“Beautiful resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

My husband and I just returned from a week long vacation at Sirena Del Mar. The resort was spotless and had a great location on the Los Cabos corridor. The room was the smaller one bedroom and the view from the newer building over looked the beach. The private beach was beautiful and never crowded. The pool and fire pit areas were very comfortable and like the beach were never crowded. Unfortunately the dining options were limited and the food was not very appetizing. The staff is great but being on vacation, one wants good food and appetizing drinks. There was little to no alcohol in the drinks and quite frankly the Welks should seriously consider hiring a chef with talent. The reviews consistently mention the poor meals yet nothing has been done to address it in three years. While this was by far one of the most relaxing vacations I've had, I won't return due to the dining choices. Cooking in a kitchen and grilling out are reserved for time spent at home.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the beach are very nice.

After doing much research (thank you fellow contributors) we decided this was the place for our next trip. Sirena del Mar did not disappoint. The resort is as beautiful as the pictures and the staff is wonderful.

The resort only has 68 rooms and two pools (plus a fire pit and a wonderful jacuzzi), and that is exactly up our alley. It is on multiple levels and although we didn't mind steps or feel it was a lot, someone with mobility issues may. We did not eat at the resort much, what we did have, crab stuffed mushrooms for a late night snack, chilaquiles for breakfast and tacos on Taco Tuesday (they are small so you need to order 3 or 4) was very good. I was a little hesitant reading the reviews, but everything was delicious. The special buffet dinners (grill night, Mexican Fiesta) are not cheap, but they give you a decent amount of food and everything is freshly prepared, most times by the chef right at the outdoor grill. In addition, for a very reasonable price, they cooked my husband's and another guest's fish and served it to our room with a salad and side dishes.

We stayed in the "new" building, but the "old" building is only 4 years old. I think the labels give it the wrong connotation. Any room at this resort would be wonderful. We were in an efficiency on the first floor, and although the room was perfect for just two, we wound up cooking a lot and next time would get a room with the full stove. That was the only thing missing (for us - most probably don't cook that much on vacation) and we did make use of the outdoor BBQ grill.

Being in the right hand building, we were closer to the beach although we only walked there twice. The views are amazing and the balconies very private. The only downside was being on the first floor, one morning we did see workers outside on the little grass area between our balcony and the cliff wall landscaping and the curtains are sheer.

As mentioned above, the staff were wonderful and by the end of the week it felt like we were family. Jazzie at the concierge desk arranged the wonderful fishing trip for my husband and called to confirm our other activities that had been pre-arranged through our travel provider (look into AA vacations - they were GREAT to work with and the air/hotel package was better than anything I could arrange separately). She also arranged a diving trip for me which was on a boat with only one other diver. We watched the boat next to us that had 10-12 people - not my idea of a relaxing dive trip.

Alex and Fabian at the bar were fun and helpful (I think Fabian runs the resort - we watched him set up a private dinner for two in a cabana - candles on the path, palm trees, every detail -we'll have to do that next time). They even gave us recommendations on places to go and arranged the fish dinner mentioned above. We enjoyed sitting at the bar each night and telling them about our daily adventures while enjoying a night cap. Gabriel at the bell desk always had our car ready for us, helped us with groceries, and we were in and out of the hotel a couple times each day.

Last, a word about Cabo and time share info. I was having nightmares reading all the reviews for all the resorts and anxious about being hounded. My husband cannot stand this and one of the reasons he doesn't like Cancun. 1. Be aware at the airport that they (different timeshare salespeople from multiple resorts) approach you before you even get outside. Some try to get you on your way to your rental car or while looking for your pre-arranged ride. Just say no and know where/who you are looking for (we went straight out to the Alamo bus - after getting a cocktail at the outside bar - awesome). 2. We were approached again AT the rental car agency while picking up our car. The guy was a bit more of a soft sell, but again, we just said no thanks. 3. We were approached again at the Mega Mart (we had only been off the plane an hour and this was our third encounter) and said no. Each time they offered us more freebies - rental car reimbursement, excursions, credits, cash.

At the resort, they offered us the tour when we checked in and my husband said no, we just wanted to go to our room and they did not bother us again. However, one morning, our off-property activity was cancelled due to the high winds and we opted for the tour at the resort. It was free breakfast and a nice discount off my husband's fishing trip. Although it was more than 90 minutes, it was not a hard sell. We do feel we work all year for this and treasure every vacation minute so wouldn't have gone if we didn't love the resort so much.

We will definitely be back!

Note - We DID rent a car (good price through AAvacations - but be aware of the extra insurance needed, cost about $175 for the week). I confirmed this is NOT covered by Visa or our US car insurance. It was worth it for us as we were out and about a lot. The bus is a 10-15 min walk up the driveway and very inexpensive and easy to get into town, Wal-Mart and back, or you can take taxis which can get expensive. Everything is pretty much on the one mail strip.

One more note - the hotel bills you in US$ so there was no surprise exchange rate adjustment on our cc bill when we got home (like we had with the rental car). :)

Room Tip: All rooms are ocean front. I'm not sure what people worry about in the "older" buildin...

This resort was PERFECT for us. I am currently going thru chemo & we needed an R&R vacay to celebration my 5yr anniversary from my diagnosis (Ovarian Cancer), my husbands B'day & our 16yr anniversary.
THE ROOM:
We had a corner, premium deluxe room in the new building on the 2nd floor & was AWESOME!
We overlooked the Ocean, beach, pool, bar & firepit., Left the bedrrom door cracked each night and slept to the sounds of waves crashing in. Zzzzz
The room was perfect for 2 pp. You open the door into a small living room with couch (fold out sleeper), dining table with bench & 2 chairs, & flat screen TV. Then on the right, a kitchenette w/2 burner stove, microwave, sink, full size stainless fridge, coffee maker, blender, utensils, granite countertops, etc. a pantry, and stackable washer/dryer. On left is the bathroom w/2 sinks, nice tub/shower. At end of all is bdrm w/king bed, 2 night stands a dresser, mirrored closet, flat screen TV and extra large sliding door with patio and 2 comfy chairs & sm table.
SHOPPING:
We shopped at Walmart to get food for bkfst & lunch, beer, alcohol & snacks. $10 ea way.
We shopped at the little flea market shops downtown for souvenirs (they WILL barter with you)
RESTERAUNTS:
Número UNO: (Hacienda Cocina y Cantina) http://www.haciendacocina.com/. GREAT VIEW, FOOD, SERVICE & PRICE. Very romantic, best food in CABO. This is at a VERY nice resort downtown, get down before sunset to walk around and then watch the sunset during dinner.
MARINA: (Captain Tony's) great people watching & food. We had Chimichange & a Chile Relano. They make guacamole fresh at your table. Also have aftn Happy Hour specials (bucket of 5 beers, chips/salsa for $10)
NEAR RESORT: (Right up the road 1/2 way & on North side) have a special of 2 lobster tails for $19.95. Had that & a stuffed chicken breast (spinach & shrimp) & was Yum!!! We walked back to resort.
AT RESORT: they have specials alot. Taco Tues (11-3pm) $2 Pork & Chicken were the best. The chicken club is AWESOME!!! Had 3 different times $ split a couple nites w/a salad. We had steak & lobster tail one evening & we both were not that impressed. Also we made some great frozen margaritas & strawberry mango (froz fruit) rum drinks in our room & saved ALOT of $.
TIPS: we brought a flat cooler & brought water, beer, PBJ's, chips & snacks to the pool & beach.
The resort has beach chairs you can use, which were great under the thatched huts.
Ocean cold & rocky so bring some water shoes. Also include a pair of binoculars. We saw Whales every day and some beautiful birds and lizards too.
ENJOY YOUR TIME HERE, IT'S WONDERFUL......

We originally stayed here last summer so we'd have a place for our daughter to sleep and it has a pull out sofa. We loved the infinity pool overlooking the ocean and our view had an amazing view of the ocean.
My husband and I decided to stay there again this year on our own. It has a fridge, stove, coffee pot, double sinks in the bathroom and a very comfy bed, as well as 2 flat screen tv's a dining table & the list goes on and on. They have a great hot tub, fire pit, and gym & we felt very let down when we went to La Paz to stay at a hotel rated the same amt of stars that did not even come close to comparing. Highly recommend this place. Also, excellent customer service.

Room Tip: No tips. You will be happy (unless you need daily maid service but I clean up daily anyway).

This was my first experience in Cabo and staying at the Welk resort definitely made a lasting impression and I would definitely go back! The whole resort was amazing looking and the whole staff was very friendly and accommodating. Manny, the activities director, is a super cool guy and knows how to have fun with a crowd and make you feel at home. He was half the fun at the resort. You can tell that he really enjoys what he does. Manny is the man!!!

We stayed at this boutique hotel and would highly recommend it! We loved the relaxing atmosphere and beautiful premier one bedroom suite. It is a quiet hotel with an amazing ocean view. The walk to catch the Colectivo into Cabo was about 1/2 mile on a quiet residential street. It costs about $1 USD each way (per person). Taco Tuesdays are worth it - just $2 per taco. Scrumptious! The drinks ranged from $7-$9. There is a happy hour each day at the pool bar. The nights were cool so the poolside fire each night was a nice touch. The staff was friendly and attentive. We didn't eat at the restaurant since the TA reviews rated the food as mostly mediocre. Only slight disappointment was the after dinner drinks on our last night. The bartender poured a skimpy dink - it was barely a shot and was $8. Overall, we had an amazing time and would definitely stay at SDM again!

Room Tip: All the rooms are ocean-front. Stay on 2nd or 3rd floor for best views.

The views from our room were absolutely breath taking! The views from every place on the Welk Resort are amazing. If you are running on the treadmill in the gym your view is the ocean! There was plenty of places to sit at the pool and around there. Everything was extremely clean. Since the resort is small there wasn't a lot of people there so it wasn't crowded at all. The servers were awesome and never pestered you and were all so friendly. You can pretty much stay on the property the whole time since there is always something to do. The activity director Manny does such an amazing job. He made it a point to meet everyone and he would remember your name. Every time he would see you he would say hello and chat with you. Every day he had things planned so if you wanted to enjoy something fun Manny had something for you to do. The group i was with did his tequila tasting, salsa dancing lessons, water aerobics, bar tending class, and fiesta and they were outstanding. By far the high light of our trip was Manny's classes and he made our stay there that much more enjoyable.

Room Tip: All the rooms have an ocean view!
