We enjoyed our week-long stay at the Pueblo Bonito (PB) Sunset Beach (SB) - we arrived on a Sunday (10/28) in the early afternoon and were told that our room was not ready (4pm is the official check-in time). Our luggage was checked in with the bellhop and went to the Bistro to lunch and wait for our room.
There are happy hours starting around noon going through the early evening at different pools/restaurants/locations at the resort so we were able to take advantage of 2 for 1 drinks at the Bistro.
Afterwards, we checked back in and found that our room was ready. Because Sunday is a major check-out/check-in day, the line at the front desk was lengthy. As a lesson learned, try to book a check in on an "off day" such as a weekday or a Saturday.
There was an understandable wait for golf cart transportation to our room (lots of luggage to be sorted out and loaded on the golf carts then transport the guests to their rooms). The resort is huge and while you can walk to get around, some areas are on a steep incline which makes the golf cart option safer and faster.
The weather was great, and we were on vacation so no need to complain or be impatient! Once we entered our room, we discovered that we were given two beds instead of a king bed. I did not request a king bed in my initial reservation so had to call the front desk to get another room.
Because it was check-in day, the front desk phone was ringing for awhile and when answered, I got put on hold for a long period of time (over 5 minutes).
Eventually, everything was settled - it was an inconvenience because the resort is so big and getting from place to place (especially with luggage) necessitates having a golf cart driver to assist you.
The overall time to get this resolved was more lengthy than what you would get at other hotels where you didn't need a golf cart to get from place to place. The combined "perfect storm" of having to switch rooms during the busy check-in day contributed to the delays.
As previously stated, the weather and views were breathtaking and the customer service was very accommodating once they had a chance to serve you so we weren't so disgruntled.
Our room was very clean and all the rooms are ocean facing - our building (20) was a newer building and higher up on the grounds so we had a breathtaking view of the entire resort and ocean.
We did not see any bugs in our room minus the occasional mosquito during our entire stay but there is a can of bug spray that they put under the sink in the kitchen.
In the newer buildings (20, 21, 22) they have internet access in the rooms but it is not wireless. You need to have an ethernet cord to plug in. If you are not in a newer building there is free wireless in the courtyard near the spa. There are also computer stations with internet access but is not free.
Be aware that if your neighbor decides to cook something in their kitchen, you will most likely smell it - there is ventilation but it doesn't vent anywhere. The kitchen we were at did not have an oven, only a microwave so if you are planning to cook, plan accordingly.
Maid service was very good- if you are cooking, they will clean the dishes for $5 USD per day. We opted to clean our dishes ourselves (no dishwasher) but the maid put away our dishes from the drying rack.
To be expected at any non-all inclusive resort, the prices are inflated at the mini supermarket they have on-site. Many guests opted to head into town to the local supermarkets and stock on up water and groceries.
There is a free shuttle that takes you to the sister resort in downtown Cabo (PB Rose) but on the bus there is a sign that explicitly states that you cannot bring luggage or groceries onto the bus. If buying groceries for your kitchen, you will have to take a cab back to the resort (~$10 + tip).
Many reviews have mentioned that it's a "short walk" into town but don't let that fool you...it's a lengthy walk and you are going through some rural streets to get to the main drag. While walking, you will be solicited by vendors trying to sell timeshares or other activities (ATVs, tours, etc).
When you get into downtown Cabo, there is a pretty good supermarket across the street from the Hard Rock Cafe, and there is a Costco, a "mega" supermarket called "CCC" and another "mega Wal-Mart-like" store called "Soriana" which is right down the street from CCC. The mega stores are just outside of the main tourist streets in downtown Cabo but you will be able to get a taxi to take you to and from these stores.
Also remember that on "check-in" day, guests all flock to these stores and return with their goods having to wait for the golf carts along with the other guests still trying to get to their rooms for the first time. Consider making your grocery run in non-peak hours ( a day later) - we saw frustrated guests who had bought milk, frozen items, etc and had to wait for long periods to get to their rooms.
If you are an owner, you can use the workout facility for free, otherwise as a guest it is $15 a day. I had seen this facility during the holiday season, and it was packed. However, during our stay there were people there but was not too crowded. There are classes (also for a fee) and the studio is pretty small so sign up early to reserve a spot.
At check-in, we were given the "greeting" for attending the owner's lunch. Unlike the first sales pitch where they offer hundreds of dollars in food/spa credits, they only offered a $50 food credit and discounts for activities and Spa. They didn't "hard sell" you as much since they were dealing with current owners.
As for the other facilities at SB, the Sky pool is at the very top of the resort on a cliff - if you are not staying at bldg 19-20 then you will need to take a golf cart to the building, take the elevator to the 9th floor and then take another golf cart to the pool. You can always walk it but be mindful of the incline - people with disabilities may have difficulty because of the steepness.
We dined at La Nao which was good, but not spectacular and in my opinion a bit overpriced. The Bistro was very reasonable but if you are staying for 7 days, eating at the same locations may wear thin. We also had the opportunity to dine at the sister restaurant Fellini's at the PB Rose. The food was very good - best bruschetta we ever had, but the prices were on the steep side. Since we were staying at the SB we received a 10% discount which was nice. The room service was very good - almost cheaper than the other dining options at the resort.
The last few days we opted to get a rental car (we contacted Dominic who delivered our car to the hotel lobby entrance) - there are two floors underground in the main building for visitor and guest parking. Parking was free. We were fortunate to find parking each time but there were times where we got the last spot. Elevators take you straight from the parking levels to the
golf cart stand/lobby/restaurant levels for convenience.
The night before we were to checkout, we were given an estimate of the charges to our room - in the bill, they wrote that we could settle that night before 10pm and bypass the waiting in line the next morning to checkout. Contrary to some of the reviews posted here, our bill was accurate. Remembering the hassle for checking in (luggage, transportation, waits in line) we happily made the trip to the front desk Saturday night to settle up.
Getting ready to leave with our luggage, the golf cart had to call a special golf cart to transport us with our luggage. They were very good in dropping us off at the parking lot and helped us load the car.
Overall, the service was excellent....maid service, golf cart service, wait staff. The grounds were beautiful and well maintained. I think we didn't go during the "busy season" so there weren't too many families and it was mostly older couples. This is not a "spring break" environment yet did not feel like a retirement home either.
Other activities we did included fishing - definitely a good upper body workout, ATVing along the beach - recommend going near dusk to catch the sunset, and golf at Cabo Del Sol and Cabo Real. Pricey green fees but these courses have holes reminiscent of Pebble Beach.
Outside the resort, we ate at Romeo and Julieta (Italian food - simple basic menu but very good), Cabo Wabo (overrated), BK/Mickey D's (taste just like home but had to wait over 15 mins for food...definitely redefining "fast food", Hard Rock Cafe (surprisingly good), and Art Sushi (very good sushi for a reasonable price).
