We stayed at the Finisterra from 12-26 to 1-2-08. All of the reports about hustlers at the airport are true! They are pretty slick. If you don't want to be hustled, or aren't interested in buying anything, GO OUTSIDE the airport building at once, and don't stop for anyone!. Once you are outside, you can look for your transportation. All legitimate transporatation services will NOT be in the terminal. Some of these time share guys have booths set up in the terminal and look pretty professional. They will ask what travel agency you are with, and direct you right into a timeshare presentation. Go directly outside the terminal!
The Finisterra is a nice hotel. We stayed at the Palapa Beach Club section, which I would recommend. The rooms are just starting to get a bit dated, but are good sized, clean, and everything worked. The air conditioner will only work when your balcony door is closed by the way. An energy saver. Our room(s) were 311 and 312. The views were decent. The Playa Grande, which is a huge resort next door, robs the Finnie of about 20-25% of it's beach views. It's a monster. Also I would recommend staying in a 4th thru 7th floor room. Some of the 3rd and lower floor rooms will result in a Coconut tree being stuck in your face, (rooms 309 thru 300). Actually, I would request a room closer to the Playa Grande side. The way the section is angled, you will get a good view, and you will be away from the construction on the other side of the hotel. You will still hear the construction from the pool area, but it isn't too bad. I am guessing that it will be all done by June 2008.
The pool area is awesome! The top pool is unheated. If you like a deep end, there is none. All pools max out at about 4 feet. There are some decent kids areas,a and nice hot tubs. The swim-up bar pool is nice, but be aware that young kids love it. Hey, when you were a kid, could you stay away from a swim-up bar?
The Blue Marlin restaurant is excellent, with a nice dinner menu, and a decent breakfast buffet. Not cheap, but in line with Cabo prices. The Palapa Bar restaurant is okay for a sandwich. The Whale Watcher Bar is very nice, but a tad expensive. Two Coronas' and 4 shots of Patron was $67 USD before the tip. If you go for happy hour 2 for 1 it won't apply to the shots. Sip those drinks and go downtown for better deals!
Downtown Cabo San Lucas is fine if a 1970's border-town-type environment is what you like. Some love the "funkiness". Some say it's a slummy toilet. Depends on your taste. If you're there, just get into it and enjoy it. It will be a nice experience if you are in the right frame of mind. Pancho's restaurant (make a reservation), Galeon, were nice. Get a good deal on Lobsters at the Crazy Lobster. Had terrible service at Ruth's Chris Steak House, which was a surprise. Once in awhile in Cabo we would get the "feeling" that someone didn't particularly like Norte Americanos. Most people were friendly, though.
The Finnie is clean, modern, and the location is perfect. Literally 5-10 minutes walk from the Marina, (There is a Marina area entrance next to the Cabo Dolphins building that goes unnoticed. It just says, "entrance"), 10-15 minutes from downtown but still "away from it all". The Playa Solmar (beach) is being built upon (too much), but will always be quieter than Medano Beach, if that's what you are looking for. There were no hassles at check out, the bill amount was correct. The staff is very helpful.
At the bottom of the hill from the hotel, which isn't a bad walk, (there is a free shuttle), there is a sales guy at a booth. He is ready to sell you anything. They should lose the sales guy. He is kind of high pressure and makes the Finisterra look a little tacky. Ignore him if you don't want to buy. After the second or third time down the hill, he will ignore you. Have fun!
