“Almost Perfect”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

We just spent a week here from March 18 with our family of 5, three kids aged 10 to 17. This resort is absolutely stunning and cannot say enough about the beauty of everything here including the gardens, pools, views, bars ans restaurants. The rooms are stunning and the ocean views even more so. We had an exutive one bdrm suite and was huge and the deck was very large with table and loungers to enjoy the amazing view. The staff were all very friendly and try their best to satisfy everbody. As it was spring break, chairs were at a premium and if you were down at main pool or skypool after 8am you were SOL! We did not do the all inc is it is very expensive for a family unless you eat and drink all day. We had a car and drove to Walmart (10 min) and stocked up on all the neccesities as well as driving into town everynight for dinner (5 min). You cannot walk into town as its a bit much but a very simple car drive. The pool side drinks are not cheap so wait for happy hour 4-5. This resort really is breathtaking and we have stayed at some nice resorts but keep in mind that this is Mexico not Disneyland so dont expect everything to be perfect and upto 5 star US standards. Now the cons. As this resort is built into a side of a mountain, you are relying on the carts to get you around and this can be wearing on you after a few long waits but for then most part fairly effective. The beach is stunning but you are not allowed near the water due to the big waves and undertow. The least they can do is provide lounge chairs and umbrellas which would alleviate the serious lounge chair or lack of problem on the pool decks! The free wifi was spotty at best so dont expect any. We did the time share pitch this time, first time ever for $400 and we highly recomend NOT to unless you like being humiliated, embarrased and pressured. It is not 90 minutes and this individual (Raffael) was a #%!%. Overall, this resort is close to perfect and stunningly beautiful. If you come with a positive Mexican attitude and some patience, you will have a great time here.

Room Tip: Building 12 was walking distance to main pool and beach.

We own a timeshare here and have been coming to Sunset Beach for the past nine years. At first, it was a five-star resort - immaculate grounds, excellent service, wonderful food. Unfortunately, the resort has gone downhill. The pools are now overflowing with people, the room service is expensive and worse than a McDonald's, the mosquitos drive you inside at night, and the rooms are lacking the basics like towels and shampoo. On the bright side, the housekeeping and guest services staff is still as prompt and professional as always, the views are stunning, and the whales pass by in plain view. We are not sure if this change is due to the resort's emphasis and push on the all-inclusive meal/drink plan or just the fact that the resort is no longer a new property. Whatever the reason, we hope management turns the ship around and soon.

5 stars would be near perfection for me, so 4 stars is a high recommendation. We just returned from 8 nite stay at PBSB. We came a day earlier than originally planned and had to book a studio for the first night. We were given an upgrade at check in and spent the whole time in room 722. This was ideal for us. 2nd floor, on the beach, close to the main pool, able to hear the ocean, private. The grounds were beautiful and we didnt mind the walking. Golf carts were fine and wait times were reasonable. The timeshare offers were easily refused. We were asked probably 5-6 times at various times/ places. We enjoyed being slightly away from the city and it was nice to cross over the mountain ridge to return home. We rented a car (Dominic; highly recommended!!!) and the valet service was nice. La Frida was beautiful but expensive. The breakfast buffet, pool-side service was great. Our maid Bianca was very good and helped find a lost stuffed animal. We walked on the beach, enjoyed the massive waves, watched whales. For ocean swimming we took day trips to playa Santa Maria and to Cerritos beach. Highly recommended. We did all inclusive for three days. We are not big drinkers, eaters so I am not sure it was worth it. If you plan on eating three full meals and drinking alot of alcohol it might be a good deal. Also, we enjoyed eating off the property and felt limited by the plan. We did witness some other guests having some problems at front desk with what seemed to be snafus re reservations. Busy on check in and check out, requires a bit of patience. Overall, we were pleased and would definitely return.

Room Tip: We enjoyed room 722. 2nd floor, on the beach.

This is the first time to what I used to call a "slice of Heaven" and close to calling it Hell after this trip. The only thing I could possibly attribute to is the lack of workers to serve the all-inclusive and change in golf cart service (less workers both in the pools as well as no reception area as in the past and longer wait for carts) Sometimes the sheets were most comfortable and sometimes it was sheets with pills on them which does not meet my satisfaction! It is now a place that could not have been more off of the mark.

Cons:
*The bar on the main floor that has the outstanding view is no longer available for cocktail service
*Their golf cart service is no longer a well-oiled machine and in fact lacking in number
*There were mosquitoes on this trip for some reason concentrated highly all around the property
*There are more people wanting to order and less workers to service to pool area...2 per area at the skypool
*The lady giving out towels at the skypool was most unfriendly and very rude! She would not allow me to have two towels as I have done in years past-not enough towels
*People fighting over chairs and not enough lounge chairs by the pool and none on the beach *La Nao used one of the top two restaurants on the property but this trip no way! Rude workers and no one seemed happy but they worked hard, just not enough workers.
*Must make restaurant reservations in advance now!

I am hopeful that if and when I return that the kinks will be ironed out. I will stay tuned to Trip Advisor reviews to assist me in my decision. We did participate in the all-inclusive and glad we did although difficulty securing a reservation and sometimes slow service made it a little less inviting. When we could not get a reservation, we ordered room service, which was always good, and well-worth the $5 fee...enjoyed it.

Pro: (I like to end with a pro!)
*This is a beautiful, grand property that is most impressive!
*All rooms are beachfront with views to die for and whales bopping up and crashing waves in the Pacific Ocean. You will never see such a better view in all of Cabo than here at the Pueblo Bonito Sunset!
*The grounds are well maintained and well-kept to perfection!
*The buses that take you to the sister properties are Mercedes Shuttle Buses and very comfortable! They take you to what I call "the wild side" near the Office, etc.
*Most of the restaurants still very good
*Rooms- once get a good room location you can relax and enjoy a clean, well-kept room!
*The view of the water is stunning and there are still some good workers there!
*The skypool is always a joy even if crowded! Carlos is the very best worker on the property always service with a SMILE.
*Food and drinks are always great- shrimp cocktails, fish sandwich and fish ceviche a must try! Hoping to get more workers to service the massive groups or rid the all-inclusive so everyone raves once again how this place is slice of heaven! It used to be and am hopeful that manager gets things back on track and to perfection! Lots of tweaking needed to make it "a slice of heaven."

Room Tip: All rooms are set to undergo new furnishings in April as well as renovations so all rooms will be ei...

Used a friend's timeshare which means our experience may not be typical. Enjoyed an Executive Deluxe (or Deluxe Executive) suite, midway between beach and main complex. Huge, with kitchen, two baths, wrap around balcony overlooking the surf and jacuzzi. Generous size. Furnishings could have been more comfortable, but as you spend all your time outside not a big issue. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful even when not always as efficient. There were times that, despite the numbers, they seemed understaffed..especially at reception and concierge. Location is great with sun rising to the east, following along the beach and setting to the west (no doubt source of the name). A long walk up and downhill into town, but regular shuttles available. Concierge, rental car outlet on premises also help with getting around. Recommended for the romantic/relaxing getaway.
Lots of choices for dining and if intent is to eat at PBSB, give serious consideration to the meal plan. Prices are negotiable (especially if you are prepared to entertain their timeshare pitch) but all meals, including beer, wine, tequila, etc. at a fixed price is hard to beat. Supplement for fine dining at La Frida ($20 per person) was well worth it but be sure to reserve in advance as it is a small dining room only open for dinners.
Only ding (other than noted above) are sales pitches. Hotel materials discourage patronizing vendors along the beach (to preserve the atmosphere) but timeshare offers start on check-in and recur regularly, even when dining!

Room Tip: All rooms have ocean view. If on the beach be prepared to use golf cart shuttles as it is a steep c...

This is a very large and beautiful property, but very poorly run. 45 minutes to check in 6 parties standing in line, we were assigned to a room already occupied, another hour straightening that out. Restaurant reservations were lost on two different nights, pool area restaurant is horrible - cold buffet food and on "Argentina night" overcooked and tough steaks and roasts. All pools overcrowded - all lounge chairs gone by 9 or 10am, need to be there by 8am and stake out your claim. Not enough lounge chairs are available, yet there is room for more. Food is very expensive for what you get unless you are on their all inclusive plan as part of an air/hotel package (but not worth $100/day on its own) if it does not come with your package.

We got high pressured and bribed ($500 worth of stuff) to attend the time share demo, told they knew we were not interested but to do anyway so they could fill their quota. Promised it would only be 90 minutes. We heard the whole pitch and after 2.5 hours said we were not interested so the sales person told us we were "fu**ed" and that we would not get the promised awards for attending. We left without the stuff to get away from the jerk, but then talked to the manager and got our stuff. 2.5 hours not worth the $500.

You need a reservation for everything - to get the shuttle to their sister resort need to book 24 hours in advance, both ways (don't listen when they tell you don't need to book the return). Restaurants also require reservations, usually 24 hours in advance.

They have beautiful pictures of their beach on the website, they forget to tell you that you cannot swim there because of high surf and undertow, and there are a total of 8 lounge chairs on the beach.

Check out took another 35 minutes, almost missed our shuttle to the airport.

LaFrieda restaurant is very good ($20 upcharge per person) and pool bar food is good but expensive.

Room Tip: This is a huge property, they use golf carts to get around up and down the huge hill it is on. So g...

Just returned after a week stay. Will admit, grounds and rooms beautiful, but will never go back. Waited over 20 mins for coffee at La Bistra at breakfast. Not enough staff for number of all inclusives. Not enough pools for number of rooms. No pool lounge chairs even at 8:15AM. Fist fight between 2 families over cabana by main pool 2 separate times during the week Discovered you need to get clean towels the day prior and CLAIM your pool area by 7:15 at latest or no chairs. Tables and chairs by grill area taken by 11:15 daily. To take shuttle for beach in am you MUST reserve 24 hrs in advance or SOL. Ate at Cilantro on all inclusive plan one night. Portion size is for a child...small steak, half of baked potato and tablespoon of mushrooms. Sunday brunch requires reservations, but this info is listed under DINNER on the all inclusive list. Went at 12 noon and realized many of the items were also on the regular breakfast buffet. Went for pre-dinner drinks at Sunset lounge that was over run with teenagers playing handball against the stucco walls. I would have expected the server to have alerted a manager to decretely said something to the parents and the young adults (they were a group of 20+) THe all inclusive price is 105/pp per day...went to Medano beach club and for 100 had breakfast/lunch/dinner and all the drinks I cared to have including tip for 2 people! This included attentive service and a beach front LOUNGE. Whomever said Sunset is one of the top 10 resorts in Mexico should have their head examined.......
