Best things about resort--The breathtaking views, "Dirty Monkey", and the pools
Best attractions or restaurants nearby--Edith's, The Office, Cabo Wabo
This has been one of the most gorgeous resorts we have ever visited. The views are spectacular! Every room has an ocean view. When we checked in, they gave us a room overlooking the kid's pool. This was perfect for us since we had 3 children. We had a one bedroom with 2 full bathrooms. We had a kitchen with a full sized refrigerator. Our balcony was very large and had 2 chairs, a small table, and a lounger. We had plenty of room. We did rent a car and take the short drive to Wal-Mart for supplies. It helped out a lot with breakfast and lunch. We checked the store at Sunset and they had frosted flakes "zucaritas" for $10/box! So I would say try to make a trip to Wal-Mart at least once. The housekeeping staff took very good care of us. I would estimate that they spent a good hour cleaning our room each day. We left a small tip and in return saw many "folded towel creatures". When we checked in, we were directed immediately to the "timeshare" people. If you are not interested in this, then try your best to put them off. We did not haggle, and in the end decided it wasn't worth our time. They were not too overbearing.
This resort is situated on a large hill. The resort has motorized carts to drive everyone around and it normally did not take too long to find one or call for one. A couple of times we gave up and walked, but the walk was pretty hard so we felt like we would get a good workout. The carts were quite entertaining, the drivers would zip around so quickly that we felt like we were on an amusement ride.
On our 1st night, we had dinner at The Bistro. We had been traveling all day and had some very hungry children. Unfortunately, we received the WORST service at this restaurant. The service was virtually non-existent. Our waiter continuously ignored us and we had to approach him in order to get refills on our drinks. Our food took nearly an hour to come out and their were no apologies. We never returned. We had somewhat better service at La Nao, but it does seem that the service we received was still somewhat slower than what we were used to in the states. We tried not to eat too many meals in Pueblo Bonito's restaurants. We prefered the dining we found in Cabo. By far, Edith's was the best food ever! We had sea bass, lobster, and prawns. One plate was over $70, but my husband and I shared and it was plenty. This was a very expensive restaurant. Our 2nd favorite was The Office. Right on the beach, literally. It was beautiful, yet also quite expensive. Many restaurants do not have children's menus, so be prepared to buy an adult meal and split it.
The concierge at Sunset was very helpful. On our first day there, we left our camera at the pool. We questioned several staff members and the concierge did as well. After 4 days, it did not turn up. My husband continued to question the staff and finally found someone who remembered seeing it. That person also gave us the name of an employee who was going to turn it in. We think that since we finally had a name, the concierge was able to track down the camera. Thank you! When we received the camera back, all of the settings had been switched to spanish. It made us feel that this particular employee was planning on keeping it, and the only reason we have it again is because we found out a name. So be careful with your belongings. This incident turned out happily, but I imagine it only did because we found the one person who remembered something. The concierge was very helpful though and made many phone calls trying to locate it. They were also very helpful in helping us make plans for fishing, snorkling, and driving to Todos Santos.
We loved this resort so much that when we spent the day away from it, we couldn't wait to get back. It is so much nicer than PB Rose. Rose is more like a hotel and is located on a very busy beach. We did spend one day there and played in the ocean. We also did some para-sailing which was a great experience.
The beach at Sunset is beautiful and quite clean. I would walk on it every morning and it felt like I had it all to myself. If you like to be away from the crowd, then this is the place to be. The water is very dangerous on this side of the penisula, so swimming and walking in the water is prohibited. This was not really an issue for us, since we spent most of our time at the pools and took evening walks on the beach. The waves were impresive to watch.
Happy hour at the pool bars are from 4-5 p.m. and some of the bars would get quite crowded at this time, so it was difficult to get a drink. Even when it wasn't happy hour, the bartenders seemed to be difficult to get their attention. You actually might have better service from the waiters. My favorite drink was the "Dirty Monkey", try it! Sunset seemed to have rotating "happy hours". After the pool bars ended, then the Manila bar would have one, and then the Lobby Bar would have one from 7:30-8:30. This was a favorite, they had nightly entertainment and the view was spectacular.
One activity that Sunset had and we just happened upon was the "scuba discovery". There was a representative at the main pool with scuba equipment that people could "try out". It cost $2 and my children really enjoyed this experience. It was unplanned and they still can't stop talking about it.
Overall, this was an awesome resort. We loved it so much that we plan to return next year. We highly recommend it to anyone with families or not. There was an adult pool and the resort is so spread out that it never seemed too crowded.
