We just returned (3/12-3/17) from VLE. My husband, two children (5 and 6), and I were in a 2bd/3bth villa.
ROOMS/LOCATION: The villa was very nice and large with a huge balcony- Great for enjoying the views and a glass of wine at the end of the day. The full kitchen was especially helpful with the kids. Other reviews mentioned hard beds which I thought to be comfortable. My husband did think it was hard. The location of the property is perfect. A nice walk to the party side of the beach for action and just far enough away to relax. VDP has a ton of action too.
CLEANING: We booked through the owner via a third party. Know you only get maid service every other day. Another family traveling with us only got one day of maid service. You will pay $33us to get someone to clean your room. And yes, we tip our maids at every hotel. Plan ahead.
FOOD AND SERVICE: We ate the buffet both at VLE and at Villa Del Palmar, ordered room service (took almost two hours) and ordered pool side almost everyday. I would say that the service was very slow at VLE and better at VDP. Definitely go down the beach towards town for a better meal, price and service. They really took care of us (15 in our group total) at the Office and the Sand Bar. We also had dinner at Desperado in town, which was good. The market at the resort has a decent selection and prices.
FUN: You can find just about every thing you want to do right on the beach. We jet skiied, banana boated (they take you to the arch where the seals are which is cool), got hair braided, tattooed the kids (henna), bought jewelry, etc. etc. The vendors get a little more aggressive down the beach because at the resort you are roped off and they are not allowed to enter. Also swimming is better towards town as well. It gets a little rough in front of the resort.
We travel to Mexico approx. 4 times per year. I rarely complain but when you are being charged 5 star prices you expect service somewhere close to it. I don't like doing my own dishes and I do expect fresh towels. All in all it was a fun vacation. Remember you are in Mexico; not the US- and enjoy the culture.
