Arrived Sun Nov 11. Had an issue with Grey Line with a pickup so did not get to the resort until 8pm. Enjoyable dinner at main restaurant; nothing too special.
Room was an ocean view, but were on bottom floor of building, so actually could only see the garden at night. Room itself was perfect - jr suite, shower no tub, but worked well. Once there was daylight, you could see all the way to the Pedregal and catch a few glimpses of the waves.
Next day did the timeshare thing - first time in 10 years - and of course 90 mins turned into 3 hrs. Did not get much of a tour of resort, but no real high pressure wheeling/dealing. Did not buy.
Rest of day at the pool near the beach - nice service for lunch, great pool, saw sunset from the cabanas on the beach, then a good dinner on the patio at Nao near the pool. (Nothing like someone with a cigar at the next table to make a meal distracting...I guess that happens when you have a cigar bar at the resort! You should have see the exodus of diners.)
The grounds are well maintained, and it takes getting used to the carts, especially when you are a ways from the main building and the pools. They can get distracting with the noise at night if you like to keep the doors open to the balcony. Except for the first day, the shuttle service was quite prompt.
The pools - fantastic ones everywhere at the resort for every taste; adult lap pool near the main building, separate kid pool, large pool at the beach with the largest shaded jacuzzi that could actually seat 30 people, another one just above our room that was nearly always deserted, and the magnificent new Sky Pool on the top of the mountain over the Pacific.. All pools except the lap pool had swimup bar and restaurant; that one had chair service.
La Frida - let me say that I always considered Cafe De Artists in Puerto Vallarta the only world class restaurant I have been to on the coast of Mexico....I have to say La Frida exceeds that high level for food although not for ambience. Intimate, colorful, musical (yes, piano and fabulous singer...and no hands out for tips either!), and feast for nose, tongue, and eyes. This is the best of Cabo. No list of wines by the glass, but you ask, they bring a good bottle, and pour.
Other things
- boat trip on Pez Gato at sunset (Tropicat was full) was quite enjoyable.
- lunch and Margaritas at The Office is the ritual.
- visit to PB Blanco using shuttle was convenient, but this resort now pales against PBSB for the grounds, and it is really a preferrence for Medano vs. Pacific which each person has to make for themselves.
- dinner at Sancho Panza at the "Tesoro" - no live music that night, but very creative food which was delicious, and a good wine list.
- Avis rental at PBSB which was arranged from the PB Rose was good. Basic manual car with ac for $71 all inclusive. Used 1/2 tank gas to go to Todos Santos, La Paz and back. Lots of road work going out of CSL north, and the last stretch into La Paz.
- Lunch at Cafe Santa Fe was delightful, everyone was on the patio, including Italian-speaking tourists.
- Lots of street activity due to the Baja 1000 coming in on Wed/Thursday. Driving can be challenging especially at night as the days get shorter.
- Stopped at Cabo Wabo - nicer that I remember in the patio area with a 3 piece group of guitarists playing some Rock n Roll standards. Nice Margartas for sure. This place can vary from fun to tacky to just plain boring. Today was fun outside.
- Last night dinner at Mi Casa - wow is this place a lot bigger! Been 5 years and it is now 3 buildings. Still maintains some charm. Got seated immediately; good Margaritas...but still I like The Office or Cabo Wabo better.

In 2005 we bought a studio time share at the Sunset while staying at the Rose and it was sold as a trade of our Rose week for the Sunset property. We were lied to by sales director, Kurt Murat, that our Rose week was worth almost as much as we were paying for the Sunset week and we were just trading. It turned out that all that happened was that we just bought another time share. They work with a resale company, Elite Retreat, who then charge you $199 to list your Rose week and after two years, not even one offer.

Advise: Stay away from all Pueblo Bonita properites, their time share sales people are relentless, are fraudulent in their dealings, not a word of theirs is true. On a trip this month, we found two other couples who had an identical experience with the Sunset time share sales.

Management response from GMSunset, General Manager
(Management representative)
Dec 3, 2007
This non-travel related review by a one-time poster has left us puzzled, to say the least.

While we do not know who this owner might be, I am told by our Sales Director that Elite Retreat frequently sells units on behalf of owners, usually at prices 30-40% higher than they were originally quoted.

I stayed at the Sunset Beach for a week in October. Overall, my girlfriend and I enjoyed our experience, and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Yes, they do try to sell you timeshares, but we didn't find the experience that bad. We went on the presentation to get our $200 discount, lied when they asked about our personal info (grossly understating our income, making it sound like we were up to our ears in debt back home, etc.) so that it became clear to the sales rep that they shouldn't waste their time doing a hard sell on us. They probably get more annoying if you look like you're on the fence. We listened politely to the pitch, said no, and that was it... no more harrassment after that.

Incidentally, the time share pitch is this: if you spend $x/night on a hotel for your typical vacation, multiply that by 7 nights (or 14 nights) a year, and by 30 years, and wow -- it's a six figure number. So instead, pay just one small lumps sum now. Well, if you were to take that small lump sum and invest it in a mutual fund, guess what -- it'll also be worth a six figure number in 30 years! It's all geared to fool people who don't understand basic finance.

As far as the resort itself -- we were very happy with the room (room was new & clean and a good size, bed was comfy), the restaurants, the pools and the service. It's true that you can't go into the ocean, but -- with the pools as nice as they are, who cares? We spent some time hanging around the beach in Cabo, and found it to be an annoying experience... you get harrassed every 2 mins. by someone trying to sell you something, so all in all we were happier about the fact that we were staying in a more quiet, peaceful setting. Getting to and from town wasn't a big deal. If you plan to go to town every day, then stay someplace in town... but otherwise, it's $12 & a 15 min. cab ride. Not a big deal.

The golf carts were a bit annoying, in that they keep going by & if you're on foot you have to be on the lookout for them so that you don't get run over. We hardly needed to use them. if you're out of shape, or in a faraway building, then maybe you would, but we just walked most of the time. When we did need a cart, they came reasonably quick -- though it wasn't busy season, so who knows what it's like at other times of the year.

The only thing that marred our experience is that both my girlfriend and I had tummy trouble. We can't definitively say what it was (we did eat in town as well) but we both suspect salads that we had at the Sunset. Don't get me wrong, the food was phenomenal and everything seemed very clean. We have fond memories of some of the meals there -- dont miss the Frida, or the mexican buffet at the Nao. But... it just takes one employee not being as cautious as they should. I'd say just stay away from lettuce-based salad, just to be safe.

All in all, we'd go back again. It wasn't 100% perfect, but it was a good place to spend out vacation.

We experienced a one bedroom villa at Sunset Beach. It was on the ground floor of a 3 story complex. The massive resort is spread verticlly up a mountain side with lush vegetation beteen hotel complexes. Transport to the rooms is by gas powered golf carts from the hotel proper. Exhaust and noise eminate from them at all hours. The lush vegetation is watered by timed sprinklers during the day and night. The water used to sprinkle the plants is apparantly sewer water because of the foul odor residue that lingers for a couple of hours and a warning to keep yur patio doors closed if you are in a ground floor unit.

The hotel is isolated on the Pacific Ocean side of Cabo San Lucas over the hills rising out of the center of town. You must have an auto, take a taxi (about $12 one way) or you may take an hourly shuttleprovided by the Sunset to the Pueblo Bonito Rose' sister resort on the Sea of Cortez side about a 15 min walk out of downtown Cabo.

The hotel actually faces South Southeast along its beach, which you cannot even go near to because of the ocean wave action, rip-tides or undertow safety considerations. You can see the sunrise but the sun sets over the land to the right if facing the ocean.

The accomondations are upscale but the location and these considerations are more than distractions. You can find just as nice accomondations on the Sea of Cortez side without these issues to deal with.

This was an absolutely beautiful property, and overall we had a pretty decent vacation.

...BUT, the timeshare agents are everywhere, very intrusive, and relentless in their efforts to make a sell.

My wife is pregnant, and went to the spa for a massage. As she and several other women were sitting in the changing room area in their robes waiting for their massages, a timeshare agent (with a group of prospective buyers) barged into the adjoining room. Since the door between rooms was open, the half-naked women were in plain view of the timeshare group for several minutes. When I met my wife after her massage, she told me what happened so I discussed her experience with the manager. I explained that I wasn't looking for a credit or any money back, but I wanted him to know that I didn't appreciate my wife being part of the timeshare tour. His response was apathetic at best, and he immediately placed the blame on the spa manager, not the intrusive timeshare agent.

Also, the water used for irrigation is reused from god knows what, and smells bad enough to bring on a gag reflex....and be prepared for the smell of dirty exhaust fumes coming from the abundance of gas-powered golf carts all over the place.

Oh ya, be warned if you are considering purchasing a timeshare. We spoke with several timeshare owners at the resort, and if you own a timeshare, I was told that you will need to book your trip more than a year in advance if you wish to travel during popular times. Not many timeshare owners are happy with their purchase, and several owners are convinced that the timeshares are now oversold.

Now for the good stuff - the property was beautiful, room was new and spacious, bed was comfortable, the views were breathtaking, and the food wasn't bad at all. In fact, our dinner at the neighboring Pueblo Bonito Pacifica was one of the best meals we had we had on our trip, and compared favorably with Charlie Trotter's famed "C" restaurant, which was down the road at The One & Only Palmia Resort.

Overall, we had a pretty good trip, but it really would have been excellent if they would focus a bit more on their customer's experience, and a bit less on making everyone a timeshare customer!
