I agree with many of the reviewers here that the Playa Grande Resort is a very attractive property. There are a variety of beautiful pools (about 5), only two of the smaller ones which were heated when a bigger one should have been in December. Everything appears to be new, the rooms are nicely appointed and very clean, and there are attractive common areas. Alot of people have commented on the beds, which I thought weren't too hard. We do have a harder bed at home though so maybe that is why this didn't stick out. I thought the hotel's bathrooms were nice, except for the massive climb in and out of the shower/tub. Anyone else notice this?
Let me start off by saying I am not some pampered individual that has to stay at 4 and 5 star hotels. I have been traveling to almost 50 countries in some of the best and worst locations. Heck, I stay at Motel 6's all the time and have no issues. I am not a stickler for impeccable customer service.
However...
The service was really bad, especially with the front desk. Upon arrival, we were told numerous things that weren't true. (There was no language barrier here...my wife and I are both fluent Spanish speakers.) In fact, it got to be a comedy. We knew to go with the opposite of the information we were given because we knew it was always wrong.
The front desk offered us a free meal at local restaurant. When we came back to get the passes, we were told it was 2 for 1. We would ask for directions, and no one could tell us where basic things were. We were told mini golf was $6, then $12, then $6 again. They tried to charge me $60 for a crib we had requested ahead of time (no mention of the charge at time of request), even though we paid almost $350/night (alot of money!!!) during Xmas week to stay here. I wound up arguing for 25 mins at check out and the charge was removed by the manager, not the front desk. Frequently, we heard "this is a time share, so we aren't able to accommodate your request". OK, make up your mind, are you a hotel or a time share, because you charged us like a hotel would for things.
One of the worst things was when I gave the security guard/valet the keys to our rental car. We walked away and we could hear the tires of the car squealing and saw the lights of the car disappear very quickly. The valet was flooring it around the circle and down the driveway and we were the only people there so it was not like he should have been in a hurry to get back.
The food at the hotel was not bad. Pool bar food was decent and OK priced.
This was my first trip to Cabo and I wouldn't recommend it. We have been to Huatulco (the best), Cancun, Cozumel, Merida, Mexico City, Veracruz, and Puerto Vallarta. Cabo was way overpriced, smoggy, and the service everywhere was pretty much the same...not good. We were charged $14 to drive 6 blocks in a van taxi with another family. You couldn't get away with paying less than $13 for a hamburger for the kids at a local restaurant. Two restaurant exceptions were Mariscos Vallarta and La Casa Country where the food was very good.
The way Mexican tourism works is each president picks an area to concentrate tourism resources and infrastructure. Under Salinas, it was Puerto Vallarta, under Zedillo, it was Cancun and the Riviera Maya, and under Fox, it was Cabo. Cabo is just the latest in a series of Mexican tourism scams. Hotels charge top rates and food is expensive, even for us, being from California. Meanwhile, most Mexican resort and restaurant workers in Cabo make $10/day in salary, tops. I have no clue how they survive.
We won't be going to Cabo ever again. I would recommend spending your money elsewhere in Mexico, especially Huatulco, which is just a really beautiful area with good tourism infrastructure set up.
