Writing this from our 2 bdroom condo that is part of the resort behind the main hotel at Misiones de Cabo. If you want to have quiet....you'll get it here. There are NO ammenities (the 2 people i have seen at their reservation counter say the store and restaruant are closed because of the economy . . . . . according to other reviews, its been that way for awhile now!) But the gorunds/pools are well taken care of, etc.
You NEED a car if you stay here. I like not being in the heart of the town, but dirving here is an adventure for certain, even though its very close. A one-way highway of sorts links all and has "service road" access to get on and off or change directions. A challenge for the weak-hearted as the access to the service road is normally as large as 2 car lengths and entering and exiting use the same "access"!! If you happen to miss where you need to exit (which is very easy as everyone drives fast)...it can be a challenge turning around. There is lots of construciton on the main hwy at the momnet, which takes you away from where you are attempting to go at times. We are just starting to get things wired now....about 4 days into our trip.
There is a costco and walmart just down the street to stock up on food/supplies which makes things very easy and you can use your charge card. Merchants exchange rates vary here as we've seen everywhere from 13 to 15.5 US dollar to paseos.
The condo is upscale and well furnished with a balcony that over looks the condo pool and the Sea of Cortez (morinng sun). We'd perfer sunset views, but it is all beautiful. Rent a high corner unit if possible to try to get views both ways (ASK!). The pools are nice and the hotel pool has a beautiful sunset and Arches view. The bar in (yes in) the hotel pool is closed, but the condo one is open.
Word of advice...stick with the very well known car rental agencies to book a car. We booked with Europcar and the agents here refused to honor our price we booked and had a reservation for online (had to spend time calling the ofice in the UK to try to resolve this afger the fact).
The local economy is well supported by the resorts, incluing time shares. Everywhere you will be promiced all kinds of goodies to go hear the pitch. . . including at the airport and car rental booths, etc. The local resorts offers $600US to anyone in town to get you to the time share pitch, which, if you attend, they pay out as a commision at 6pm! The locals will "bribe you" (their words, not mine) with dinner and boating ceritifiacates, cash and liquor (which comes off the ttop of their $600) If you go, keep what the local promiced you in writing to ensure you get what you earned! To be fair, we went to hear the pitch...so we know!
The beaches at Missiones are unswimable as the rocks have small barnacles that are as sharp as glass adn you dont realize yoru getting cut by until you leave the water! If you want to snokel and play in the tide pools, bring some water shoes for protection. There are several nice beachs (Santa Maria de Playa) close by though - again...you'll need a car.
The view from the mona lisa restaraunt just next door is the best ive see in any of my travels...at lands end where the sea of Cortez and the Pacific come together, with the gorgoues rock formation called the Arches gseems to guide the passage between the two waterways. The weather has been PERFECT. In the 80's, but dry and feels comfortable. Id get air conditioning in any unit though as sometimes it becomes very still in the evening...but during the day, great ocean breezes abound!
We havent spent much time in town yet, but most every one seems to speak English and its very easy to communicate. Everyone seems very freindly and welcoming.
Id definately come back to Cabo.....but may look for a better swimmable beach access location as love ocean swimming.
