Before I booked Estancia, I read many, many of the other reviews. Let me comment on my experience with the negatives I read in the other reviews:
-- The beds are firm, but we slept soundly after a few cocktails.
-- The poolside restaurant/bar is pricey ($15 for a sandwich, $9 for a daquiri), but it is very convenient.
-- If you go to Cabo during Spring Break or after graduation, you must expect that there are going to be crazy 16-25 year olds. It doesn't matter where you stay. We purposely planned our trip between those two "party" times to avoid obnoxious people.
-- We booked through Expedia because we didn't care about the view our room had. But because the resort wasn't fully booked, they automatically upgraded us to a room with a full view of the ocean.
-- The housekeeping was great. They came every day, and even seemed to track your schedule so they would only come when you were out. They even washed all the dirty dishes.
-- We did not notice any sewage smell at any time.
-- Not all of the units share a balcony. We had the "A" (two room suite) and another group had the "B" (single room), but our balconies were separate.
-- All of the staff were extremely helpful and friendly.
-- We did not experience any overbooking issues, but ALL hotels overbook during busy times. Unfortunately, that is what you need to expect when you travel to Cabo during the popular times. I'm not saying it's right, but every hotel does it.
-- One of our bar stools broke, and Estancia replaced it within 4 hours.
-- There is a safe in the room (that you enter your own access code for), so there isn't any issue with things getting stolen.
-- Clean towels were provided every day.
-- If you rent both the "A" (two bedroom suite) and the "B" (single room) units, there is a small outdoor, covered foyer connecting the two. However, there is a full-height gate with keycard access to enter the foyer, so it is completely secure.
-- The pool is large and beautiful.
-- There is no more construction.
-- We are four women in our early 30's and we spent all afternoon laughing and talking by the pool and were never told that we were too loud.
-- We only saw about 5 children there during our last day, and none during our other days at the resort.
Based on the reviews, it seems that there are two different experiences at Estancia - a bad one during the busy times (overbooking, lack of pool chairs, lack of maid service, etc.), and a wonderful one during non-peak times. We stayed in May (prior to college graduations) and had a wonderful time with no problems.
One reviewer pointed out that you need to remember that you are in another country. While you may be used to certain priviledges, amenities, and treatment in the U.S., remember that you are not in the U.S. Some things will be different and you need to go with the flow and be a little flexible.
