We visited this resort from November 15-22, 2008. Let me start by saying that we were there as guests of friends that have a timeshare which is a Presidential Suite, so we were spoiled from the very moment we got there! However, I'll get back to that!
We arranged a private shuttle from the airport through Arturo at Translobo (thanks to the advice of folk responding to a question that I posted here!). The driver was a little late but he turned up in the end so we were happy! Our driver stopped for us at the Mega store on the way to resort and we were able to pick up a bunch of groceries and supplies. When we got to the resort, our luggage and our groceries were unloaded from the shuttle and were transported to our room after we'd checked in - fabulous, we didn't have to do a thing!
Check-in was easy and apart from the timeshare person pushing us to make an appointment for the next day, the experience was a good one. We eventually said we'd take the timeshare tour in two days but actually forgot about it. They called a few times asking us to reschedule but we basically ignored it and did our own thing. I know others have commented on the timeshare folk being more insistent but thankfully that wasn't our experience.
We then took the golf cart down to our room. I was travelling with 3 children (7, 5, 2) my mom and my husband. The kids thought it was great! We gave a tip to the driver but quite honestly I was surprised throughout my stay at the number of folk that didn't ever tip them. The drivers never gave the impression that they were expecting a tip and were always very gracious when they got one. There was certainly no pressure to tip them but they were always so friendly and good with the kids that I felt I wanted to give them something. It's a big, steep resort and while it may have been nice once in a while to walk to wherever we needed to go, we were on vacation, it was a novelty and good fun! If we felt the need to walk, we just headed out to the beach.
Then we got to our room. We were in building 2 on the second floor and boy were we spoiled! The Presidential Suite is about 2000+ square feet and ours overlooked the main pool with the ocean to our right. Absolutely stunning. As we entered our room, we noticed the pink flamingo's outside! It was clean and well maintained and had plenty of space for us all. We never once felt crowded in there. Like other folk we had our share of tiny ants but I guess you're never going to stop nature in warm places so we just used the bug spray under the sink (they obviously know it's a problem) and kept as much food as possible in the fridge - it seemed to be safer in there! Our maid did a great job every day and we left her a tip each day. She left animal shaped towels each day which the kids loved and would even deliver fresh towels in the evening as there were 6 of us and she wanted to make sure we had enough. How's that for service! We had a short walk across to the small deli, the Manila Bar and La Nao restaurant.
We noticed on our first day that the pool loungers and cabanas fill up early - folk are there around 7:15-7:30 in the morning securing their spots. We headed out around 9:30 on our first day and went to the main pool but there were no seats/loungers at all. We knew there were other pools so we just headed up to the kids pool and it couldn't have worked out better. The atmosphere was a little more relaxed than the main pool, the bar played music and more importantly there were loungers available! Eventually folk left and we were able to move to a cabana which seemed to work that way every day we were up there. My only comment would be that I wish they had more cabana's - there didn't seem to be enough for the number of folk there. However, if that's my only comment, then I think we did ok! The pool staff were very friendly and we ate lunch there most days. The food was always good and resonably priced. The kids had grilled cheese sandwiches a couple of times and it was something ridiculous like $2.50 and that also included fries! I really don't have anything but good things to say about the kids pool - we liked it so much we never tried to go back to main pool during the day! We'd go to the main pool for a swim at night and then in to the hot tub. How lovely it was to sit in the hot tub and listen to the ocean. I'd love to see some more lighting around the hot tub area at night - it's a bit of a danger to go down there without night goggles, but thankfully no casualties were incurred!
Restaurants - we tried some, and we tried room service! I actually think the room service was better than the service in the Bistro itself! The attendant came in with our food, laid our table and really took pride in what he was delivering. It was a pleasure to watch! We went another night to the Bistro and while the food was okay, the service was horrible. Our kids asked for soup and then a sandwich. The sandwich came and after another 20 minutes, their soups came. All the while, none of the adults food arrived. About 15 minutes after the kids soup arrived, our food arrived. It was nice food but the fact that we'd not been able to eat together and had to wait so long for it detracted from the overall experience. The kids were ready to leave before we'd even started! If you've ever had young kids ready to leave and you've made them wait until you're ready (never mind try to eat your meal while they're waiting) then you know just what I'm talking about!!!
We did go to La Nao one night for the Italian Buffet. It was a pretty nice selection of food and you could choose your own pasta and sauce for your second course. Overall not bad value for money and the food was good.
I also took some time out and went to the spa. One word - amazing! I had a few treatments and they were all absolutely fabulous. I felt completely relaxed and refreshed when I left. I think it's only slightly more expensive than what I'd pay at a spa locally, but I live in No. California so that might not be a good gauge!!! In my opinion it was money well spent and I totally felt pampered. Lovely!
One day we took the free shuttle over to the Rose resort. It was nice but I don't think it compared to Sunset Beach. I know they say you can swim in the sea there but it was still very strong waves and I watched a lot of folk getting tossed around in there! We only stayed for a little while and then headed back.
When we left (which nobody wanted to do!) we called ahead for the golf cart and they came and picked up our luggage. We didn't want to leave the room too early as our flight wasn't until the afternoon so they let us hang around past check out time and then came back to get us. They helped us arrange a private taxi back to the airport which for 6 of us was only slightly dearer than a shared shuttle. The service at the end of our stay was as good as the service at the beginning.
In case you hadn't already guessed it, I can't say enough good things about this resort. It's been a while since we've been able to get away as a family and this was just what the doctor ordered! I fell in love with the resort, it's proximity to the ocean, our room location.......everything! I am so totally spoiled now that I'm worried that we'll never be able to have another vacation that equals it! Our friends are using the timeshare themselves next year so I'm already looking to see if I can find another Presidential Suite for us to rent - yep, we liked it that much! I can't honestly say that I have ever been the type of person to want to keep returning to the same location - I much prefer to try new places each time, but not this time. Maybe next time it won't feel the same way but for now, this is one very happy family and we left with an overall feeling of luxury and fondness for our time there. In short, we LOVED it!
