destination. If you want to meet barely clad and approachable college girls in Mexico, go to Cancun or Acapulco. What it is, however, is a tourist trap for families who spend like they are still in California, and therefore think everything is cheap by comparison. Consequently, even the Spring Breakers there are the OC set (or whatever the equivalent is across the other States). And make no mistake, you pay Southern California prices in Cabo.

Which brings us to the Hotel Finisterra. While the amenities and location are adequate, what was most offputting about our stay was the disgusting attitude of the entire hotel staff. As several other bloggers have pointed out, the hotel imposes a curfew on its guests. My friend and I found out the hard way after we tried to invite several friends to hang out in our suite one time at 2:00am in the morning. The hotel automatically imposed a US$60 surcharge on our room, and claimed the terms and conditions of the hotel could not be challenged, and no one from front office or sales management would meet with us despite our vociferous complaints.

While initially promising to knock US$30 after our initial round of discussions with one of the front office people, Jorge, we later received through voicemail from the hotel Assistant General Manager, Sandra Meza, that the hotel was reneging on this agreement. We sought to protest this on checking out, but unsurprisingly perhaps, no on in authority at the hotel was on duty that day.

We subsequently escalated our complaint to the founders of the hotel, but received no reply whatsoever. Considering the owner and his family are so proud of their hotel that they live on the property, it is atrocious that they refuse to entertain any complaints from dissatisfied guests. Let's face it, the yardstick of any good hotel is the service extended to guests by its staff, failing which any pleasant experience and memories will invariably be marred by the exceedingly poor manner in which they were treated.

I would not visit this hotel again even if held at gunpoint, and I would urge anyone who does wish to have his visit to Cabo permanently spoiled to stay far away from this hotel.

When I looked into the reviews of this hotel, I found them confusing. Most were positive, but a few were less than favorable. Well, here is the straight truth. I have traveled to 26 countries and have stayed in flee bags as well as 5 star hotels. So, I know something about hotels. The Finisterra has good and bad features. However, I feel that the good points far outweigh the bad points. The grounds and facilities are outsanding. The pool and common areas are beautiful and the food is very good. Service is adequate. The location and view are great, with views of the Pacific Ocean, Sea of Cortez, and the Marina. The one thing that the discerning traveler might not appreciate is the room. While the view was fantastic and the room was clean, however, it is very "dated." The rooms have definitely not been updated in a while. If you are looking for stylish decorating and posh surroundings, you will find this hotel disapointing. Also, if you want to swim in the ocean or body surf, you should look elsewhere as this property fronts the Pacific and swimming is prohibited (not to mention dangerous).

This is a great hotel! We stayed from May 28-June 4 and had a great time! The service is great and staff is very nice. Besides one waiter at the pool kinda rude, but hey we didnt care we are on vacation! It is a very short walk from the marina and shops. This was my first time in mexico and Cabo is VERY clean for mexico. The place that we loved to eat at for the price was No Worries. Cheap food and a great time. My advice though is take the free shuttle up and down the hill makes it easier! If you have any questions about the hotel or cabo before you go feel free to message me I had to ask a couple questions before we went. We will be posting pictures of the hotel as soon as we get back home!
