My husband I went to Cabo San Lucas and stayed at PLAYA GRANDE June 3–7, 2004 and we had a wonderful time! The photos on the web do not do this resort justice (I’m going to post ours on Webshots.com). The entire resort is beautiful and spotlessly clean, including the rooms. We had a Deluxe Junior Suite with a view of the pools, beach and turquoise waves (beautiful though you can’t swim there due to the very strong currents). The room was large and spacious. There was a king size bed and a sofa that could be folded out. The bathroom was covered in marble and the tub was huge. We had a small kitchen area stocked with all kinds of utensils and appliances, but we only used the refrigerator (for our cervezas!). We spent a couple evenings sitting out on our balcony listening to the Pacific.
The pools at PLAYA GRANDE are amazing! If memory serves, there are five separate pools that start with a huge heated Jacuzzi then down a few steps is a good size pool with an island in the middle. This pool has a waterfall down into the next pool that is sort of split in two – half only about a foot deep and the rest about 5-6 feet deep. Cross a walkway and you’re in the biggest pool with built-in sun bathing chairs, a swim up bar, and a water-volleyball net. Down even further, closest to the beach, is another large Jacuzzi and another pool (we found that this area was usually occupied by older folks wanting a more quiet area). There are staff on hand at all times for drinks and food that you can order right from your lounge-chair. In the last few months PLAYA GRANDE has replaced all the outdoor furniture with very nice wood tables, chairs and lounge-chairs with comfy cushions. The whole pool area is absolutely beautiful!
The staff at PLAYA GRANDE are very friendly and accommodating. They helped us out a lot since this was our 1st trip to Cabo. The restaurants, bars and endless shopping in downtown Cabo is an easy 15 minute walk from PLAYA GRANDE. One thing to keep in mind, there is no ATM machine at PLAYA GRANDE, so be sure to get enough cash in town. The resort takes credit and ATM cards at the bars and restaurants (or you can charge to your room), but if you’re going to book activities, shuttles or taxis, you’ll need cash on hand.
We were warned that the resorts in Cabo are famous for their time-share meetings that can last hours. I don’t know about you, but I have much better things to do on vacation than sit and listen to someone trying to sell me something that I know I’m not going to buy. But when we arrived at PLAYA GRANDE the staff assured us that the meeting would only take about an hour, we’d get free breakfast and lots of discounts on the many activities that Cabo offers – fishing, ATV’s, snorkeling, wave runners, parasailing, etc. The salesman that we had was a very cool Canadian that has lived in Cabo for three years. He was very understanding when I politely but bluntly said we weren’t going to buy anything. We chatted over breakfast, he took us on a short tour of PLAYA GRANDE then we were off to the activities desk to book some fun stuff with big discounts. We went on a three hour ATV tour, which we highly recommend. You get to ride through the desert then right down on to the beach! It was beautiful and tons of fun, but be sure to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty! Then we did a half day fishing boat. The boats normally hold four guests, so they put us with another couple, which was fun. They were a blast and he even caught a marlin! We caught a couple of tuna and that night we took one to a restaurant, The Shrimp Factory, and they cooked it four different ways for us! Talk about fresh fish!
The food in Cabo is wonderful! We ate at El Coral where the owner and his gigantic teddy bear (rottweiler), Oscar, filled us with fish tacos and plenty of cervezas! We dined on fine Italian food at Galeon, overlooking the marina at night – beautiful! But I think my favorite place is The Office. It’s a little far to walk from PLAYA GRANDE, but if we can do it, so can you! It’s over on Medano Beach (where you can swim in the ocean) and if you’re looking for great Mexican food and a great setting, this is the place to go. The tables are set up right in the sand and we had dinner about five feet from the water with nothing but a hurricane lantern to light our table – very nice. Toss your shoes off and get ready for a bucket of cervezas or a potent margarita! There are plenty of street vendors on the beach, so bring some cash or be prepared to smile and repeat “No, gracias” every two minutes. We went back to The Office for our last breakfast before we had to come home. Nothing beats their shrimp omelet.
The major construction of PLAYA GRANDE is complete and the breathtaking new lobby just opened a couple months ago. But they aren’t quite finished with beautifying the entire grounds. They are adding a lake, a reflecting pool and another waterfall, so there is some noise during the day, but I assure you, it is minimal. We asked at the front desk and they said the entire resort will be completely finished in October. So if you do go before then, expect a little noise, but don’t let it ruin your vacation! Just look around you, you’re in such a beautiful place!
We loved PLAYA GRANDE and did not want to leave. We will definitely return!
