The beds are terribly uncomfortable - it got slightly better when we asked for a foam topper so if you are going to stay there ask for it from the get go. Don't even consider putting anyone - even a light weight child on the sleeper sofa - they are dreadful - rather order a roll away or two. I felt that the decor was pretty average for a 5 star, and in Mexico you could have a ball with decor, it was definately lacking and lacked any character in that department, very main stream and average. The pool area was fabulous and the on beach location very pretty. Drinks are expensive $10 for a margarita in a small cheap plastic cup pool side. The restaurant was empty most of the time - most probably because steaks range from $50 to $100 - there was a grill that seemed to get a few more customers but I never checked out the prices there so can't report on that. Gym was nice and neat and nice spa area in locker rooms. There is construction work going on unless you are on the residential side of the resort - it was not too intrusive though. We had problems with the beds and although management tried to help us - it was ineffectual and actually on departure we had one staff member be incredibly rude to us - he thought he had got away with it by speaking spanish but unfortunately for him and to his surprise - my husband speaks spanish, luckily this only happened as we were leaving.
When you arrive in San Jose airport - be prepared you will be hounded by people trying every trick in the book to sell you a gold card - which is basically a discount card for certain restaurants - it was not worth it for us - you don't buy the card but have to go to a breakfast on fractional ownership - so it might work for some people. We found it cheaper and much better to hire a cheap car and get ourselves around - this ran at a cost of $55 per day inc everything.
We were told the kids club was in the hotel next door and included - it was next door but not included - it was $40 per child for 6 hours and the schedule of events was very very basic - so if you are going there for the kids club - be warned - it is not that great, we have had much better at other resorts.
Although they are trying to keep out the Spring Break crowd and send them elsewhere - it does not always work and be prepared for drunken teens and swearing and loudness at times (it doesn't go on for long periods but it can happen) - this works for some people but with kids it is not great. We eventually left and rented our own private villa (3 beds and a pool etc) at the same cost as a one bedroom apartment at this resort and it worked out much much better all around. After a dodgy start in Cabos at this resort we ended up very happy in our villa when we moved.
The hotel was clean and grounds well kept. If it were a 4 star I would have been less disappointed. I have lived on 3 continents and been to my fair share of 5 star hotels and resorts and this one was definately lacking especially as far as customer service skills were concerned.
