We exchanged my mom's time share week for this hotel so it didn't cost us anything and we had low expectations. We are a family of 4 - with 2 young children ages 7 and 4. The hotel information will say that they're 5 minutes walking distance to town, but in the 90 degree heat, it's not within walking distance with children. It's about a $6 USD cab ride. For the first few days, we didn't feel like we had to leave the resort but after a few days, we felt we really had to venture out. The hotel staff is very professional and pleasasnt. There seems to be alot of "security" around at all hours of the day, which is nice. We stayed in a one bedroom in the main building. However, there are a number of larger villas with private jacuzzis and pools. At first, we were disappointed that we had a view of a thatched roof from our balcony. But later we were pleased our windows did not face the sun. We figured out that we needed to request the remote control for the AC after 2 horribly hot days. We wished we figured that one out earlier. Our room had a king in the bedroom and a sofa bed which was supposed to sleep 2. However, the sofa bed was so soft that no one (not even the kids) could sleep on it. Even as a couch, it sagged. The room had a very "authentic" feel and you felt as if you were living in an adobe pueblo. (Definately not a Marriott or Sheraton standard hotel room) There are no dressers in the bedroom, just cubbie holes in the wall to store your clothes. There is no shampoo, hair dryer, dishwaher nor washer or dryer in the unit. However, there is daily maid service and they not only made our beds, but cleaned our dishes each day. There is a coffee maker, microwave, toaster, and blender in the room with a small refridgerator and freezer. There are ceiling fans in the bedroom and living room and kept the rooms cool. However, in the evening, the sound of the fans was a bit loud for the children who live in foggy San Francisco all year long. There are two main pools with swim up bars. The pool is not marked, but the edges were probably about 4 feet and then dropped to very very deep. So, even though the kids knew how to swim and were wearing the inflatbiles around their waist, we still felt we had to be in the pool at all times. The swim up bar was a hit. You can order food from the restaurant or sushi and virgin margaritas for the kids. The hot tub was not kid friendly as only persons 15+ could enter. However, the pool water was warm and there was no need to "warm up" in the hot tub. The hotel is right on the beach and you have to wake up early if you want to save your space under the huts. I think they start allowing you to grab your spot at 7am. I got there at 6:45am and felt I was already too late. There are local vendors walking the beach selling everything from mangos, jewelry, pottery, etc. They are not annoying. You say you're not interested and they walk away. They know they are not allowed to walk into the hotel on on the sand by the hotel property. So, you you're annoyed, say on the sandy part near the hotel property. I actually liked having the cat walk right in front of me and having the store walk up to me. Prices are pretty comparable to the gift shops in town. The food is very yummy from the hotel restaurant. (There is only one restaurant). We also took advantage of the Kiddy activities each day in the club house. Our kids enjoyed making the picture frames, plaster hands and attending the pinata party. We also painted pottery (price: $8-$28) on the beach in front of the hotel. You paint and pay for your piece one day and it's returned to you the next day lacqured and "embellished". The guy is off on Thursdays. The restauarant is connected to the hotel, but you have you to settle your restaurant bill separately in the hospitality suite. I would recommend you settle it either first thing on the day you check out or the day before...the line at 11am on Thursday check out day took way too long. We also rented a car from the hotel conceirge. They have a "deal" with Dollar Rent a Car. It costs about $50 USD to take a taxi to the aiport on Thursdays and only $65 USD to rent a car per day. There is an airport shuttle from the hotel to the airport for only $15 but it doesn't run on Thursdays. Overall, the hotel was unqiue and different. The staff was nice. The grounds were clean and we had a great time as our first family vacation to Mexico.
