Dates of Stay: 11/24/07 thru 12/01/07
Booking: PCI Points
Type of Room: Studio, bldg 22
Pros:
-Nice resort (landscaping, artwork, marble).
-Great beds
-Whale sightings from room
-Sky pool at sunset
-Access to sister resorts
-Internet
-Trio with female singer at the Lobby bar. Don't miss this.
Cons:
-Our room in bldg 22 is right above the exhaust fans of the main lobby below. If I went back I would ask for a unit below the lobby level
-Groceries on site are beyond expensive (presumably to encourage restaurant business)
Suggestions:
-Utilize the beach. PBSB Beach itself is not utilized for sitting or service (no chaises, palapas or cocktail service on the beach). The other PB resorts have a nice beach environment (as do most other beach resorts).
-Larger portions in restaurants.
Transportation: We booked ahead for a shuttle for $17/pp. As usual, in Mexico once you clear your inspection just don't stop walking until you get out of the airport. All the folks there will shout "RCI?" or "Pueblo Bonito?" or "We have you shuttle here" or any number of things to get you to stop and talk. They are trying to recruit you to tour their resort. They get a commission for this. The real airport transportation is outside. We booked transportation back to the airport through the concierge for $16/pp. The resort has free shuttles to/from Pacifica and Rose that run all day until about 10:30 PM. Taxis from downtown cost around $10 for 2 people and $20 for 7 people each way.
Overview of Resort: Big resort. Guests stay at any one of several discrete buildings connected by small roads that are serviced by golf carts, but the layout makes it difficult to just go out and stroll around. One needs to be in a "rally kind of mood" to make full use of the concept. The lobby is nicely done with lots of artwork. Many restaurants and bars. Groceries on site. Nice landscaping. Large beach, but no swimming due to undertoe. Several Pools, all with cocktail bars. Look for 2-for-1 drinks. Sky pool is very nice at sunset (as well as sunrise apparently). Main pool is also nice with lots of activities. And if you decide to participate then you may end up with a free drink. Main pool had lots of families. It looked like there were enough umbrellas or tents to cover about half of the chaise lounges. The chaise lounges themselves were just ok. The other PB resorts had padded chaises that were more comfortable.
Overview of Room: All units have balcony and ocean view. Our unit had small kitchinette with fridge, coffee maker, microwave and cooktop. Bathroom in studio has shower only (1 & 2 Br units have tub). Bed is very comfortable (pillowop); nice compared with others I've seen in Mexico. Floors are all tile. Fan and AC worked very well.
Internet: Ethernet port in room for building 19, 20, 21 & 22 (ours worked after slight hiccup - modem required rebooting or something...make sure and ask for help if required. We called to report the problem, they sent a technician within 10 minutes and after that it worked fine for a week). Apparently there is also Internet in courtyard area near Chapel and also near Manila Bar. All internet is free.
PBSB Restaurants: La Nao was nice. We had salmon and sea bass. Both were cooked perfectly and priced at around $15. The wine by the glass I thought was overpriced. Live music during dinner was a solo sax player - very good.
The Bistro was decent. We ate skirt steak and sea bass, with Calamari appetizer. Portions not generous, but food tasted very good. Priced medium ($15/entree, $10/appetizer). Key lime dessert was really good. For live music they had a trio that night that was upbeat and fun.
Pool food was decent. The sushi was great, ceviche was ok. Pizzas were good. Margaritas strong.
Room service was fine. We had the club and the turkey sandwich and they were both very good. Priced Medium (around $15).
Sister Resorts: We tried the shuttle to Pueblo Bonito Pacifica next door and it was outstanding. The Pacifica is classed as a holistic retreat, but PBSB folks can use it too. Only one pool area, but it's got restaurant, bar and hot tub all together. In addition, there is a very nice couch and fire pit area that's nice after dark. The hot tub at Pacifica is nice and hot. In addition, there are beds on the beach at Pacifica that can be rented (you get food and drinks with rental). The beds are set up for an intimate private dinner service at night and can be rented for sleeping.
We took the shuttle to PB Rose on Medano beach. The Rose has a different feel. In the evening around sunset the feel is almost surreal with the land's end in the background. Medano Beach, which is active whereas the beach at PBSB and Pacifica are deserted. All of the beach bars and restaurants are within 100 yards or so. Easy walk to town.
Timeshare Presentation: Of course they will ask you to come to a presentation. If you've never been to a resort before then it may be a shock, but every resort will offer the "welcome package", which is a sales pitch. For this you will get $200 worth of food and drinks at the resort (plus spa credits, a bottle of tequila, blanket, and whatever else you can negotiate). We went ahead and did it and took the money. The tour lets you see the Monteceito villas up on the hill, plus you look at the model units. The whole scenario is a lot of work, even when you already know you will not buy. I know it sounds simple, but be strong and don't forget that you can say no. You also get breakfast. One thing - if you decide to take the time to do this then be aware that Sunday is champagne brunch at La Nao so don't do the presentation that day if you want to do the champagne brunch.
Cabo Downtown: We found the shopping walk through town was good for about 2 days, depending on how much shopping is needed. For dining there are a few good deals, but don't expect it to be really cheap. We found that after appetizer, main course and drinks for 2 people we spent around $40 to $60 for dinner. If you just order tacos then you might get away cheap. Since we went there for more than just tacos we had a few good meals downtown. Would have liked to have more meals in town. We had planned to go to a lot of places - maybe next time.
