We had won a 3 night stay at Me Cabo thru KGO radio contest and after reading most of the reviews at TripAdvisor chose to stay Sunday October 26th and leaving the following Wednesday. We are in our 50’s and did not want to have to compete with the somewhat younger crowds that apparently show up over the weekend. We initially were booked in a ‘garden view’ room but were able to upgrade on-line to an ‘ocean view’ room with the help of Daniela Lopez from the guest service department for a flat $40.00 (USD) per night, per room. Upon arriving noticed a posting with standard rack room prices at $406.00 for a garden view and $456.00 for an ocean view room, (plus 23% taxes) so the upgrading prices we were quoted were OK, however I printed out the email confirmation showing the prices expecting the worse at check out – and I’m glad I did! Our feeling was the base price of the room with tax included at $560.00 per night was high for the size and quality of the room. If it would have been an all inclusive including meals and drinks then it might have been worth it. It appears the garden view rooms were on the first and second floor and the ocean views on the third and above all having balconies that overlooked the pool/garden area and most with an ocean view if you were high enough. We were in room #311 and had an ocean view. The food and drinks we had were nothing to get excited about. For breakfast the buffet served at “the Deck” was priced at $18.00 pp. We had lunch once at “Nikki Beach” splitting a sandwich that was just OK for about $15.00. There was nothing on the menu that looked that good. The drinks were average if that ranging from $4.00 to $8.00 for exactly the same drink perhaps depending on who was bartending. If you paid in US dollars they would give you change in Pesos. We had chosen not to bill anything to the room to avoid overcharging and make the checking our process as smooth as possible – and I’m glad we did. We did not go the probably highly overrated Passion Club but did hear the music on Sunday night but with the air conditioner on it did muffle the music as others had written about. The air conditioning was a little strange, something between a swamp cooler and the standard A/C that we were used to. The thermostat did absolutely nothing, so the thing was either on or off but did offer a3 speed fan setting. The outdoor music wasn’t that loud and didn’t start until the afternoon. The pools and surrounding beds/chairs were fine; we never ran into ‘reserved’ problems but didn’t care much for the hotel’s policy on handling the cruise ship patrons. The cruise ships apparently come in every day except for Sunday with some of the people from the ships deciding to spend the day on Me Cabo grounds using the pools etc. for a per day fee. This was irritating as were suddenly joined at the poolside by about a dozen people who were very loud and looked like they all had just gotten off the Weight Watcher cruise. The only good thing was they had to leave before 5:00 PM or miss the boat.
The overall age group we saw probably between 20 and 30’s but we did see several children with parents and a few other ‘older’ couples. Very few singles, no ‘Ken and Barbie’s’ but a few that thought they were. A short walk down the beach we found The Deck, The Mango Deck and the Sandbar with most serving breakfast, lunch and dinner all in an outdoor setting. This area is referred to as the Playa Medano ("Medano Beach"). There is also Billigans there, but the margaritas were so bad I didn’t want to give them credit for anything. We found a very nice dinner spot just a few walking blocks from Me Cabo – Edith’s, this ran us $140.00 for dinner for 2 but worth every penny. We went on the Tropicat Wine & Jazz cruise which was fun costing about $45.00 pp. To get to pier #4 where the cruise docks at costs about $10.00 by taxi from the hotel but only $3.00 pp back using a water taxi. If we go back to Cabo we won’t be staying at Me Cabo, nothing was really wrong with it, it just wasn’t for us. Not having to pay we can’t complain much. When we went to check out there were two other couples ahead of us, both finding charges they were disputing on the final bill. On our bill there was one charge only referred to as “Upselling” priced at 2,036.88 pesos. I asked how much the pesos were in US dollars and was told $350.00! Well that’s a $200.00 rip off. After I showed the email quoting the $40.00 per night upgrade/upselling they finally said that they had accidentally punched in a incorrect peso to dollar value and that I was correct, the final bill ending at $147.60 US dollar and thru American Express after the out of Country fees totaling $159.39. Accidentally – right. Note: If you’re reading this Mr. Ernesto Luna, Managing Director ME by Meliá Cabo, please don’t bother sending your form letter. All the readers get it! Apparently you don’t.
