Just returned from a trip with three friends to Cabo. We had been looking SO forward to the quick getaway. What we got was NOT what we were promised by the travel agent representing funjet. Major complaints concerning Melia include:
Upon arrival we were greeted by semi-friendly employees at the front desk, and told that our promised ocean view rooms were not available. Our group of four was separated by several floors, and the couple who got a first floor room feared for their safety because the corridors of the ENTIRE complex are VERY dimly lit. I am convinced that if a rape has not yet occured in those hallways, it is simply waiting to happen. They should be ashamed of themselves based on the pitiful excuse for lighting if nothing else.
As we wandered around that first evening (our flight was delayed by two hours so we arrived some time after 9 p.m.) we realized that the ENTIRE complex is dimly lit and feels incredibly unsafe to walk around. It's a good thing that we had absolutely NO REASON to walk around; the pool, hot tub and all bars but one close promptly at 8:00 in the evening. No activities were scheduled for that first evening and we were left with one resturaunt to pick from for dining (the food was consistantly good in all resturaunts). We were in Cabo all dressed up with nowhere to go.
Of course we did have somewhere to go; the city of Cabo. The city we had heard people rave about and describe as glamorous, upscale and fun. We did venture out our second night, and took the shuttle from the hotel which was included in the cost of our stay. It dropped us off in the filthy, overpriced, tourist trap of a city and it was our welcome to downtown Cabo. Blech. We couldn't get out of their soon enough. The shuttle was to pick us up at 11, but the party mood had left us after fighting off preying men and stepping over drunks sleeping on the sidewalks. We returned to our sleepy resort well before the shuttle was to pick us up, paid $20 for the cab ride, and never felt happier to see the lame, creepy, overpriced Melia.
The drinks were WEAK, the service fell just short of average, the employees seemed uninformed, disinterested in helping or answering questions, and the male employees were brazen with their comments about people staying at the resort. The beach was the only saving grace for this resort, and I must add that it had its shortcomings as well. It was NOT a private beach, and you can expect to have people trying to sell you cheap jewelry all day long while you try to enjoy the sun. A quick sneak peak at the Hilton made us long to stay there. Stay away from Melia and "the richest city in Mexico." It is not all it's cracked up to be, and I have to believe that Mexico has more to offer than this.
