This was our second stay at Palmas, we're headed back 04/06 for our third. We absolutely love Palmas, it is such an easy family vacation. My husband loves to fish while the kids (4 months and two years) and I play at the pool, the beach, stroll around town, or nap in the room.
The rooms for the most part are great. There are several different styles; the cabanas are older and basic with a thatched roof and hammock out front and no tv (our favorite rooms), there are oceanfront rooms that are a little more hotel-like and smaller with tv's, and beautiful two bedroom condos with a full kitchen, living roon, tv, etc. All rooms have refrigerators. The only bad room we ever came across was when one member of our party was put in a room just above the kitchen - very loud in the early morning hours!
The food is basic. No, it's not great but it is always good and I have found that they will almost always special order something for you if you're really unhappy or if you have picky kids (a cheese quesadilla is always an option). The seafood and mexican feasts are fun and they have been in the process of upgrading their outdoor eating area. There are good restaurants in town and a great taco shop just outside the hotel gates if you're looking for a change. There's also a well-stocked grocery store in town.
There are two bars, one outdoor and one indoor. The outdoor bar is swim-up although I've never actually seen anyone use that option. We loved the outdoor bar, beautiful setting looking over the water and the infinity pool.
Fishing is the primary focus for sure. I find that the beach loses just a bit of scenic beauty as a result of all of the fishing boats moored there but it's okay. My husband and his friends have had good and bad experiences with the fishing. It seems that the crews really vary in terms of experience and attitude. I guess the best thing might be to see if you can talk to people (or find reviews) that specify good crews. This last trip the guys liked the "Fresh Catch" with Louis. Our group ended up, after giving half a marlin to the captain, coming home with over 160 pounds of fish.
The staff is amazing. Super-friendly and willing to help, we've really enjoyed them and have been able to develop some personal relationships which is fun. I think my favorite thing though is just how easy it is with the kids. The kiddie pool is centrally located, there is a big enclosure full of birds that is always entertaining, a very small and basic playground, and of course the beach. The beach is fairly grainy, not very good for sand castles and a little rough on the feet so be prepared. It is great never having to worry about preparing a meal and everything is close together (except the condos, they're at the end) so it's easy to get around even if you're hauling kids.
About my only complaint is that I wish the pools were warmer, especially the kids pool. Even the "hot" tub is just lukewarm.
All in all it's a great basic place, don't expect high-end, and so easy with kids.

I have been going to Palmas for over 20 years. Bob and Cha Cha had a good operation. Now they are retired and their sons are out for the BIG bucks. Notice the 2 good reviews were 2 and 3 years old. This hotel has grown physically and the services have not. There is construction going on until 9 PM some nites. I questioned the front desk about all the noise and dust just 15 feet from our room and the response was we need to get this project done for high season. We were there the last week of March, not the high season. There is no security for partys that are next to your front door at 3AM. The food is so so. Hasn't changed much in 20 years. Most people pay twice for dinner, once at the hotel and again in town. The fishing is good at times. The boats are maintained when they break. Booking can be a problem. One day we had no water and other parts of our lunch missing. Don't let the hotel process your catch, have the smoke house in town do it. They do an Excellent job, and their rep is on the dock. I'm going elsewhere from now on. We need to remember this is Mexico, not Costa Rica.

Sorry that it took three years to write my review. We WERE at Hotel Cortez during "Marty." I was with a group of 12 from Memphis, Tennessee. The night before "Marty" blew in six of our group headed north to try to fly out. No luck, they ended up in their hotel with no water, food, air or booze and four days before they could go home.
Hurricane Marty blew in with much gusto......scared us no end. The hotel staff was up with us at 6:00 and all hands were at work until ten at night. All guests worked just like the hired help (or most of us did.) Even with a category two hurricane having crossed right over us, we had breakfast at ten and lunch at two. Get this: We had air in the rooms at 7:00 that night! Even with the front doors blown out. The staff at the hotel did everything they could to be accomadating. Over all, I would give the entire situation and hotel a seven to an eight. And we will go back again, just not right now.

We had a wonderful time after a shaky start. Our rooms weren't ready but they quickly upgraded us to a Condo with two suites. My husband and our dauthers family, there was 8 of us. were very impressed with the accomodations. They fished two days. The boat was good the rental gear was not really up to par but they managed. We chose to rent gear, didn't want to carry ours.

This is indeed a "Fisherman" paradise. The place comes alive when they come in from their fishing. During the day, it's sleepy and swimming and relaxing for the ladies and kids is it. The food was average and poor at lunch time. The soups were excellent and their Mexican Fista dinner makes up for all the other "ok" meals.

The staff was very accomodating and they try really hard to please. I think that the young ladies at the check in counter need to learn to communicate better, show more interest, and be more knowledgeable. All in all we had a good time and will return again.

I just got back last night (09-12-05) from Hotel Palmas deCortez. We booked our 3rd annual fishing trip to your hotel, 36 guys, big booking and a great time. Your hotel is awesome BUT we will not be returning next year. We met Kathy your wedding planner at a little taco shop up the street and after talking with her, she suggested I write you about our stay to help you make it better for others, she also said she was meeting with Chuck Monday morning and would tell him.

Our party was the keas party, the two years previous the food has always been great, This year very few of us would even eat there! I sorry to say the food was awful, although this worked well for the restaurants in town, as we met many guests that had all there meals in town because the food was so bad at the Cortez.

I fished 3 days with my dad and my son.
Day 1 we were aboard the Champagne with Captain Danny his mate, The man was rude and never even tried to catch fish and was more interested in getting back by 2 0 clock than any thing. well the motor broke and we could not fish the Champagne the next day (good) Maybe he was just having a bad day!
Day 2 We were aboard the Alma Rosa II with captain Tony, what a pleasure This man worked his but off for us absolutely the greatest guy every and his crewman was just as good, we did not catch a fish that day but hey that is fishing the Captain made it the best day of our whole trip. But The boat broke down and we had to be towed back, oh well stuff happens! still a good day
Day 3 we were aboard Dela Regina with captain Israel and crewman Gabriel, These two guys should never be on a boat. I have been fishing the east cape for 12 years and They were the worst fisherman I have ever seen! We had to tie our own hooks show them how to hook live baits properly, man I could go on and on, after the first hour I don't think either the captain our Gabriel even came down to the deck. These guys were so bad when we got back to the dock (hotel) My dad got off Dela Regina walked over to the boat next to us and gave the $120 tip to the crewman on that boat, Right in front of Gabriel and Captain Israel, just so they knew we weren't happy.

On the bus ride back to the airport, you had 11 guys that were happy with things but 25 that will never be back until things change.
This year we had 36 guys, and next year Im sure 40+ We will be booking with Rancho Leonero, I know running a large company is difficult and if you do not know there is a problem you can't fix it. I hope this helps you make a better hotel.
